I see topics all the time about "king of AOE" or some such. so I'm wondering what determines which class is the "King"
Is King determined by:
Number of AoE spells
Variety of spells
Max potential DPS
Some combination of these
Druids:
Hurricane
Hunters
Explosive trap

Pallys are better than Hunters and Shaman imo. as the totems can be destroyed befor they even do damage and hunters dont tend to have enough mana to do aoe much at all.... Just my thougts

its hard to say because the SoC spam usually nets the #1 spot in AoE pulls, but a mage is supposed to be king from blizzard's stand point, but you've got an error in your variety cast time part, hunters have Volly is a channeled spell not an instant,
http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=27022
the spell doesn't say channled but its just like blizzard and rain of fire
The king of AoE imo is the lock but i'm a mage and the grass is always greener..
Fixed the Volley item, Ty.
Why do you say lock? Is it just feeling or is there some numbers there?
SoC Pros:
Good Damage
Ranged
Fire and Forget
good radius
Cons:
2s Cast Time, no mobility, interruptable
Dispellable
Victim can shift center point to a less desirable place
Expensive mana wise
AE Pros:
Good damage
Instant, hi mobility, uninterruptable
Cons:
Small Radius
Point Blank Range
Blizzard and Rain of Fire are pretty equal

Personally, after playing around on my 70 mage and 70 paladin for a while, I'd say the paladin is faaar superior when it comes to AoEing. Not because their AoE has no damage cap and a good spell damage coefficient, nor because it inflicts a damage type that there's no resistance to. Paladins are good At AoEing because they can do this over and over and never place themselves at risk. Even solo, my recently-hit-70 can AoE to death 30-40 of the level 72s outside BT simultaneously, drink once and be ready again. Half the time when I try that with my mage, one of them resists and ruins the whole attempt (usually killing me in the process).
There's more to deciding who the king of AoE is than sheer damage. There's control, reliability and endurance to consider as well. Just my 2cp.
Lol, well the
http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=21180
are super easy for a tankadin to aoe down. Conversely these
guys
can be a huge pain
But this is a more general question of who is the best all around AoE class(group/solo/pvp/pve/etc) not who is the best solo AoE grinder.

i say lock because i watched a lock in AV take 6 people down with nothing but Seed of Corruption, though its the same guy who 1v4'd in an arena as a resto druid...
SoC can do major DPS in AV. It can be interrupted, dispelled, or just have the person run away from his team mates
In BGs SoC maybe the king of DPS AoE spells but for CC and movement modifiers think
Frost Nova, always sweet to destealth and trap a rogue with this, also good for destroying a GY rush
Cone of Cold's slow effect
Blizzard w/ Frostbite and Improved Blizzard
Shadowfury with its stun is also very nice
Dragon's Breath with it's disorent

HI, but it is not an AREA OF EFFECT attack, It is a hit 2 people in near proximity attack. I did not include any spell/ability that would not damage every enemy in the given area.

Didn't forget to mention them , but they are not an AREA OF EFFECT attack, they are a hit X enemies in near proximity attacks. I have removed Thunder Clap from the Warrior list as well for this reason.
I did not include any AoE spell that did not have a damage component. If shout/howls are added then several shaman totems must added and lots of hunter traps. It is also very difficult to compare non-damage abilities because situationally 1 may be AMAZING or totally worthless.

Warriors are still great at killing multiple mobs at once with attacks like: cleave, whirlwind, sweeping strikes, retaliation, thunder clap, demo shout, berserker's rage, and intimidating shout. Sure it's not considered "aoe" in comparison with the spells you are listing but it accomplishes the same goal.

Amount of various AOE abilities doesn't matter. All that matters here is controll and damage, those two things alone makes the King.

Warrior can do more "aoe" damage than paladin yet they haven't made the list.
