The most poorly-designed part of one of the lengthiest, most tedious questlines around. I think only reputation grinds and the AQ sceptre questline compare. Only drops from mobs that share a spawn table with every other mob in the area, has something like a 20-30% droprate at best. A low drop chance, on a low spawn rate mob, that every shaman in the area wants to obtain, and you need 10.

This makes the warlock meta quest feel like "Kill 6 boars".

As a sidenote: Because they share spawns, just kill every basilisk/buzzard/thunderlizard in sight and pray to RNGesus.

As of right now this quest is near impossible. The mobs you need to kill can be considered to be rare spawns that have a low drop chance of the item you need.. and you need 10.
Because of this there's usually 3+ Shamans hunting that very mob in every corner of Desolace which makes this even harder to do. After 5 hours I got 4/10 Whirling Essence. I can't justify spending anymore of my time on this AWFUL quest.

My quest finally updated a few minutes ago from requiring 10 down to 5.

5 drops out of 13 kills (across all three whirlwind elemental types)

As we speak, I have killed well over fifty whirlwind elementals and still haven't seen a single drop so far. This quest is completely BS.

They have reduced the requirement from 10 to 5. The biggest change is the drop rate, 3/4 dropped for me. There are also more elementals wandering, now that they are no longer hunted as fiercely.

Looted 5 off 8 kills today. Notably, I went 0 for 3 on some Whirlwind Stormwalker west of the Kodo Graveyard, and 5 for 5 otherwise on various elementals south of the Kodo Graveyard and on the way toward Shadowprey Village.
