The 3 main shields found on raiding warriors are Drillborer Disk, Elementium Bulwark, and this (Excluding the Draconian Defender and Barrier Shield).

Pros:
High armor
Defense
Block Value
Looks like a metal snake

Cons:
No Stamina

In my experience as a tank and healer, healers prefer a large hitpoint pool that never takes spike damage. Hence, high defense and high stamina to make you a real meatshield. I really do like mitigating damage, but it's hell on your healers when you *don't* dodge, and you lose 60% HP on one hit.

% to Block: This is really an overated stat. Once you have 25, using shield block gaurantees to block the next one (or two) attacks (that don't miss, aren't dodge, and aren't parried).

I keep it around with +2% blocking enchant for mitigating tons of small hits.

For pallies and shamans: The total 77 block value makes this quite nice against light rogues, don't be ashamed to want it.

This shield drops from Hakkar, the boss itself isn't that hard, as long as you have a good tactic. This shield is really great, especially for a Zul'Gurub drop! You are able to wear this shield for a very long time, until you get in Blackwing Lair and get the shield from Chromaggus, the Elementium Reinforced Bulwark (Link: https://www.wowhead.com/classic/item=19349). However, the difference between the Reinforced Elementium Bulwark and the Aegis of the Blood God isn't that big, both great shields to wear. Really worth spending your DKP on!

This a great pally tanking shield and a good starter warrior shield. Warriors should eventually upgrade to Drillborer Disk or Elementium Reinforced Bulwark. But for pallies this eccelent until the Naxx shields like Stygian Buckler or the Plague Bearer.

I agree, very nice for pallies. I got this on my paladin and it has made a tremendous difference. It was quite a nice upgrade from Draconian Deflector (Which I reccomend if you can't get your hands on the Aegis). The best part is the eyes of the snake on this shield blink :) As for enchants, I put a Thorium Shield Spike on this, because as a Paladin, I do a lot of damage with my shield, and it adds a good 20-30 extra damage.

This shield is pretty good, but you could also get Buru's skull fragment from AQ20. I think this shield would not help any other class than the warrior. It is a tank's dream when looting hakkar.

Same old arguments, same results.

Look, anyone actually going for this shield probably knows how important it is not to wipe. Before people go claiming all the items, consider how important it is that your tanks survive. Everyone else is expendable.

So yeah, your warriors really should get their hands on this, as it will help you by your group stay alive longer. Common sense.

And yes, I am a paladin, and as much as its breaking my heart to give it away to somebody else, its clear that they need it more than me.

this is a nice shield for warrior! not so great for a paladin though since it has no intell and defence isnt that usefull when your just healing.. and in pvp its all about stats not +defence.. i would rather have the malistars shield off of rag :D .. also warriors havent had any good shield in a while so its only fair for it to be warrior only.. i play a 60 paladin btw.. :D

A Paladin... as a main tank...

In order to get this, you have to kill one of the bosses in ZG. So your MT will tank the boss with a prim healer or two, while everyone else concentrates on taking the adds out.

In a balanced raid group, the Paladins will off-tank adds, leaving the MT (warrior) to tank the highest-level/dps mob/boss, with a prim healer.

So the overall view to increasing the group's functionality within a dungeon is to assign items to the character where they will be most of use. This makes the group stronger and more able to succeed. Naturally, there will be reruns of the same instance, so inevitably some items will drop more than once... so you Pallies may get one of these... but only after the MT has it (or better).

I'm MT for our guild - we have just started doing ZG runs. If this drops, I can be certain I, or one of our other warriors will get this over any other character. If an epic 2hd sword drops, priority will be given to the 2hd wielders - not me, as I'm a 1hd+shield protection warrior, built to have the %^&*e kicked out of him. Even if the 2hd sword had something like 80dps - I'd just get on with the game and not moan about it. I'd be happy that it was going to someone who would make the raid group stronger, instead of me, who would not use it at all in raids.

One of the main outcomes of dungeon raids is to enable the group to get stronger and succeed, by benefiting the character who can make the BEST use of it for the group - if you do not have that view, you may find you don't get invited to raid groups anymore... ;)

Our raid leader always puts ML (Master Looter) on for the bosses, to ensure the item is always passed to the character that can make best use of it, or to the highest roller (in this case if there are two or more warriors rolling on it)

paladins are ment for support.. they can heal and tank and ad a little extra DPS and they save other group members with their abilities.. and its not true that paladins cant hold aggro. .a paladin in my guild tanked onyxia so that proves they can. .the only paladins that cant tank are noobs and just dont know how.. but yes its obvious this is a warrior shield.. as a paladin i would much rather use malistars defender or the red dragonscale protector anyways

To start. I'm a palydan in a high-end guild doing MC, Ony, BWL & ZG on a regular basis. We've cleared everything besides BWL. I'm holy/prot specced and like a nice shield just as much as anyone :P I agree with the fact that paladins should be able to roll on gear that they can use, but in guilds, there is such a thing as the greater good....

Ok, assuming you are in ZG with your guild (there are PUGs too, in there you can be an #$%^&*!, but it will definitely give you a bad rep :P) and this beauty drops. Why in FLAMING HELL roll on this as a palydan? Or spend DKP?

Yeah, I mentioned roll... My guild uses normal rolls for ZG, And we use DKP for Ony, MC & BWL. And no, we're not noobs, we only need to clear BWL now. So everyone who keeps saying "OMGZZZZ, no guidl use teh roll in teh endgame, wtfxz n00b" is dimwitted :)

But back to the core-stuff ;) I'm a pallie > holy/prot > and I passed on this shield. And I will keep passing as long as there are warriors who can use it. Why? Because this is geared towards tanking and tanking only. Want a good pallie-shield? Easiest would be Sacred Protector. Nice armor, nice int, nice sta. For healing/cleansing/buffing purposes, Observer's Shield rocks too. As does Rhombeard Protector. After something even better? Why not try the Zulian Defender? All shields with +2000 armor and +sta, +int & some with +spi as well! Kicking Rag ass? Malistar's Defender ftw! Taking down Vael? Get Red Dragonscale Protector! Those are even better with 2700-2800 armor, nice int, sta (& spi) and either +healing or mana-regen.

"Oh noesss! I am teh takn palydan, giev plx, I takn teh Ragnaros laelaelaelael" > No you don't :P What you should be doing as a highlvl pallie in endgame instances is.... BEING VERSATILE :D If people want a tank, they'll get a tank (ie, warrior who is at least partly prot specced). Soooo, when a offtank goes down, get that add under controll. If healers are dying, stick more time & effort into healing. Everything going smoooooth? Hit mobs! :P (Personaly, I always like to help the healers out and heal continuously, no hitting mobs for me. My healing is much better than my damage anyway ;)) And ofc, cleanse ALL the time (if people are being debuffed), keep up blessings & flash of light people getting a lot of damage.

So, you take this shield as a pallie, it makes you a better tank, grats! But it greatly GIMPS you in the other areas! Whereas the warrior always has 1 role > tanking. So, pallies should be balanced, hence > take a balanced shield meaning: Decent armor, sta+int.

When all (non tanking) warriors have this shield (or something better), go for it! And when you pass for a warrior who can put it to good use, feel happy knowing that you just improved the guilds chances of taking down all those bosses that you'll try to tackle in the future :)

I'm happy with my Malistar's Defender btw ;)

If pallys have no mercy to leave the non int tank gear for wars..then why the hell should wars passon item with int..........yes a war with int isnt ideal...but neither is having a fing HEALING class..in end game..(pallys) get def items

to the pally who posted this, he obviously is the worst pally ever. And im a prottection spec warrior got this the other day i have over a 20% passive block all the time unlike noob pally. I can tank unlike a pally. I can keep agro, and i dont pussy out of duels by healing my self fully after invicible sheilding. IN addition your block stuff is wrong for warriors.... Cooldown is 6 seconds and i can block more then once during that and i have over a 90% chance to block. Second yes pallies should have a sheild but if you have ever played endgame real instances, then you would know pallies dont tank, and when they heal they have sheilds with INTELLECT, that or a good 2h again WITH INTELLECT. Now if you want a sheild go get Mallisters off of rag as he is easy as %^&*. So if you think you will get this over a warrior or roll at the same time as one, then you probably are in one of those guilds that suck and cant beat a single boss in ZG or get by adds.

p.s I like some pally's just not the stupid ones as show above

Plain and simple, I don't even see what the argument is. This shield has not int or spi, which means, to those paladins that don't understand how to play their toons, this shield is useless to you, it's hands down, warrior loot!

Funniest thread I have ever read ever.

Firstly - This is possibley the best tanking shield in the game.

So this shield should and if your raid groups good. Will go to your Main Tank.

And your Main Tank should be a warrior with defence spec.

Not a paladin.

As for making Paladins better for tanking. That's pointless. Tell me a realm thats not already flooded with level 60 warriors.

Personally I think Paladins are meant for soloing. And there only use in a Team is offtanking /backup healing/buffs/raising the dead.

Apart from buffs (which we can live without - truley) All the other aspects can be coverd by other and more usefull classes in raid situations.

Paladin = Can do everything. Not very good at anything.

I've lost the draconian Deflector and the Valor chestpieces to paladins. No way Would i lose this :)

I think this is better than drillborer by a longshot.

Just look at the stats, the Aegis has more mitagation stats. The only thing the drillborer beats it in is 100 extra hps...

Down the list:

Armor: Drillborer 2539 vs Aegis 2575 - Aegis
+stat: Drillborer +10 stam vs Aegis none - Drill
block: Drillborer 46 vs Aegis 47 - Aegis
On equips:

Drillborer has 3 arcane dmg to attacker for drillborer - why even bother this seems useless unless you're stunned and 3 dmg isnt gonna generate rage or hold aggro for you. Over the course of a fight on a boss... -if- he hits you 200 times..600 dmg..with boss mobs that have hundres of thousand of health this is just useless. Multiple mobs, DS will generate more aggro than this ever will.

+2% block - Aegis has the same

Block value +23 - Aegis has +30

but more important than all that is what the drillborer lacks: +def ...the aegis has +7 the drillborer has none.

Plus look at the item level -

Drillborer - lvl 67
Aegis - lvl 68

Look at the Vendor sell -

Drillborer - 5 Gold 79 Silver 70 Copper
Aegis - 6 Gold 50 Silver 77 Copper

I'll certainly be saving my dkp's for this over the drillborer

WHY is it that pallys want EVERY peice of armour and every wepon?. The plate class is split into 2 spaces one for defence/block/stam and the other Int/Spirt/healing benefits. How pallys can be so greedy as to have the 50% of wepons with INT and the armour with INT/Healing AND still want the defence gear and block % sheilds is beyond me. Just because you can USE the armour or wepon doesnt mean you should or need it, if you honestly need to have a high block % with a pally and a protection build your Tanks are worthless, Pallys, along with hunters and squishies should never be touched by mobs except if they can AOE or Multiattack.

The pally tree for protection is good for letting the pally absorb/stop/ attacks by blocking and damaging the attacker, but honestly if you have to block in an end game instance your tanks are ^&*! and worthless. Get a clue, get a life, and get SOME BLOODY HEALING GEAR AND HEAL ME!. Thats your purpose in an end game instance is to heal/clence and keep others alive while dealing dps... cough cough..

Just because you can block doesnt mean $%^&, are you going to be the priority of heals? no you not, is your survival essencial to the raid? no its not. There are always another 10+ pallys to take your spot from the healadin army that goes to MC.

Blocking is best used for Warriors and although they are not as superior as a pallys tree for defence, the one thing a pally wont be is a MT or even an offtank, and if you are your guild needs some warriors, even fury speced ones would hold more agro then you (and dont give me *!@# about pally agro, i know how PETHETIC the agro control is, its based on luck when you get your procs to keep the enemy on you, and fury doesnt do nothing 60% threat compared with taunt is worthless)

So leave the WARRIOR armour to the WARRIORS and get some int and serve a purpose and heal someone, thats your !@#$ty class role now live with it

I for one am glad i play on horde side. Pally's, the reason why your end gear has no str. is because you're not meant to tank, any Pally that thinks he can tank close to, as well, or better then a warrior is an idiot. Granted yes Pally's are able to absorb a ton more damage then warriors with all their talents in protection spec, but they don't have any talents (as said above) for keeping aggro which makes them nothing more then healers. If you didn't want to heal, and you wanted to tank, just roll a damn warrior and get it over with.

i am a pally, and i think i'd pass on this for these reasons;

1) whether i am in a high end instance, or in a good five man in scholomance, i find its very hard for me to hold aggro. i've tried it as a prot/holy using intell/spirit armor and as a prot/ret pally, using all crit gear. its just too hard to keep aggro as a paladin.

2) because i am so rarely getting hit by physical melee, i've gone two handed in almost all situations. for those rare cases where i should be arming a shield, i have a force reactive disc and it seems to work just fine...but really, since i spend so little of my time being the one that draws fire, i really think its better to go two handed, so i can at least do some real damage when the time comes to melee. i mean, i really dont see the point in arming a shield if the MoBs ignore me so often. i'd rather have a good two hander that gives me some nice buffs, and a chance to inflict some hurt when i wade into the fray.

3) and, of course, it does help the raid i am on for the warrior to be as armored and +defense oriented as he can be.

would i like one? sure i would....who wouldn't? can i sympthize with a paladin who would wish to spend his DKP on it? yes, i could. i don't drive sports cars, but if someone offered me a ferrari, i think i'd make room in my garage for it.

i think the only thing that grates me, and other paladins, is the "keep your weak ass paladin mitts off of this, because its MINE...all paladins are greedy #$%^s" attitude that some of the warriors tend to cop.

you know, some of us go to the really high-end instances just two or three times per month. we are hoping for maybe our first epic, and something like this shield can trigger a "holy @#$%, that is one nice shield" sensation. then you look at the draconian deflector....or some other blue shield you farmed in scholo/strath/baron/ubrs, and see the word "upgrade" printed in big, bold type all over this shield, and its natural you'd like to have one for yourself, even if you are a paladin.

Well...

I go along with the opinion, that a Prot-Warrior should be able to roll on this at first. But then... any off-specced warrior and shaman or pally should be able to roll on this as well.

As being hordeside, shamen do some nice tanking work in zul'gurub, as we don't cc any of the trashmobs - just tanking all of them and let hell break over'em.

Again - yes, your MT should get this first. Depending on the shield he wears now (something blue guees), this is a boost of up to 2% damage he will take less, means being way more manasaving for your healers. Also the high blockrate will help him to spam revenge more frequent, means more and rageefficent aggrobuilding.

And... a prot-specced tank will wear his shield in almost any situation, while off-specced warriors, shamen and paladins will switch weapongear quite frequent - depending on the situation.

ive been at this for a few months now, it dropped for the FIRST time tonight and some @#$%ing pick up extra war we just invited as our third hakkar tank won it...grrrrr was very annoyed, the 2 tanks (me and another war with full might) rolled a1 and a 3...i was very mad, this could be easily the best shield available. i will continue on my quest for the aegis and i advise every war to get one, its bomb diggity fresh...oh and im horde so i dont have to worry about a pally problem hehe.

I play a 60 warrior (gnomes ftl) on Skullcrusher and I got this shield as a guild first. It is very nice with my 5/8 might, medallion of steadfast might, onyxia blood talisman, and quel'serrar. The other warriors with Drillborer Disk rolled on this because it is obviously better....why you ask?
+7 defense = more damage blocked
+30 block > +23 block obviously
Drillborer proc: 3 arcane dmg to attackers....wtf is that crap?
though drillborer has +10 stam...Aegis has more armor and more block therefore the extra stam is made up for and then some by the damage blocked out

I highly encourage any warrior to roll (or use dkp...w/e your ZG system is)on this as it's the best shield outside of BWL and AQ40. Not to mention it looks cool as hell :O enjoy

This shield is meant for a warrior no its not class specific or anything like that but it is a warriors weapon... its not a good paladin shiled for it gives no intellect, spirit, or + to healing. Therefore only a paladin should roll on it if all the warriors either already have it or have a better one

So my guild's planning on downing Hakkar probably by end of month, but we started doing the summonings in Silithus. If Earthen Shield were to drop, should I (MT) take it, or should I pass to OT for when Aegis of the Blood God drops?

My choice is, between those 3:

Buru's Skull Fragment
(with Lesser Block Shield's enchantment: +2% chance to block or +7 stamina)

Reasons: more stamina over all other stats and defense + that enchantment.

This finally dropped for my guild and like others we only use dkp for ony/BWL/Mc/AQ40 and roll in ZG i was very happy that pallys were reasonable and passed this to me because i was using draconian deflector and idk about u guys but in my opinion Off tanking in BWL with it really....hurts! but anyway i rolled a 98 and now i got this baby finally !

After I started and lead a ZG PuG for the Destroyer of Worlds, taking 12 hours of one day, this thing drops. It got defaulted to me. Its kinda cool... but why didn't Zin drop, WHY!

You forget the Fire Resistance on DD... Which is the only thing i miss on this item.. Besides that it's *drool*... Has anybody got a screen of this? I want to see if blizzard finally made an epic shield that actually looks lik a shield, and not like the bottom of a tin can or a turtle shell..

Block = SHield Block Value+Block effects+ 1pt block/15 str

therefore a warrior with 300str using this shield would block 47+30+20
thus negating 97 damage, while tanking warrios brun rage throough a move called shield block which ireases block chance by 100% fo rthe next 6 seconds thus allowing the warrior to reuce damage taken, generally MCmobs hit plate for 600 dmg pet hit so this in feract is a reduction of 16% dmg taken which is very considerable

Got this yesterday, my second Hakkar kill (my guild has killed him many times). I'm basically an off-tank, used when either our main tanks or unavailable or just plain can't be bothered (can't blame them, tanking the spider etc is boring). The two main tanks (who look almost identical, both cows with quel'serrar etc) Drillborer Disk. They didn't need it so i got it. Didn't even have to roll, seeing as the guild leader recognises that its far more useful in my hands than it is in a shaman's hands (IMO and in his opinion - your opinion may differ but don't start a flame about it as its pointless). Looks good, now im just waiting on a Bloodlord's Defender to replace Bone Slicing Hatchet hehe

I've got no luck with Hooker... err.... Hakkar...

I've killed Hakkar many times for Zin'rokh, but never seen it drop. Hakkar was finally nice to me and let me have this shield (nobody else needed it). I'm just a DPS warrior in my guild, but every warrior needs a good set of tanking gear. This shield was a nice upgrade from Draconian Deflector. Buru's shield is damn good also, and IMO is one of the coolest looking shield in the game, but for a DPS warrior I don't think the difference between these shield matters too much. I mean the most I'll be doing is tanking trash in BWL/AQ40. I will very rarely be offtanking a boss.

One thing I should say though... Even though Buru's shield has a great +20 stam bonus on it, you can make up for stamina in other places. You can get stamina enchants to wherever you need them... And that 200 health isn't going to make or break you.

I have this shield on my shaman! total waste, but none of the warriors wanted it and well... dkp is useless after expansion anyways so I took it, nice upgrade from my green shield. :P

and it looks cool with the green sparkly eyes.

Nice shield for being a hakkar drop, owns drillbore disk and is easily usable till you can get either the elementium reinforced bulwark or the AQ shield.

I have Drillborers and DD. This is much better. The only thing DD has over this shield is the stamina, which is a joke when you're tanking the end game instance. Especially considering that the block value you gain from this shield will negate the missing stam that DD has. On wait, DD has +3 more defense...

this dropped for our MT on our 3rd killing of hakkar. first was mainhand warblade, second was zin'rokh, so i would say hakkar has been very good to our guild.
