Some of the better spots for these are the southern beach of the southern peninsula in Azshara, the northern beaches of Tanaris, and The Hinterlands, although Feralas and Jaguero Isle in STV are also good places for them. Many of the other areas listed on the map require 150 fishing to even cast; the ones I mentioned take closer to 200 to cast, and have correspondingly "better" fish.

This recipe is a must for fishermen leveling cooking, as Yellowtail is one of the more common 'trash' fish for 200-300'ish level fishing, while persuing Stonescale, Firefin or Oily.

Recipe is red at 225. (Cook one per skillup)
Recipe is yellow at 265. (Cook one per skillup to 275, 1-2 per skillup to 285)
Recipe is green at 285. (Cook 2 per skillup to 290, 5 per skillup to 295)

Takes 85-90 fish to go from 225-295.

Also found the best (and mostly only) place for them was Hinterlands, though I didn't try many places. This is a coastal fish though, so you're not going to find it in the rivers/ponds. Also, I found that with a 210-220 fishing skill, I failed to catch my fish most always with no bauble, half the time with a nightcrawler, and always caught it with aquadynamic fish attracters. Hope this helps ^^

Idk the best place to, but off the docks in theramore you find them, about a 18% ish chance of catching one, based on the 9 yellowtails out of 48 fish total I've got right now. When I have a bigger sample I'll let you know.

I fished mine up at the dock in Steamwheedle (Classic wow) where i bought the recipes for Yellowtail and Nightfin soup. He also sells the recipes for stonescale salmon and grilled squid. Thirty minutes of fishing using bright baubles and a strong fishing pole (fishing level 225) netted: 30 yellowtails, 12 big mouth clams with zesty clam meat in them, 13 rockscale cod, 10 firefin snappers, 18 oily blackmouths, 10 stonescale eels, 8 winter squids. No missed fish. Yellowtails will stay orange to level cooking level 265, then nightfins will finish you off. I fished up the nightfins on the riverfront in Camp Mojache in Ferelas at level 35. I did purchase the giant eggs and zesty clam meat at the AH since it was not fesable to get them on my own at level 35. The cheese I purchased from the Innkeeper at windsong in Thousand Needles. I will get the zesty clam meat money back in the AH from the clams i fished up at the dock. I had 53 nightfins in my bags so ready to sell, sell, sell nightfin soup on the AH. Mount money!

I wanted a decent sample size, so I spent a bit of time in Tanaris

The result:

Raw Spotted Yellowtail: 120 (41.1%)
Raw Rockscale Cod: 32 (11%)
Raw Summer Bass: 32 (11%)
Raw Glossy Mightfish: 28 (9.6%)
Bigmouth Clam: 28 (9.6%)
Firefin Snapper: 26 (8.9%)
Stonescale Eel: 23 (7.9%)
Misc Trunks/Crates: 3 (1.02%)

Based on those numbers, with a 2% variance for margin of error and/or chance, the sample suggests a 40% drop rate at Steamwheedle Port, with all the others making up the remaining 60% (@ 10% each with trunks/chests having a miniscule offering)
