You can find Volcor sitting in a cave called "Blackwood Den", which is south of the Grove of the Ancients along the mountian ridge (44,85). When you speak with him, you have a choice of how to escape the cave - escape by force, or by steath.

If you're a rogue or similar character that can stealth, then the stealth method would be your best bet. As a hunter that option wasn't available to me, so I chose to "escape by force".

Luckily, I had cleared out all the surrounding mobs before going in, so there weren't a ton of bad guys to kill. Even with the path clear, approximately 5 owlkins (or whatever they are) appeared anyway and attacked us. Volcor may walk slow, but he does fight along side you, so we were able to dispatch everyone. At most we had two monsters on us at one time.

Once you get to the road, the escort quest is done and you can turn it in back at Auberdine.

From Grimclaw, head up to the edge of the mountains, skirting around the Blackwood mobs. The cave is slightly back to the north. You may have to pull/kill 1 or 2 to skirt into the cave.

Talk to Volcor, and CHOOSE ESCAPE BY STEALTH! He will put on the cloak, & disappear. You can just run back out the same way, or - even easier - use your hearthstone, if it is attuned to Auberdine inn.

If you choose to fight - like I did the first time - be aware that Volcor will walk RIGHT INTO/THROUGH THE CAMP. He's wounded already, so heal/buff him if at all possible. The fight will get you some exp & drops, so that isn't so bad.

Just another example of how, sometimes, you should follow the directions of the quest giver, and, sometimes, you shouldn�t. I have now died two times on this quest, and, of course, the game being the ungodly b*tch that it is, I have each time been resurrected at the far end of the area.

If you do not want to chose "Stealth" kill everything on your way in, do NOT bother using the cloak to sneak in. You simply cannot hope to protect your charge against that many mobs unless you are a high level mage with effective AoE spells.

With that in mind, it might be a good idea to use the cloak for some other quest, where stealth might be useful, before completing this quest

Just loved this quest so much I had to do it with my 19 Hunter. Cleared three or four bad guys with no trouble but then I ran into a problem. It seems that the Shamans can heal themselves, or at least the one to the left of the cave entrance. Needless to say, hunters cannot, so I got to make two grave runs this time. Actually it wasn't that far, just two plane changes but I think one of them was in Pittsburgh.

The second time I sent my faithful pet into the scrimmage and ran into the cave. One hairy guy followed and we whacked at each other for awhile. Then two more came, followed by three more, followed by a brass band, the Pittsburgh Steelers team and the entire population of Tucson. It seems to me that once you achieve your objective - getting into the cave - the bad guys have lost. Killing the player at that point is just mean. Maybe the Spirit Healer in the North graveyard is lonely?

I thought I buggered up the quest when a mod (AutoInnerFire) triggered right after I used the charge on the cloak - casting Inner Fire put me back into caster form. However, I approached the cave from the right side, killed the Furbolg there, then pulled the two at the entrance (one by one) and walked into the cave without aggroing anything else.

Easy XP as a lvl 18 priest.

I read the previous post of clearing the way in case of the 'force' quest. Well, did that and encountered only the respawns...4 or 5, no more than 2 at a time...quite easy (used a minor mana pot though)...hunter 19

Location 44, 85 is the cave that volcor is in.

I had to clear 5 mobs, was able to pull them one at a time. The warrior mobs are easy, the shaman mob (had to kill only 1) heal themselves...a bit more hassle.

Then, walk into cave, talk to Volcor. I selected "stealth" out...he takes cloak and makes his own way out...and I just walk out back to town.

Solo with 21 Drood :)

Have any enchanters tried to get this quest, disenchant the cloak and abandon, reget? Seems like it would be a good source of free, infinite enchanting ingredients.

set your stone to Auberdine.
/wave at the white bear by the road
It points toward the cave - you can SEE it if you stand by him and don't have your video settings nerfed.

Equip cloak.
left click and drag the cloak to your button bar.
When you get close enough to the cave to see the guards, hit the cloak button.
It turns you to a cat.
You are stealthed (it doesn't really look like it) so you can run right past them and get into the cave.

Talk to the guy. You finish the quest. Take his next quest, choose escape by stealth.
He takes the cloak, uses it, and runs out.
You stone back to Aub.

Done, absolutely zero risk.

I completed it rather easily at 16 (druid). The hardest and most annoying part is getting the 5 pelts from the Sires (easy) or Matriarchs (harder). I got 750 XP, so all that time hunting cats was rather... well, I'm disappointed. The reward was worse than what I was wearing.

When you're approaching the cave via clearing out the furbolgs, take care to get the one to your right (the cave's left), he is hiding behind a hill and in some bushes.

Anyway, easy finish for an annoying quest, but one down.

Not sure why anyone is having any kind of trouble.

1. Head south right past Wildbend River. You'll see a bear named Grimclaw on your left. Wave at him. He points to he cave which is very close.

2. Wear the cloak. Approach the cave out of distance from any furbolgs. Use the charge on the cloak and just walk in and talk to Vilcor.

3. Choose stealth and stealth out, or just run straight out until they stop chasing you.

4. Head back to Auberdine, or Hearthstone from the cave.

So simple I hope this helps ppl make it just as simple for them.

Found Grimclaw. /wave -ed at him. He looked directly at the cave mouth. I took a slightly southerly course between the two blackwood camps, but had to take out one blackwood as I made it to the edge of the mountains just south of the cave entrance. Had to pull two blackwood warriors, but they don't persue very far, so if you have to run for it, they give up easily. Killed one. Went into the mouth of the cave, the other followed me in. Killed that one. Spoke to NPC (Vorac? Can't remember name). Chose Stealth. When the "!" appeared over his head, spoke to him again. He put on the cloak, turned into a moonstalker, and ran through the camp untouched. I walked out of the cave, made an immediate left turn along the mountain ridge, and went back to the road the way I came. No problems. You can also moonstone out of the cave, but if you get out before those two blackwoods respawn, there's no need to.

Don't know what people are saying about them wearing the cloak. . .it's for the NPC you're trying to rescue.

Yes you can keep the cloak. Throw away the cloak and abandon the quest and you will get a new one in Auberdine.

No, you cannot use it outside of Darkshore. That would be to great really, invisibility for all classes while being able to move. I tried perception (human racial ability) on Volcor and couldn't find him.

Raene's Cleansing in Ashenvale has the best quest reward I know however. That rod works everywhere!

And the guy you are supposed to meet with is a white bear along the road :-) Funny guy that druid.. Didn't say much either.

I enjoy and trust your comments on all the quests. If I were to follow half of the others that leave them id quit the game. they make them so hard. It is a p,easure to see yours because I know I am going to be able to complete it without long delays and incorrect advice. Thanks done in less than 10 mins (and that was traveling time). didnt shed a ounce of damage.

The hardest part about this quest was getting the pelts. I could only find about 4 or 5 sires or matriarchs in all of southern Darkshore and the droprate was app. 1:4. Probably the most aggravating quest i've done yet.

went to grimclaw../wave..he showed me in what direction to go..cleared the left side of the usas went behind the on log tent..snuck in..turned in quest and accepted stealth on the second part of quest..i did this at lvl 18 druid..i attacked in bear form..when they ran i went to human form quickly and hit my target with moonfire once or twice..what ever it took to keep them from running into camp and aggro the others..maybe this will work for you too if you are druid..try it if you want

I did this quest at lvl 24 night elf rogue. I switched continents and hadn't finished this one, but finally came back and did it. It was totally simple, I didn't even bother with Grimclaw because waving at him didnt seem to work. I didn't use any kind of stealth for this quest at all. I just ran up by the cave, killed most of the Furbolg camps next to it (only the two in the way, not all those other ones further south), walked in and started the quest and chose "By Force", and when we walked to Grimclaw I had to kill about ten more Furbolgs that came out of nowhere but it was easy and took less than five minutes.

When I turned the quest in at Auberdine I still got 1750 xp (and the belt which was still a minor upgrade for me), not bad for such a simple quest at lvl 24.

to avoid dying 15 times and having to run from the NORTHERNMOST graveyard to the cave in the SOUTHERNMOST part of Darkshore, just run past all the baddies-yes they chase you, no it doesnt matter-to the back of the cave. you will die here and all the baddies leave the cave. run back to your body and rez at the back of the cave. give the guy the cloak and have him stealth out. as soon as it says quest complete across your screen, hearthstone back to auberdine! easy as apple pie.

I compleated this as a lvl 19 hunter with a lvl 18 fully trained cat. First I fought my way in, this cleared most of the mobs for later, I talked to the guy and choose to fight the way out, we had a run in just at the mouth of the cave, then just after the fallen logs then about halfway down to the road, each one was with 2 mobs, I ran into more going down because I didn't clear the path compleatly of all the mobs. It was fairly easy with my cat, the guy and me all fighting, and I suspect a group of two or three people around 18-20 could easily do this rought. Reward is a leather belt, some silver and about 1700 in xp, this path was orange for me at lvl 19.

I did this quest with my druid and when I used the cape instead of stealthing, it changed the enviroment around me, something like the effect you get when you're in ghost form. There were no mobs outside at all, and once in the cave I had to right click on the buff to go back to normal! Last time I tried it, it only gave you stealth, like the druid's cat form. When did they change this?

well with the mages new invis all items giving invis changed the engin one aswell turns the enviroment into a ghost type of land and you can only see other stealth or invis units so this cape alot with the gnome invis from engineering is nerfed alot its still nice but you will not be able to see mobs

You need to first complete the quest where you get the pelts for the cloak. NPC then makes the cloak and assigns another quest to find the master. When getting THIS quest, is when you are given the cloak to take to the master of the bear.

Was totally bugged when we did this. My wife and I (19 rogue and 19 druid) too the "by force" quest. The first time, he was fighting mobs that were 20 meters away. I'd go up to them, and get a message "Too far away". I'd go back to where he was, same message. my wife died, then, even though I'm standing next to him, I get a "failed" message. next thing I know I'm being attacked, but there are no mobs near by. I die.
Take 2. He just runs. Doesn't stop for anything. The mobs completely ignore him, and go for my wife and I. We die. Ended up having to take the crappy reward for the stealth quest.
Same thing happened on the absent minded professor quest. Server crashed today. Coincidence?

GM has replied to the Quest bug I addressed, and the GM suggest waiting 30mins before repeating the Quest to avoid this bug.

so... I was a idiot and activated the cloak, then decided to dismiss my pet... which changed me back.... DOH!

is there any way I can get the charge back on the cloak, or am I gonna have to abandon the quest and start over?

I did the Escape through Force solo at level 20 (Hunter). I failed the 1st time, but the key is to let at least one of the waves, there are 3 waves of 2, hit Volcor so he stops to fight. If he doesnt get aggro he will keep walking and spawning the other waves. So stay a bit behind him and let him get aggro 1st, then send your pet off to the extra add, or send your pet to help him(with growl on) and you take on the add. Wasnt too bad, in the beginning I had to mend pet once and near the end I was pretty low on mana, but we won =).

Tried Force a few times, but he either ignored mobs even though I stayed *way* behind him or mobs would "evade" my attacks and still do damage. Either way, I had no chance.

stealth... great. cloth pants. just what my rogue needs.

I had a better cloak when I did this so I just let him stealth out and I used my hearthstone.

lvl 19 warlock, and made it this way

i went in wearing the cape, but they attacked my voidwalker

as i talked to volcor, my voidwalker was almost dead, so i used sacrifice to get a good armor.

after that i gave voldor the cloak, and i ran
back on the road i was free and the quest completed :)

I finished this quest as a lvl 20 Hunter. I didn't even need to use the cloak's invis. I just fought my way in, talked with Volcor, and "fought" my way out. Since I had killed everything on the way in, walking out was a straightforward procedure.

In order to fight my way in though, I sent my pet in to attack mobs one at a time, and picked them off with my bow. On two occasions, my pet pulled two mobs, but they were easily dealt with. Just make sure that you have full mana when you fight the mobs just in case. Overall, this was an easy quest to finish at lvl 20.

basicly.....i massacred them all with my lvl 22 lock..and pet...was'nt to hard...just go south of auberdine till you see the white bear. wave at the bear and he points to where you need to go...then if you want. just take a couple of the mod's out...and sneak in. give the cloak to the man and let him sneak out. and just pick off who's left on the outside.

just stealth in with the cloak, talk to him and say escape by stealth and then your done, no fighting involved and you yourself dont have to sneak out. Its the simplest way. I was a 19 warrior

my stealthing reward for the rescue was a pair of Scarab Trousers, (soulbound). Legs Cloth, 29 armor, +4 Stamina, +4 Spirt, Durability 45/45

Follow the road from Auberdine south, past Grove of the Ancients. You will find Grimclaw, a NPC bear on the left side. Wave to him and he'll point his nose in the direction where the cave is.

As a lvl 19 Rogue I stealthed in, gave Volcor the cloak, chosed the stealthing option, and then I stealthed out: finished in 1 min!

After you walk into the cave cloaked, you have to take it off to see anything. Once you do you are alone with Volcor. He gives you two choices in how to leave the cave with him: stealth or fight. Can't just run because he gets killed and you lose. The benefit of fighting is twice the silver and much better loot. I tried to fight my way out and the entire camp jumped us. No good. Tried to clear camp before by myself (17 Rogue) but they resisted my sap and I got mobbed. They are lev 20. I ended up getting help from a warrior. We cleared the camp and then I got Volcor who walks slowly toward the road. He aggroed every furbolg for a long range but the three of us easily took on two at a time.
XP 1750 (level 18), 14 silver, Steadfast Cinch (leather belt) 45, +4 str, +3 stam

Ok, so I put the cloak on. I don't notice myself change in anyway but see the timer running on the cloak.

So, I run to the cave entrance and begin talking to the guy. Meanwhile, we get attacked by the furblogs, I have no idea what he said as I just kept clicking the complete quest box.

He says fight to the death and we both die. I dont have a record of the quest failing in my quest log or in my add on quest tracker.

However, I dont think I recieved anything for completeing it!

Soloed at 21 warrior. Killed one by one and cleared the path to the cave, it was surprisingly small with only Master in it. Chose force path and walked out with him. He jumps on every mob in the vicinity, so watch him close. I was lucky not to get more than 2 at once and with his help we made out easy.

Can anyone help? I also failed the quest. I activated the cloak and then popped away from Grimclaw. I finally figured out where I was and headed towards the southeast as Grimclaw had indicated. The enchantment got canceled, however, when I ran through a campfire! The cloak is now gone from my inventory.

I can't seem to repeat the quest even by starting over by getting more Moonstalker pelts. Is this a one shot deal?

I did it as a lvl 18 priest, all by myself.
Used the moonstalker cloak to get in.I just ran trough the camp. I was followed by 3 mobs so i died when i just got to him and delivered my quest. I forgot to use my heal in my excitment.
Choose Stealth, he left and i also used my heartstone to get out.

Went in as level 17 priest. I walked close along the mountain wall from the north, and only aggroed one mob(level 19 Ursa) on my way in. Got him out by stealth, and walked out without attracting any more aggro.

Completed the quest this triggers using Force today without a problem with my Hunter. Reward is Steadfast Cinch think the trick may be to stay well back so Volcor gets the aggro first otherwise he just walks away if you get attacked and doesn't assist.

Found the cave OK. Gave the cloak to Volcor, then a couple other folks respawned in the cave as I was making my way out. Ripped our way through some baddies and all was good.

I went through this quest solo, got to Volcor and chose to get him out via force. I wasn't strong enough at the time and he died and I failed the mission. I accidentally abandoned the quest and can't seem to get it back. I've returned to Terenthis but all he does is talk about his concern for fell moss and it's effect, etc. No quest available. Is it a lost cause? Thanks.

best thing to do if you dont mind doing it twice is to find some1 on "need a group" about the same level as you and do it by force twice. doing it by force you get (off the top of my head) about 14s and some other gear. :D

If you’ve completed the Buzzbox quests, you’ll know where the last one is. Grimclaw is located just a little farther south of the last Buzzbox. If traveling south from Auberdine, Grimclaw is on your left. He’s a big white bear you can’t miss. The cave isn’t big and there are no enemies inside of it, so you don’t have to run far cloaked. Just cloak to get yourself through the guys outside. Like someone mentioned, you can’t see your character change, but you can see the timer on the cloak when you go to the character stats screen and view your armor. I chose the stealth mode simply because I didn’t want to worry about Volcor dying. If you’re high enough level and don’t need his help killing, then it’s probably the easiest option. He sprints off and you “meet him” in town. I was sad to find out that you don’t get to keep the cloak.

Completed the quest through the Force option. Failed in the first attempt when Volcor died while battling Ursas, suggest cleaning out the area first before accepting the Quest. The 2nd attempt when I accepted the Quest, Volcor remained sitting and still had the exclaimation mark over his head. After waiting a short while, I realise the Ursas were attacking something invisible, I suspected the environment is not showing that Volcor had indeed stood up and started walking. I carry on killing the Ursas and hope Volcor didn't die despite not able to see where he is in the game. Whenever the engaging Ursas are killed, wait a few moments and let the invisible Volcor aggro the Ursas and then engage them. After a few mins, you will receive the Completed Quest notification. I have addressed the bug to WoW, the bug could be attributed to accepting the Quest again within too short a period after he spawned. Hope this helps those having confusion about this Quest.

This quest took me all of 4mins to get to cave and release Volcor. I am a lvl 20 Rogue so stealthing was the easy part. The run to and from the cave takes the longest. Grimclaw is way south of Auberdine on the road just past The Grove of Ancients. I recommend stealth was looks easier than fighting your way out.

My level 20 night elf druid just completed this quest last night. Grimclaw is just south of the bridge, and when you emote wave, he nudges you southeast, and you can see the cave almost immediately. I cleared out the camp with a simple formula, starfire, entangle, more spells, and bear form for melee. A level 19 shaman gave me a real battle, but in the end I walked into the cave safely and presented the cloak to Volcor. I went with stealth after reading other posts and watched him morph into moonstalker and escape. Curious, I ventured just outside the cave, which completed the quest. Volcor got away using the cloak and I simply used my hearth stone.

We had the unfortunate experience of having a Horde player come and attack him at the bottom of the hill. Being newbies, my partner and myself thought it was the final wave of the quest, and were a bit disappointed that suddenly we had a level 24 character and his level 24 pet to fight! I died, and came back as PVP, so I figured it out!

We went back and tried again, and it worked out fine.

I failed this quest tonight (by force) silly druid, let him sneak and then harth out! ((duhh)). Anyhow, I saw mention of ppl doing it again, but how do you get to the master again if you lost the cape in the 1st attempt?

As a level 19 Rogue, I sneaked into the cave without violence and gave the guy the cloak. He gave me the choice to fight our way out or sneak out. I selected sneak. He transformed into a moonstalker. I had already stealthed, and something broke the stealth. I waited in the cave for my stealth to regen, then I sneaked out. I knew the reward was 6 silver and some cloth pants good for a priest were the reward, but I had hoped they would be higher level and somehow worth it. They are vendor fodder. The reward (pants) should either be suited to the class of the player or not binding.

I found the posts very confusing for this quest... I thought I had to use the cloak... But the guy you go to free can use it as well. So what I did was this:

Fought my way through to the cave.

Spoke to the guy.

Choose escape by stealth.

He takes the cloak.

He shifts into a tiger or something and runs off, you dont have to follow him or anything.

You just need to make your way back to the road and then hand in the quest in auberdine again :)

Very easy quest, solo'd as an 18 shaman (draeni)

In Classic World of Warcraft during Phase 1 there has been a bug where Volcor may be standing by the road next to Grimclaw. You cannot interact with him and cannot complete the quest.

This is how you fix this bug: You must aggro one of the bears near Volcor and drag them to him, do not attack them, Volcor will attack them and pull aggro from you. Volcor will defeat the bear 1v1 but with little health remaining. If you time it correctly, you can aggro another bear and drag it to him, which he will attack and eventually be killed by the bear.

Volcor will then properly respawn inside the cave and you can turn in the quest.

I just want to add, the cape isn't a "quest item" so you can vendor it D: don't be like me. And don't bother going to him to see if you can still turn the quest in, you can't.

Played WoW since 2004, solo 99% of the time. Got help from Wowhead comments many times, but never had much of value to add. However, for this quest, I think I can help: I got to the cave, equipped the cloak on myself to get past the baddies, gave the cloak to Volcor, chose "Escape by Stealth", used my Hearthstone to go to Auberdine, turned in the quest, and got my reward. Easy-peasy as an 18 Night Elf Druid, though it could have been done this way by a level 1. ;)

Grimclaw's Reunion with Volcor:

I wanted to see the reunion between such a loyal pet? druid? and it's master. Following this quest with Escape Through Stealth never let me see the reunion. On my last alt, I decided to do Escape Through Force. When Volcor and I made it back to the road where Grimclaw was waiting the following happened:

Volcor says: We made it, my friend. Remember to find Terenthis and let him know we're safe. Thank you again.

Grimclaw comes running to Volcor and the following happens:

Grimclaw roars in excitement as he rushes Volcor. When he reaches his master, Grimclaw licks his face.
Volcor says: I'm happy to see you too, Grim. It looks like not all strangers are to be feared after all, huh, Grim? Terenthis shall reward this adventurer well.

This must be a timed quest, but I see nothing about that. I accepted this quest months ago and quit playing for a while. I have the quest. It reads Complete. Grimclaw does his pointer-dog thing. I have no cloak. Abandoning to retry - maybe.

AND FIND OUT I'M WEARING THE DAMNED THING.
EDITED again. I HATE this quest. I chose FORCE and died before I could attack anything. New Lvl 17 hunter...ended up rezzing NORTH of Auberdine! There are no saving aspects for this quest. Died again and rezzed again NORTH OF AUBERDINE. Never mind about this %$#-ing quest. Not worth the frustration.

When you complete the quest “Escape Through Force” and they reunite:

Volcor says: We made it, my friend. Remember to find Terenthis and let him now we’re safe. Thank you again.
Grimclaw roars in excitement as he rushes Volcor. When he reaches his master, Grimclaw licks his face.
Volcor says: I’m happy to see you too, Grim! It looks like not all strangers are to be feared after all, huh, Grim? Terenthis shall reward this adventurer well.
