The latest round of datamined broadcast text from Patch 8.1 PTR build 28202 covers new information on the story of Derek Proudmoore, Bwonsamdi lines from the Battle of Dazar'alor raid, and the Vulpera reaction to the conflict.
Story spoilers.
Story of Derek Proudmoore
The
8.1 Horde War Campaign
ended shockingly with Sylvanas raising the corpse of war hero Derek Proudmoore into Undeath. These actions are so upsetting that Baine and Talanji look for answers, seeking out
Vol'jin's spirit
to learn why he appointed Sylvanas as Warchief.
In the datamined broadcast text, we learn that more members of the Horde are upset by Sylvanas' actions after they witness the raising of Derek Proudmoore and Sylvanas' proclamation that she will twist his mind to become an enemy of Kul Tiras.
Baine confronts Sylvanas when she reveals her plan to raise Derek against his will.
Baine: Sylvanas!
Baine: What reason could you possibly have for this madness?!
Sylvanas: Derek Proudmoore was a hero to the Kul Tirans.
Sylvanas: And once his mind has been properly conditioned, we will allow the Proudmoores to recover their long-lost prince...
Baine: This is too far!
Sylvanas: They are sure to stage a rescue attempt when they learn of his fate.
Sylvanas: ... so he can slaughter them in their sleep.
Baine: How many times must we forsake our honor?
Sylvanas: There can be only victory or death for us, Baine.
Sylvanas: And death is mine to master.
Sylvanas then raises Derek:
Derek: What... what is this? Why am I... What have you done to me?!
Sylvanas: Why Lord Proudmoore, I've given you a chance to reunite with your family.
<Derek Wailing>
<Derek groans as being revived.>
Zelling, the Kul Tiran Tidesage who was raised as a Forsaken in return for the survival of his struggling family, is ashamed at the unwitting role he played in finding Derek's body, which has led to this.
Player: Zelling, you look disturbed. Is it about Derek Proudmoore's revival?
Zelling: "What have I done? All I wanted was to be with my family, to take care of them and ensure that they had everything they needed. And now...
Zelling: Derek Proudmoore didn't ask for such a fate. He died a hero to all Kul Tirans, and he has earned his rest beneath the tides. To think I had a hand in this... this...
Zelling: Forgive me, $n. We must set this right."
Amalia Stone, also raised as Forsaken, likely says the following lines:
"When I was a cadet, my instructors would tell me stories of Derek Proudmoore's bravery. Every captain I knew dreamt of living up to his legacy.
It pains me to see him like this, to know that he will never again be accepted by his people or his family.
And to know I played a part in it."
Baine continues to be upset at Sylvanas actions:
"I cannot abide this, $n. Each time I think Sylvanas has gone too far, she finds a new line to cross. I have watched her commit one dishonorable act after another.
She desecrates more than the memory of a fallen enemy. She desecrates the Horde itself.
This cannot stand. Something must be done. And soon."
We're not sure who says the following quote:
War isn't pretty. I know that all too well, and so does Windrunner. You have to decide what you're willing to do to achieve victory... and what you're not.
"Don't act so surprised. We both know the Banshee Queen has always been capable of tactics like these. As she's so fond of saying, they are the arrows in her quiver.
This changes nothing for me... or for what I need to do."
Valtrois, who expressed unease during the Horde War Campaign over freeing Lady Ashvane, is also concerned about the Horde:
Player: Valtrois, do you have any thoughts about Derek Proudmoore being returned?
Valtrois: "I was skeptical of the Forsaken when I first joined the Horde, but was assured that they chose their state of undeath willingly. This, however...
The nightborne suffered greatly under the Legion's heel. The atrocities I witnessed... it is distressing how much I am reminded of them now. I will leave it at that."
Gallywix doesn't really care:
"Ohhhhh, the Alliance is gonna be fumin' over this one! They're gonna come at us, guns blazin'. You know what that means, right?
It means my profit margins on Azerite armor plating are gonna go through the roof! I gotta double--no, triple--my mining operations! It's a good thing I don't pay my goons overtime. Or at all.
Now if you'll excuse me, I gotta go see a warchief about supply and demand. Scram!"
Talanji draws parallels between the actions of Sylvanas and Zul:
"My father's final act was to invoke de power of Bwonsamdi. De Zandalari are no strangers to calling upon de dead to serve us.
Yet de raising of Derek Proudmoore makes me uneasy. It reminds me of what Zul did to my beloved Rezan... a foul deed dat broke my heart.
De Alliance must be brought to justice for my father's death. But we must not let rage blind us... or make us forget de honor dat makes de Zandalari great."
Lilian Voss reiterates her pledge that she'd keep Zelling's family safe:
"Of course I made sure his family was taken care of. Do I look like a monster?
On second thought, don't answer that.
I gave Zelling my word that his family would remain safe. I intend to keep my promise, even if I have to do it from the shadows."
We wonder if all the discontent among the Horde will lead to a blurring or reshaping of factions in the future. The Nightborne admit to being skeptical of the Horde from the start, and are now very concerned with Sylvanas' behavior. There are many different races of Undead now in Patch 8.1, including Night Elves and Blood Elves--not to mention the Lightforged Undead Calia Menethil. It would be interesting if Undead customization options were available to more races in the future, especially if Sylvanas continues to go the route of raising Undead and they don't want to serve her. Talanji, Baine, and Saurfang speak of honor frequently, possibly leading to a reshaping of the classic Horde, while Sylvanas now comes out and says she wants to "master death."
Bwonsamdi
We have a few more lines from Bwonsamdi in the Battle of Dazar'alor raid.
After the Horde fights the gigantic ape Grong, Bwonsamdi resurrects him. The undead ape is then the Alliance version of the Grong fight.
Ohhhhhhh, what we got here now? Dis big fella look like him could be useful, eh?
Don't ya be lazy now, ape mon! Get up! Show them invaders dat dey shouldn't be messin' wit ol' Bwonsamdi.
During the King Rastakhan encounter, Bwonsamdi is called upon for assistance:
Ya be mighty demandin', Rastakhan! I gonna give ya da power ya seek... but ya better watch your tone.
Ya been king a long time, Rastakhan. Maybe... too long. If ya can't be gettin' da job done, perhaps dat pretty daughter of yours can.
Bwonsamdi is also happy to add new spirits to his collection:
Come on now, spirit! Ya can't let da big monkey have all da fun!
Ya fight better than me expected, outsiders. Mmm... ya gonna make a fine addition to me collection...
Vulpera
The inhabitants of Vol'dun learn about the death of Rastakhan. Perhaps they will join up with the Zandalari and later become an Allied Race?
"News spead to Vol'dun about Rastakhan's death. I couldn't believe it. I understand the Alliance wants to stop the Horde... but this is too far.
My people will do what we can to help the Zandalari through this difficult time."
Other dialogue shows that the Alliance is trying to interfere with the Vulpera, an action which could alienate them further:
"We've no direct fight with the local vulpera, but the Horde is hiring some vulpera caravans to transport supplies to their armies.
We don't know what all is in those shipments, and we can't risk allowing them to reach the Horde armies.
Avoid killing the vulpera if you can.
Use this Sandshock Totem to scare them away from the supplies.
We don't want to start another war with the vulpera. We just need to ensure they never want to work with the Horde again."
"We've no direct fight with the local vulpera, but the Horde is hiring some vulpera caravans to transport supplies to their armies.
I hope we can scare the hired caravan drivers off, and deter them from working with the Horde in the future, without making them our enemies...
War-time diplomacy is never easy."
Tess Greymane
While the Alliance does not offer the Night Elves aid in Darkshore, an action which causes Tyrande to undergo the Night Warrior ritual to fight the Horde herself, Tess Greymane stands with the Night Elves. In the novella "Elegy," we learn that Mia is among the final inhabitants of Darnassus to escape the blaze.
When our people needed a home, the night elves were there to take us in. We will not stand by as they fight to retake their own home. We fight with them!
"My mother nearly lost her life trying to save the people of Darnassus. I will do everything in my power to stop the Horde here in Darkshore.
Some atrocities simply cannot go unanswered."
Lorash
As covered
earlier in the week
,
Lorash
received a new model resembling a Undead Blood Elf. The broadcast text confirms the Valkyr raised him. In the pre-patch novellas, he was obsessed with attacking Malfurion and upset that the Night Elves exiled the Highborne years ago.
The val'kyr hardly had to even offer before I was back on my feet. What else did you expect?
<Lorash considers for a moment.>
I do hope I'll get another chance to cut off Malfurion's head. See how HE likes it.
