This would be a great ring for say a Feral Druid, but for a Tanking Warrior, or even as a piece of Tank Gear, its not the best item. Nagelring (https://www.wowhead.com/classic/item=11669) is a MUCH better ring and is found much earlier in BRD.

it's only 460% of the armor contribution of items

this does not include:

MotW armor bonus
armor kits or enchantments
bonus armor from agility

Only the base armor.

A 360% increase is in fact (armor x 4.6), and not (armor x 3.6)

Doesn't make sense? Think about it for a second:

armor x 0.60 (*reduction* of 40%)
armor x 1.60 (increase of 60%)
armor x 2.60 (increase of 160%)
armor x 3.60 (increase of 260%)
armor x 4.60 (increase of 360%)

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!

Before you say "I don't get (armor x 4.6) when I shapeshift", remember, the Dire Bear armor multiplier does NOT take into account armor from agility, NOR Mark of the Wild.

So you won't see a 360% (x 4.6) increase to TOTAL armor, you will to the armor that's directly contributed from your items.

I haven't done the quests yet and will update this with corrections and additions as I work through the chain. (the info I have tracked down to do this chain is sketchy)

Druids can tank. Very well.

A druid can tank effectively in MC, almost as effectively as a warrior. Over time (yes, over time), a druid in DB form generates roughly the same amount of aggro as protection spec'd warrior. A protection spec'd warrior may generate quicker snap aggro, but has roughly the same long-term aggro as a druid. Maul and swipe have large amounts of innate "hate" built into them, especially on maul crits. Coupled with some druids having 11k+ armor and 6k+ HP unbuffed, they can effectively tank against -most- bosses in molten core, even Ragnaros. However, for the most part, guilds don't try it with BWL, so it's uncertain. Bosses such as Magmadar however, have the AoE fear that druids can't counter like warriors, making them a far more ideal choice, along with the parry skill.

A warrior tanks "better" because of the parry skill. A lot of plate items have +defense, making it easier for plate to obtain +defense than druids, adding to block, dodge, and parry skill. Parry in particular though is why warriors are the ideal tanks against bosses. Block doesn't help much against 3k hits, and dodge can be performed by a druid in bear. Warriors also have berserker rage to counter fear, making them the better tank for fear situations.

Overall though, when comparing druid and warrior tanking, a druid tanks with more HP and more armor than most warriors minus parry skill, where a warrior tanks with parry and probably more dodge skill. The aggro is actually about the same however, and they are both good tanks when supported right, geared right, and played right.

druids can be just as viable as tanks as warriors. i have a lvl 60 feral druid with over 11k armor/372 def and am frequently used as an OT in 20/40 man raid instances. there are pros and cons to both tank types -- where druids can achieve a much higher AC, warriors can parry and block. both have a variety of aggro-generating tools and a form of taunt. most importantly, the tanking capability of both classes is highly dependant on player skill. i've seen a druid try to tank and do a horrible job and i've seen the same *cough* quality work from a warrior ("please please can't i use my 2h for the phat dps?" or the lvl 60 warrior who somehow didn't know that thunderclap would wake sheep... or, apparently, understand that he shouldn't be in battle stance to begin with). i've shown myself to be a better tank than many a warrior and there are some very skilled warriors that i could never begin to compete with.

a feral druid also gets a 20% boost to stamina... with imp fort, blood pact and kings i can achieve around 7500 hps despite having to nerf my stats by using high level green "of defense" items (at the cost of around 1k bear form health). druids also can, through talents, get a 15% boost to ALL threat they generate and gain 5 rage with every crit... add omen of clarity to that and you can generate a ton of rage -- i've used swipe (15 rage skill that hits 3 mobs) after an omen of clarity proc (makes rage cost of next special attack 0) and crit on all three mobs, effectively gaining 15 rage instead of losing it. i can heal myself for 2k over time once every 3 mins if my rage bar is full (sometimes a bit more if some of the tics crit).

while warriors have a slight advantage over druids when it comes to snap aggro-grabbing since we only have taunt and bash, druids can generate just as much (and sometimes more) threat than warriors. also, if we get thrown/knocked back in combat or are switching targets to one that's not in range yet, we can charge every 15 secs while in combat at a cost of 5 rage. the two biggest downfalls for a druid tank that i've found are being able to find +resistance and +def on leather tanking gear... there is honestly just a lot more available to warriors and they can achieve higher levels of def/a specific resistance than a druid ever could.

a druid *can* MT for a group/raid for any instance except the 20/40 man dungeons just as well as a warrior. yes, we are designed for flexibility but we also have the option to specialize in one area to the point of being on-par with members of the class we're "mimicking." it all comes down to spec, gear and player skill (an often-overlooked factor). for ZG/MC/BWL and the like, we are better-suited for the role of OT. i readily admit that there are certain situations where a warrior is by far the better choice of MT when they both have the best gear available to them and are comparable in skill but druids are none-the-less capable of being very viable OTs even in the most difficult content. there is no way to prove that one class is an undeniably better tank than the other since there are so many factors involved and both classes have their strengths and weaknesses.

Ok I find that my druid can tank just as well as a warrior, but general concensus is that a warrior is better suited for MT for whatever reason...

...thats doesn't bother me in the slightest! Instead of arguing about who is the better tank can't we all just get along? :P The MT for my guild is so glad to have another tank of equal ability there to just charge (talent) right in when needed! I usually spend my time decursing and of he gets knocked back or even dies Im RIGHT in there to save the day! I get loads of credit for it too. In even harder situation if we do split taunting so we alternate aggro, means we both take 1/2 the amount of damage giving more space for mistakes. I welcome you warriors and hope you welcome me.

The thing with the driud armor increase in Dire Bear or Moonkin form is that "armor contribution from items is increased by 360%" this mean:

150 * 360% * (110% with Thick hide) = 594 armor, quite nice

I'm an alliance feral druid, if I want another "armor ring" togeather with my Ring of Protection I'll have to go for the epic MC drop Heavy Dark Iron Ring.
The horde on the other hand have this and an 3rd armor ring in Band of the Great Tortoise from a lvl 50 horde quest.

Why would allies want OUR ring when the 1 they get has more stats AND 1% crit chance?
