On the panel today:
Andrea Toyias - Blizzard Senior Casting & Voice Director
Josh Keaton - Anduin Wrynn
Patty Mattson - Sylvanas Windrunner
Laura Bailey - Jaina Proudmoore
Indira Varma - Katherine Proudmoore
Susan Wokoma - Princess Talanji
Abubakar Salim - Rokhan
Alex Desert - Bwonsamdi
Maryann Strossner - Scrollsage Nola
Steve Danuser - Lead Narrative Designer
- Josh Keaton is the worlds biggest WoW nerd! He's been palying since vanilla, as an Alliance Hunter - salty about Teldrassil. Switched to Horde, as a Tauren Druid, though currently mains a Worgen. Leveled in the Old PvP system (rank 12). Started playing Anduin in Cataclysm, the casting was hilarious because as a Horde player he always tried to attack Anduin in game, but amazing because he loves the lore and spends so much time in game, he already had intimate knowledge about the game, it's characters, and world. He started playing Anduin as a teenager, but his "trinkets have dropped" and is now Manduin.
Anduin has been forced into leadership by circumstance, but is still trying to follow his fathers footsteps, forcing him to grow up fast, since his ideals don't always line up with reality. Josh hasn't experienced the kind of loss that Anduin has personally, but has done his best to roleplay it in his head, to see how that loss would affect him personally, using that as inspiration for his acting.
- Patty Mattson never would have thought she'd be playing Sylvanas, but considers it thrilling, and an honor. So many incredibly talented people come together to create these stories, not just any individual. To be able to play a character who is so complicated for so long, entering such dark places is a thrilling challenge. Sylvanas' recent cinematic was dark; bringing her scars and sacrifice to life. When they do a piece, they talk about the connection to the character, and Patty's connection was improved to get her into dark, rage induced place which Sylvanas embodies. To Patty, Sylvanas is loved, even the dark pieces, because she can associate with the pain and hurt which drives the character - the directors just need to keep dangerous things out of the studio, lest she use them as a prop!
- Laura Bailey connects with Jaina Proudmoore through body posture and the powerful mentality which Jaina now holds. Jaina has been through a lot, and it's terrifying for her confront her demons, especially because she might deserve some of them. The song from her short terrified Laura, because she hates singing in front of people, but in it Jaina is vulnerable as well, and using that fear and vulnerability helped enhance her performance.
- Indira Varma has a powerful presence, which fit her character, Katherine Proudmoore. This is Indira's first convention, she's not a gamer, but the opening ceremony moved her to tears, and despite not "speaking the language" she felt like she too was coming home. Indira is happy to get to work with Laura Bailey (as Jaina), as their characters interact. Roleplay and imagination is central to acting; emotion is key, but doesn't need to be forced if the writing is strong. The key as actors is to be present in the moment. There's something amazing about doing voice work, aside from TV/theater, because there's a freedom to not being beholden to the way you look, ethnicity, style, weight, or anything superficial - just the emotion and love that comes from your voice. Indira aspires to be like Katherine, able to forgive despite the turmoil and pain that her family has been through; she relates to Katherine as a mother.
- Susan Wokoma feels high with excitement! She can't believe the energy and passion around the convention; it's been an incredible experience. She's especially excited to see a Princess Talanji cosplay during the panel, and left the stage to get a picture and share a hug. Her connection to Princess Talanji is a coming of age story, the large story arc is difficult, but seeing where the character goes, she's excited for all the experiences and growth that Talanji goes through as a long term character. She's never played a character for as long as Talanji, and being a part of something that feels "permanent" rather than a short term character is what resonates with her... plus she gets to play a princess. She recently lost her dad, and she went to that place to play Talanji, which is hard on a person, but was made easy by the Blizzard team giving good direction and creating a safe space for her to tap into her emotions.
- Abubakar Salim respects and feels the love in the convention. Playing Rokhan has been amazing; he's been a longtime World of Warcraft player, starting as a Human Paladin, but he now belongs to the Horde (though Laura Bailey is
not
ok with the Horde bias on the panel!). Rokhan is a badass Darkspear troll; he's primal, visceral, a beautiful guy, and despite his race suffering through losing their leader, Abu admires Rokhan's strength and swagger. It's rare to get a story where anyone can find a character to connect to, and the three things that Abu relates with Rokhan are "badass, badass, and badass". It's easy to think of these characters as creatures without humanity, as the Horde as bad, but it's not true - the writing and world is deep and full of beauty.
- Alex Desert calls his first BlizzCon "damn cool". An old Jamacan movie, The Harder They Come, was the inspiration for Bwonsamdi's voice, and his instruction was simply to "have more fun", which he did, taking a serious voice and taking it ever higher - sillier and stranger. Bwonamdi isn't a "bad" guy, he's mischevious, he's there to make a deal, but Alex believes the heart of Bwonsamdi's deal making is that he want's love, he always needs his piece, and Alex relates the character to old Haitian lore.
- Maryann Strossner never expected the outpouring of support when she was first introduced to twitter, but since being here at BizzCon now understands and feels the love. Maryann believes that Scrollsage Nola says a lot of what she says, believes a lot of the things she believes, which makes it easy for her to connect with the character. She couldn't help but break a wide smile while saying "A turtle made it to the water!".
- Laura Bailey closed the panel by singing Daughter of the Sea, with Producer Logan Laflotte on guitar accompaniment, alongside Bizzard's audio choir.
