Biggest Class Changes in Phase 5 of Classic WoW and Ahn'Qiraj

Phase 5 and the release of Ahn'Qiraj is adding a whole lot to
World of Warcraft Classic
, and not the least of which finally stepping away from the fire-resistant raids of Molten Core and Blackwing Lair. With those changes in mind, we're highlighting some of the interesting class changes to expect with the release of Phase 5.
Fire Mages have the redheaded step child of PvE so far in Classic, due to being woefully ineffective in Molten Core and Blackwing Lair, but Ahn'Qiraj presents a definitive shift in that paradigm. Not only do AQ mobs lack that fire resistance, the gear inflation also leans into Fire's critical strike dependency - Ahn'Qiraj is a major step up in itemization compared to previous raids, so Fire is finally able to utilize items such as
Leggings of the Black Blizzard
with a broad enough range of spell hit, crit, and power to let the spec succeed, rather than having to make as many sacrifices. While Warriors will still highly coveted damage dealers, well geared Fire Mages should be able to start overtaking them at the high end.
Of course, Frost isn't being completely left out in the cold. It's still going to be far better for parsing Molten Core and Blackwing Lair, as well as having considerably PvP value. Since it's so easy for Mages to farm gold in Classic relative to other classes, the top parsing players will be comfortable respeccing between Fire for AQ and going back Frost for Molten Core and Blackwing Lair farm, but even those who decide to stay Fire full time can still just throw frostbolts at the fire immune bosses they come across.
Rogues have been enjoying a relatively strong standing for the majority of the expansion, which isn't really a change, but Phase 5 offers some great new advantages. First and foremost, the 4-piece
set bonus is
competitive even against BiS AQ gear
, while also being much easier to acquire - this will be a major boon to mid-tier Rogue players and alts who aren't getting as quite as much raid gear as they'd like. Many Rogues will also be taking this opportunity to switch from
, and while some players have already done this and others will stick with Daggers for awhile longer, it's a trend which will continue into Naxxramas and the rest of Classic WoW as more weapons start to compete with and surpass the coveted Grand Marshal/High Warlord weapons.
Feral Tank Druids
In what might be a somewhat surprising addition to this list, Feral Tanks also have a lot of nice itemization coming in Phase 5, as many more items start to support their peculiar itemization.
Blessed Qiraji War Hammer
in particular stands out as an extremely nice tanking weapon, although gimmicking the buff on
Manual Crowd Pummeler
will still be of the upmost importance for parsing players.
Thick Qirajihide Belt
Belt of Never-ending Agony
effectively last the rest of the expansion for mitigation and threat generation respectively, along with
Guise of the Devourer
in the helmet slot. Idols also start becoming available, with some serving as very nice improvements over the previously dead equipment slot.
Of course, none of these will really allow Druids to suddenly leap to the front of the pack and claim the primary tank spot from Warriors, but they're very nice bonuses for players who are bear tanking anyway, and a little bit more viability is never a bad thing.
Not so much a major class change as a one-off gimmick, Warlocks become an important part of the raid tank team for the
encounter, typically using two with
Greater Shadow Protection Potion
and some amount of Shadow Resistance on their gear to tank the physical damage immune Vek'lor after teleport transitions.
Viscidus Frost Damage
Also not really a class change per se,
is a unique boss in that much of the raid will be farming
in order to deal frost damage in order to freeze the boss. Only the number of attacks matters, rather than the actual damage dealt, so these items are really cheap and effective means of accomplishing that goal.
