Garar is right, the best basic technique is to start with Healing over Time spells, rejuv and lifebloom. If you tank's HP is still slipping, cast regrowth. If it's still slipping, start casting Healing Touch, then refresh all the HoTs. 5-man healing is really not too complicated, just keep ppl's health topped up and you should avoid most "accidents".
As for resto builds, if you are just PvE healing all the time, you can pretty much put all your talents into resto. If you are PvPing then you need points elsewhere.
for pure PvE healing power you can go all resto:

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=0zjMzZZEEI0cq0xstthere are many other things you can do for PvP, it depends on your gear and playstyle. To be really excellent in PvP requires even more points in the other trees (you can go down into feral for good survivability) and probably leaving out tree of life, but this will reduce you ability to heal well in PvE.
for +healing, with blue instance gear aim for +1000, if you can get your hands on epics aim for +1500.
For stamina, 6-7k unbuffed for PvE, 8-10k for PvP. I know some healers go along with less, but they're the ones that die all time. Whenever balancing your stats, never forget the importance of stamina. It increases your ability to heal, because you can't heal when you are dead :-)
Mana - 8-10k ish.
For regen, get as much mp5 as you can, especially if you find yourself going oom a lot. Spirit is good for restos becuase the added +healing bonus from spirit, but for pure regen mp5 is king for all healing classes.
my advice is to get the Healbot addon. I know some ppl don't like it, but it does have a few great advantages to healing by any other methods:
1) you can assign all your heals and decursing to be activated on clicking, left-clicking, shift clicking, alt-clicking etc etc on the target. Saves a lot of fumbling around with keys. It also lets you heal players without having to target them. Great in PvE and PvP.
2) you can select an option for it to downrank your heals as necessary. Say goodbye to overhealing. (ps - don't do this in raids or PvP. too dangerous)
3) It has a range check built in. If you ever find yourself in a spread out fight or in a raid it is a godsend. In BGs the range check is overpowered in the extreme. Simply an awesome feature.
