Making Warsong Gulch - Learn More On Classic Development in The WoW Diary Kickstarter

Rokman:This is a photo of what is referred to as “Banana” within the community. It’s the ramp that connects Tunnel and Roof. My question is, when designing the length of Banana, were items like Pozione della Libertà d'Azione or Stivali Razzo dei Goblin taken into consideration? Did any items influence the design of the map at all?

John Staats: Neither item existed when I built this area. In the Quake CTF games, we had grapple hooks and rocket jumps to get to these areas, so the earthen ramp was a band-aid for these missing mechanics. I would have added a teleporter if I knew how to script it myself, but that was probably too science-fictiony.

Rokman:When designing the map, were “secret” jump spots intentional or mostly a player discovery? For instance, at the Alliance Fence there is a tiny gap in the fence that players can jump through. This gap isn’t present on the horde side at all. This gives the Horde an advantage when taking the flag out, and it gives the Alliance an advantage when a Druido is running around the base avoiding damage.

John Staats: That fence was made by the exterior level designer, it's definitely a bug. It should be reported and treated as such. I'm actually surprised it's still in the game!

Rokman:Some jumps, however, are very toxic, and mostly discouraged amongst the player base. This one in particular, at the Horde Graveyard, where Horde players can jump on top of the “Leaf Hut”. It can make it extremely difficult for the Alliance to kill a flag carrier if he sits on top of that Hut (and the Horde players are constantly resurrecting nearby)

John Staats: Yikes. All the huts in the center were added for flavor by the exterior level designers. They did a great job too. There ought to be collision-fences preventing this. Definitely a bug...and honestly, the GMs might consider it a geometry exploit...players ought to be careful (but I don't know the banning policy these days)

Rokman:To pick up the flag, a Druido has to be in "Human Form", meaning they can’t pick it up while in . Druids also can’t cast Forma Celere, , or while indoors. As a newer player, these design choices frustrated me and felt restrictive to the class, but once I learned Warsong Gulch, these class limitations finally made sense, because while inside the base, it count as “indoors” these limitations exist to make it more difficult for the Druid. My question is, were these development choices intentional or just a happy accident?

John Staats: They were a total accident. Literally no attention was given to class roles other than raid balance and flavor. I played a druid as my main, and I didn't realize these things would make druids good flag carriers. PvP wasn't even a consideration until the game designers finally started acknowledging that it wasn't "degenerative gameplay." How many PvP servers did we have at launch? Was it 2 or something insane? LOL

Rokman:Bomba Sfollabestie is one of the most powerful items inside Warsong Gulch, it doesn’t require Engineering to use, it doesn’t have a “cast time” like a regular Granata di Ferro, and it causes a Bear Druido to be feared for 10 seconds, and the fear doesn’t break on damage! Thankfully, the Druid Fregio dell'Alleanza does break fear, but they really have to save that for a long stun like a from a Ladro. In the Warsong Gulch private server meta, Flash Bomb is banned because of how powerful it is. Was this item taken into consideration when designing Warsong Gulch? And an even bigger question, did the developers realize that Druids would be the best flag carriers, because of their unique ability to instantly shift out of any slowing effects?

John Staats: The devs didn't plan for any of these predicaments, nor did they consider them important enough to change. You're touching on the tip of the iceberg. For every battleground, we expected tons of class and item imbalances. The racial abilities were another big problem. And don't even start on the Paladin bubble. Or the talent trees. Our game was broken so many ways, and not just for battlegrounds. We simply had to ignore balance problem or we'd never make cool new items (for fear of breaking down gameplay like the Flash bomb). Removing broken items sets player expectations, so devs have to be careful how far they want to roll this boulder uphill.
