Chromie's backstory is explored in
Folk and Fairy Tales of Azeroth
, detailing why she chose a female gnome as her mortal form.
World of Warcraft: Folks & Fairy Tales
will be officially released on May 25th, but some players are starting to receive it early. You can pre-order the book on Amazon at the link below!
World of Warcraft: Folk & Fairy Tales of Azeroth
Chromie, a member of the Bronze Dragonflight, appears all over
World of Warcraft
from Timewalking Leveling Campaigns to her own scenario,
The Deaths of Chromie
. She also played a large role in the WoW Classic Announcement trailer!
While most players call this friendly dragon by her nickname Chromie, her true name is Chronormu, which follows the naming convention for male dragons. This has led players to speculate that Chromie could be transgender. In the short story "The Visage," that is strongly implied to be the case as we see Chromie chose the mortal form of a female gnome in a coming-of-age ceremony. Some players have received the book early, and
Portergauge shared the following excerpt
on Twitter:
The blue dragon nodded. "I believe I understand why you chose to take the form of a gnome. But if I may ask, why did you choose to become female as well?"
Chrome smiled. "It suits me," she said, and shared with Kalec a long, happy hug.
And with that, a glorious day unfolded into a glorious evening.
A
reddit thread on Warcraftlore
provided additional context, describing earlier parts of the story setting up the importance of choosing mortal forms, including a conversation between ZIdormi and Chromie. Leading up to the ceremony, Chromie is given he/him pronouns, but after choosing the form of a female gnome, uses she/her pronouns. There is a clear effort to start the story with one pronoun and end with another, signifying change.
It is unclear from the story how Chromie presents in dragon form or the motivations behind keeping the name Chronormu. However, one of her quotes in
Heroes of the Storm
suggests the naming conventions may be more fluid than we assumed:
Everyone calls me Chromie, but my real name is Chronormu. Huh? <scoff> No, it is not a male name. You clearly don't understand the intricacies of dragon culture.
