Global Maintenance on October 6th - Players Likely Unable to Log-In

Posted 2021/10/05 at 6:28 PM by Squishei

As many players noticed, there’s an extra maintenance time scheduled for 22:00-23:00 CEST tonight, 6 October. This maintenance is for a global infrastructure upgrade, so we need to carry it out at the same time for all of our services around the world. We chose this time for having the least global impact, but recognize that it is not ideal for European players, especially those in Western time zones. We’re hopeful that the actual maintenance will be completed in a matter of 15-30 minutes, and while players will likely be unable to log-in during this maintenance, we won’t need to shut down realms. Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee the stability of the game service during this timeframe.Thank you.

Realms will not go online ?

Yea, they mistyped. The bluepost says the opposite..

Didn't the announcement say that the game will be unavailable during the mentioned time?
"we won’t need to shut down realms. Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee the stability of the game service during this timeframe." sounds different tho. I assume many people have re-scheduled their stuff anyway by now, so won't really matter.

To me, this means that if you're already logged in during the estimated 15-30 min "downtime" you won't get booted off, but at the same time, you won't be able to log in if you missed the window. However...

Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee the stability of the game service during this timeframe.

...players already logged in during the global maintenance may experience lag or get booted off due to server instability.

TLDR: The moral of this story is to log in BEFORE the global maintenance (1 pm PST tomorrow on 10/6) starts, but don't be surprised if the world server goes down during that 15-30 min window.

Why cant Blizzard have an prober week like everyone else starting at monday and do their bloody maintenance on sunday night every week so servers are ready for an new week instead of killing all the fun putting it in on weddensday every bloody time.

Who’s Sunday night do they choose? No matter when they choose to do it people will be upset

Comment by PriestessAur

There are more people playing on Sunday nights than Wednesday afternoons. That would actually be a worse choice.

If you paid attention to anything you would realize companies tend to release software/firmware for the public during the week so they have staff on hand to fix it. Aka patch Tuesday from Microsoft being the key example of this for a bit even before their formal adoption of the terms almost 2 decades ago.

Employees need, should and want their weekends off (so it lines up with most of the family and world wanting to do events as well). Sorry if an extended reset time, ruins w/e precious activity you wanted to do in this game.

If you are logged in before maintenance, you might be able to continue playing.

Not sure why exactly it's necessary to do maintenance during peak times (EU). Their answer is probably "Why not?" lol

Comment by Amatyr

Pushing it one hour later would have made all the difference for EU realms, but nothing for their global concerns.

If I had to guess its probably because europeans are chillAF and americans would go absolutely ballistic if it happened during their peak time

Comment by NierielNora

Based on time difference of their technical headquarter and the fact that it only affects login/authentication, it's actually a good time. Later then you have US peak, earlier then you have EU peak. And they also need to prepare for it. It won't be many that "newly" login at this late hour in EU. And it won't be many that want to login in the early evening in the US.

Doing maintenance on a Sunday is the worst idea ever. Actually, it's only beaten by a Friday software release in the afternoon, and then everyone heads off for the weekend, while the public tries the new piece of software when they also have their weekend. A recipe for disaster as you have no people during the weekend. You work weekends? Without extra compensation? And alone? So when stuff hits the fan you are in charge and doing all yourself? And then after the incident spend all night to make a report for your boss who wants to have a full analysis on Monday before 9 am? You do that once, you do that twice, after that Friday releases are gone.

You prepare for a release/update on Monday... release part 1 on Tuesday and monitor, release part 2 on Wednesday and have the rest of the week for analysis and preparation for the next update. Because then your whole staff is at the ready. Most companies with professional development release on Tuesdays.

I'm sure the dozens of players still playing will be very upset

TIL the least populated timezone in the world is GMT +10.5, which is only occupied by the Lord Howe Islands, a small chain of islands about 400 miles NE of Sydney, Australia with only about 350 people who live on it.

Okay, fair, but why did this not come out preemptively? They shoot themselves in the foot with lack of communication almost without fail at every opportunity.

Do you mean like having it on the launcher since Saturday, four days before the maintenance?...
