So many strikes against Activision and not enough good content to keep me loyal. Blizz went from my favorite company to one I would convince even a stranger not to join.
This is dumb. At this point they're just looking for a reason to strike. Your contract ended and they decided not to renew. Theres no injustice here.
> the situation has highlighted the exploitative nature of temporary contract workMuch the same way that ordering a burger at McDonalds and not receiving a prime steak highlights the "exploitative" nature of eating fast food.
Activision Blizzard admits to canning 20 temp workers while they also hired 500 other workers full time. This just highlights how ABK is a badly organized movement that cannot seem to choose what battle are good to fight. Activision Blizzard, hired full time 97% of that 520 temp staff. I think that is a pretty darn good number all things considered.
Way too many people in the comments mixing up illegal and immoral. Them being fired after years of service, just before Christmas, and after being made to relocate, while the game generates billions in revenue and the CEO and execs receive massive bonuses was perfectly legal. But it was immoral to the extreme.
There is an implied risk with term contacts. If you don't like the risk, don't accept it. It sucks, but its life.
Oh man, I'd be so happy for my friends still in QA if they unionized.
I think most people lose track of the key issue. The problem isn't with the 12 who didn't get a permanent contract, the problem is with the "temporary" contracts. Most people hear this being used so very often, it has become commonground and the true meaning has been forgotten.Definitions of "temporary" from Merriam-Webster dictionary:adjective : lasting for a limited timenoun : one serving for a limited timeDefinitions of "temporary" from Cambridge dictionary:adjective (UK) : not lasting or needed for very longadjective (US) : not lasting or permanentThe issue is clearly the very loose interpretation of what "temporary" actually means, and how it is used. It is abused to get a cheap labor force, whom beside getting less basic pay, also do not accrue seniority or gain periodical raises, nor do they have the chance to get promoted. To make a comparison, in Belgium, you can only have a temp worker under a strict set of parameters, and for a set period of time (no more than 1 year per contract), after which they must be either hired permanently or let go. Temp workers need to be payed equal to their non-temp coworkers doing the same work (except the seniority pay), have the same amount of sickleave days, holidays and vacation time off. They also get to accrue seniority in the same way as non-temp workers do, so the system does not get abused by giving out a large number of short-term contracts to keep the pay as low as possible.TLDR: Temporary means a short / limited time, it is not a magic word to justify exploitation of employees.
Spent years working as a contractor wondering if I'd get picked up year to year. I finally got tired of it and made a move. This sucks, but I feel if you sign up for this kind of work, sometimes you get what you sign up for? Hope they all find better employment quickly.
Clearly people don’t understand what the words TEMPORARY EMPLOYMENT means. Your position can be terminated whenever the employer wants. SMH..
