This quest seems to be bugged, or I was EXTREMELY LUCKY after being suspicious that the quest was bugged and attempted to restart the quest from the beginning after hours of farming.

My first attempt to complete this quest, I ran straight for the Magical Stone at 63.4 68.8 in Winterspring. I killed the stone and looted then spawned Outcast Cryomancer, which I killed and looted Depleted Essence of Frost. I then proceeded to kill giants over and over and over for hours. I farmed with various mages for the item and none of us saw it drop. I farmed with other players that were just farming Eko's because why not. It still never dropped. Then I read somewhere that it may be bugged in a message that Sifhyr made on Scroll: Essence of Frost's wowhead comments; Scroll: Essence of Frost

I was in a group with 1 other mage and 3 other players farming ekos at the time. I suggested that I drop the quest and go pick it up again and start over and that the other mage keep his quest so we can test if it's bugged. We did that, and we had no luck after 21 minutes of farming and killing 8 Frostmaul Giant and 6 Frostmaul Preserver. I used Farmlog to track my kills because I was getting annoyed. The other mage ended up calling it quits.

So then I kept killing with the other 3 players. I randomly looked in my inventory and I was like whoa, I still had the Depleted Essence of Frost in my inventory from killing Outcast Cryomancer. This was clearly a mistake since I dropped the quest and did not fulfill the requirements to solve the frost puzzle intentionally.

So I dropped the quest again. Then I deleted Depleted Essence of Frost. I actually logged out of the game for good measure. This part can probably be skipped but who knows, smol indie company. I logged back in and accepted the quest. Luckily one of my team members was a warlock and they summoned me back. We located a nearby Frostmaul Giant and while killing it, I jokingly typed in party chat, "k first kill it drops" and then I actually loot Scroll: Essence of Frost.

After killing 50+ Frost Giants and restarting the quest multiple times I realised I still had the Depleted Essence of Frost quest item from destroying the frost puzzle in my inventory.

Dropping the quest does not remove the quest item! DELETE THIS ITEM BEFORE STARTING AGAIN!

I got the scroll to drop after the 4th Frost Giant kill, also avoided going near the frost puzzle to trigger the next part of the quest. Once I got the scroll I approached the frost puzzle area and was able to solve it and kill the Geomancer guy.

like others have said, delete depleted if you got it first and abandon the quest.

scroll just does not have the best drop chance. 16 giants on multiple contested layers later..

This quest still being bugged for months is why I'm glad Blizzard had mass layoffs and I hope another round happens if they can't get their !@#$ together.

I feel bad looking at the past comments. Dropped after felling 5 ice giants and the first scroll I deciphered was the correct one. Maybe it got fixed...?

April 2025, still bugged. You must kill the giants to get the scroll BEFORE doing any other part of the quest, or it bugs out and the giants won't drop the scroll.

Dropping quest, re-logging and then picking it up again can also help de-bug it if it bugs out.

My first try I went right to the stone, melted it and then killed the cryomancer, and proceeded to spend nearly 2 hours killing giants without a drop. Dropped the quest, deleted the essence from my inventory, grabbed quest again and went to giants first...dropped in 5 kills.
