Former Diablo Developers Jay Wilson and Julian Love Announce the Formation of Gas Giant Games

Two former Blizzard Entertainment developers have
announced the formation of Gas Giant Games
, a new studio founded by Diablo III Game Director Jay Wilson and Lead Technical Artist Julian Love. Joined by a team of experienced gaming industry alumni including World of Warcraft, Overwatch, Gears of War, Dawn of War, Dying Light, Cyberpunk 2077, and Company of Heroes developers, Gas Giant Games will also be headed by former THQ Senior Vice President and Walt Disney Company Director Dan Kelly.

“Julian and I have together, and separately, delivered some of the best action, RPG, and strategy systems the game industry has ever seen. I felt we could create new, outstanding game experiences if we teamed up, gathered the best developers we know, and applied those skills to games and game genres that we’re passionate about.”
Julian, the company’s Creative Director, added, “Gas Giant Games starts with a core understanding of what players value in the games we make. Then we focus on delivering the s—t out of that.”
Their team has spent the past two years working on several game concepts to find the one they wanted to build, deciding on a currently unnamed brand new IP action RPG featuring survival elements, which will be previewed to publishers and investors at next week's

“Each of our concepts had to pass the test of showing that it would not only be a good experience to build, but a great game to

We all agreed we had found the game we had to make: an action RPG with survival elements that we think players of both genres will love.” Julian continued, “A development team’s time is a precious thing and there’s no justification for spending their time on anything other than games they want to make. And man, do we want to make this game.” Based on a new IP developed by Gas Giant Games, the game is being developed for PC and consoles, with mobile platforms to be evaluated.
Diablo fans may remember
as the somewhat controversial lead designer and later Game Director of Diablo III, initially responsible for the game's physics engine and combat design. Citing burnout after a decade of working on the game, Wilson left the Diablo team in 2013, moving to assist with the development of other Blizzard Entertainment projects including Titan (which would become Overwatch) and World of Warcraft: Legion, before leaving the company entirely in 2016 to pursue a career in writing. He now serves as Design Director at Gas Giant Games.
served as the Lead Technical Artist for Diablo III, responsible for custom art tools and character rigging, before taking on the role of Lead FX artist for the entire Diablo team. He later served as a Senior Combat Designer for both Diablo Immortal and Diablo IV, working classes, combat feel, and visual communication and combat VFX direction before leaving Blizzard Entertainment in 2021. He has now taken on the role of Creative Director at Gas Giant Games.

“While we’re not ready to reveal the full details of our in-progress project to the whole world just yet, we can say that fans of our past games will be stoked about what’s to come,” said Jay. “I can tell you this: our game will deliver insane, visceral combat, engaging progression systems, and a unique survival experience—all wrapped into a new and original world that we’re sure you’ll love to explore.”
