Looks like this quest item is designed for Horde use, but they let us Alliance people get a miniscule taste of its purpose.

To continue on this quest, go back to the inn and check on the ground around the inn. You'll find some hoofprints, and when you report back to captain vimes, he send someone off to do scout out the footprints... that's where I'm at right now. not sure if I need to wait on the guy to get back, or run myself over to the Inn again.

There is also a guards bage on one of the wood boards layin on the ground.. Like a support beam. It has been a chain of about 4 quests now and I gotta go beat someone down.. weee!

After Defeating the Deserters in the Tower, you return to Vimes again, completing the quest for 2850XP.

And then...looks like another dead end !

Maybe you have to search for reethe in the whole of duskwallow ? Or perhaps infiltrate the ogre base ?

I've no ides what (if anything) comes next

I found Reethe, and he certainly looks like he was setting things on fire recently (burnt tent, holding a burning stick, etc) but he won't talk. I tried searching the Inn for more clues and talking to the Captain again, but with no success.

I followed those quests with another character at level 35, and remember they were a perfectly uninterrupted chain. I did not notice anything unusual, thus I dont remember all steps now.

At present I try those same quests again, but with a new character at lvl 30. And, as many other players, Im stuck in successive dead-ends.

That is why Im sure that those quests are level related, some being given at lvl 30 and others not displayed under lvl 35.

Once you have found the prints and the shield, go back to the inn and look for the 3 wooden planks in the top left corner of the inn when comming up the stairs. There you will find a token on one of the planks.

After you have done Suspicious Hoofprints and The Black Shield, you can find this little item on the plank. Here is a pic.

you can pick up all three q�s at the same time... just find the hoof print, the shield and the badge at the same time and turn them in.... nice easy xp and you only need to go and talk to the blacksmith and do the deserters q afterwards.

im lvl 46 and happen to pass by and the shield highlighted, so i started this quest for the hell of it.

so get the shield, the hoofprint, and the badge laying at the shady rest in. return to the captain, talk to the blacksmith guy, go back to the captain. turn in the hoofprint, they send someone to "scout" that out. turn in the badge, talk to the guy in front of the captain, talk to the captain again, he tells you to go talk to the deserters which are at lost point (35:53) which is a decent ride from theramore. you need to kick Balos Jacken's ass (lvl 38 humanoid). dont worry the other guys dont jump in. HERES the problem, and i just reported it as i was doing this quest. Balos Jacken, after you defeat him, becomes a friendly target with a yellow ? over his head, the talk cursor comes up when your mouse is over him, you click to talk to him and make the gesture as you usually would to talk to anyone, but nothing happens. I just reported this problem and will follow up on it.

The same thing happened to me, I'm getting the yellow question mark but I cannot talk to him. I abandoned the quest and picked it up again so I'm gonna try that... Hopefully it gets fixed

i just did the quest where u kick balso butt.... IT NOT FIXED.... i reported it too an waited over 20 min for a gm.. then said the hell with it .... maybe when i get back on they will have fixed it

The quest is indeed bugged, talked about it with a gm and he responded that they are awere about the problem but coulndt say when they would fix it.

The quest continued for me. Balos Jacken told what happened to Reethe and then the quest sends you back to Vimes again. Vimes then sends one of his men to track Reethe. That's the last thing I've done and not sure what is next.

Where when completed the alliance send a troop to Reethe the horde travel to reethe themselves for a reward whithout one the other could not exist also It was a Tauren that burned the Inn down Caz Twosprocket says the shield belongs to a tauren and the mysterious HOOFPRINTS there ya go that narrows it down to hmmmmm there ya go

after returning to Vines once you've defeated the Deserter Captain and got him to tell you about Reethe. There is nothing else to do. You don't need to find reethe, as no one will ever ask you to. He's easy to find, esp. since his coords are in thottbot, but the alliance side of this chain ends at the end of the deserters chain. Just a bit of xp for a 1 fight quest chain basically. Something to do if you are going to be walking back and forth anyway.

I spoke to Vimes at Theramore Keep 68,48 and he suggested (white talk bubble inside the interaction window, at this stage it is not a quest, just a friendly talk) that I travel to the border of The Barrens and Dustwallow Marsh to look around the burnt remains of Shady Rest Inn.

29,48 - Dustwallow Marsh map is the fireplace in Shady Rest Inn, above which is the shield that gives the first quest.

The quest tells you to go to Theramore Isle and talk to Captain Garran Vimes (68,48 upstairs in the Keep). Vimes will tell you to show the shield to Caz Twosprocket at the Theramore blacksmith shop 64,50. Twosprocket sends you back to Vimes.

I got the quest for the hoofprints and the shield at the same time, so I don't think they're connected..

I examined the hoofprints, and went back to the captain. He sends out a scout to check it out. GO to Suspicious Hoofprints for the next step.

It just didn't seem right that the quest ended so abruptly, so I peeked at the horde side of the quest and got a few leads...

Go back to the inn and examine some hoofprints on the left side of the stairs near the tree. While you're there, go onto the main floor and look at the wooden planks, you'll find a tiny badge there on the plank that starts Lieutenant Paval Reethe.

I'm still in the middle of the chain, so more info to come.

Full Reethe Questline Info

It's a long story following Rethe's mystery on both alliance and horde side. I will tell the alliance side of things. I can also confirm it works in classic, you just need to get the required prequests. Questie will show the badge on the map, even if you didn't complete the prequests yet.

Alliance starts with James Hyal and the followup James Hyal OR They Call Him Smiling Jim (you can do only one of the prerequisites)

Once you got these prerequisites you will be able to loot the Blackened Iron Shield and Reethe's Badge as well as inspect Hoofprints in the burned down Inn in Dustwallow Marsh at 29 47.

The badge is really small sitting on a plank in the middle of the inn, the shield hangs on the chimney, the hoofprints are in front of the house.

These items start 3 quest:

The Black Shield
Suspicious Hoofprints

You are then send around 2 more times to other NPCs with the shield:

The Black Shield

And the badge continues to the following questline:

Daelin's Men
The Deserters

There is no follow-up to this quest, though you do get a bit more from the Horde's perspective if you come back and do their side of the chain. The conclusion to the mystery was not added into the game until Patch 2.3, thus we won't be seeing it in Classic. That patch addressed many of the abrupt endings to quest chains in Dustwallow Marsh.

Questioning Reethe

After handing in Reethe's Badge you get an escort quest to help an ogre go talk to him.
However before you can get anything out of him some alliance show up and kill him for treason.
After all three of them has been completed horde gets a quest to go talk to the smith of the Blackened Iron Shield in Thunderbluff.
Unfortunatly the smith cant possibly remember for whom he made the Blackened Iron Shield so the quest ends there.

Ah, I almost missed this... The leather strap on the back must have burned off, but it seems like it was made to fit a large person. I'd guess a tauren, actually.

That's about all I can tell you. Tell Captain Vimes I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help.
