Complete your Shaman Class Quests to get your totems ASAP! These quests start as early as level 4. They may be tough, but without completing these, you will be locked out of many important abilities. The only exception to this rule is the Water Totem questline, which requires a huge amount of running around the world, and due to the lower importance of Water Totems to your efficiency, can be safely postponed until you run near the quest objectives naturally, or once you get your first mount.

Weapon enchants are also important no matter the spec, especially Rockbiter, which increases your damage output significantly. Make sure your weapon is always enchanted as soon as you buy it with your first copper coins!

Save up gold so you can purchase your mount at level 40, and start saving again immediately for your epic mount at 60. It will probably take a while to get it but if you are planning on doing any world activities/grinding, it will speed them up immensely.

When approaching levels 50 and up, begin checking out your Pre-Raid BiS gear and where it drops. You can begin farming certain dungeons early on, while still gaining XP, to obtain some of that Pre-Raid BiS gear before 60.

Your mana should be used exclusively for Chain Lightning and Totems. You won't be doing as much damage as say, Warriors, but your buffs will help their damage immensely to compensate. If you're unable to keep dropping totems such as Windfury Totem because you're low on Mana, don't use as many offensive spells.

Place your totems strategically to maximize their usage by your group, and to minimize your Mana consumption. A good strategy is to drop your totems at the start of each engagement and using Chain Lightning once.

Even though you're Enhancement, don't neglect your ability to heal. You should act as an off-healer if your group's healer is running OOM. You can also off-heal while you main healer drinks to speed things along for your group.

Earth Shock is invaluable to interrupt deadly spells, so use it as much as you need against dangerous enemies. Be mindful that it causes extra threat, though.

Restoration

Restoration's playstyle allows for a lot of flexibility, with Chain Heal working great for groups splitting threat around or using Healing Way to heal your group's main tank.

Your utility is, once again, vital for your group. Make sure you're dropping your totems strategically to maximize their usage.

Be mindful of the five-second rule (see The Five-Second Rule, a Story of Love & Hate). You will need to pay extra attention to that as totems also trigger the rule.

As Shaman lacks Mana regeneration when casting, you will need to be especially mindful of your Mana. A good strategy is to heal in bursts - Wait for your group members to be low, heal them to full, and don't heal for a while. However, this strategy is dangerous if not performed correctly.

Ensure you have plenty of food, drinks & reagents in your bags. Constantly communicate with your group members and always drink the second you get out of combat.

At level 4, you will receive the first series of quests that will grant you your Earth Totem, which allows you to cast defensive totems such as Stoneskin Totem and Stoneclaw Totem.

At level 10, your second quest chain will grant you the Fire Totem. This totem is used for offensive totems such as Fire Nova Totem and Magma Totem.

Your third totem, the Water Totem, will come with a quest chain at level 20. This totem is more used for restorative totems such as Healing Stream Totem and Frost Resistance Totem.

Your final and arguably most important totem is the Air Totem, obtained after a quest chain at level 30. This totem is used for group enhancement abilities such as Windfury Totem and Windwall Totem.

After this, you will go without Class Quests until all the way to level 50, where you will go through a lengthy quest leading you (in a future Phase, not currently available) to the The Temple of Atal'Hakkar, allowing you to select powerful rewards: Azurite Fists, Wildstaff or Enamored Water Spirit. Changes to Questing in Classic WoW

Quests and Objectives are not displayed on the map. To put it: you will have to do some exploring. You will get lost at some point during a quest, and you might have to read the actual quest or go to an external website to find out what you are supposed to be doing. While there may someday be a leveling addon for Classic, part of the game "experience" is feeling immersed in the world and creating an adventure of your very own.

Zones don't guarantee a certain amount of levels: Once again, coming from BFA or one of the later expansions, you might be used to finishing a zone (Vol'dun for instance) and expecting to be two levels higher. In Classic, the difficulty of zones vary, and especially as a Priest, you will want to do a lower difficulty quest. You'll find yourself bouncing between a few zones at any given level range.

Best Shaman Questing Zones in Classic WoW

The Barrens (10-33): This is the big one, as it is the meeting point for three of the four races of the Horde, this zone has no shortage of quests and will easily propel you toward level 20. As great as this zone is, be ready to compete for mob tags, as there will be a lot of players funneled into this one zone.

Silverpine Forest (10-20): This is the Undead version of The Barrens; it has some decent quests to complete, but, I usually don't end up coming here at all.

Stonetalon Mountains (15-25): Although this zone offers Alliance quests, it is almost entirely a Horde zone. This zone is fantastic as it is right next to the Barrens, and the level range of the two zones overlap.

Hillsbrad Foothills (20-31): Home to the infamous Southshore vs. Tarren Mill world PvP spot, this zone has a lot of good quests for both Alliance and Horde and is usually worked into most people's leveling routes.

Ashenvale (19-30): Another flavorful zone as this is the home to what will become Warsong Gulch, plenty of quests for both Alliance and Horde.

Thousand Needles (24-35): Home to the infamous Shimmer Flats, this is a great zone for both factions to get almost an entire level. It also has a questing hub for Horde.

Stranglethorn Vale (30-50): probably one of the most infamous zones in the whole of World of Warcraft, you will be coming to this zone off and on from level 30 and up towards level 50.

Desolace (30-39): Home of the dungeon Maraudon, this is one of my favorite zones in the game, and I spend many levels here. There are both Horde and Alliance quest hubs here.

Arathi Highlands (30-40): This zone is home to the 2nd battleground Arathi Basin, there are two hubs here (one for each faction), and there are plenty of good kill quests here.

Badlands (36-45): This is a quick and dirty zone, while it only has a hub for Horde; it is a quick level, and if you have enough players around your level you can do an Uldaman quest run.

Tanaris (40-50): Home to the dungeon Zul'Farrak, I recommend questing here as well as doing a full quest run of ZF.

Feralas (41-60): This is one of the less popular zones for people to quest at, it's worth coming here in your early 40s as there are plenty of quests for both factions.

Searing Gorge (43-56): This zone is particularly exciting because you get your first taste of the end-game, On one side of Blackrock Mountain is a lower level zone with various quests coming from the Thorium Brotherhood.

Burning Steppes (50-59): The other side of Blackrock Mountain, this is a higher level zone and has hubs for both Horde and Alliance, you will probably come to this zone a couple of times as the level range is quite large. Some dungeon quests come from this zone.

Felwood (47-54): This zone is a must-complete for me as the quests are quite good and you will need to come here to get your Cenarion Beacon, which is needed to farm various consumables like Whipper Root Tuber.

Un'Goro Crater (48-55): This is another hot zone as it has a plethora of quests and will get you nearly two levels from completing the crater.

Western Plaguelands (46-57): This zone is excellent for quick leveling, as you can complete the "cauldron" questline for massive amounts of experience. It's worth noting that you need a breadcrumb quest from your faction's major city.

Eastern Plaguelands (54-59): Home to the legendary Naxxramas, this zone gives you another taste of the end-game immediately upon questing. You will spend a lot of time here even at max level.

Winterspring (55-60): This is an amazing zone, it has a ton of quests that give a ton of experience, and you can get Cache of Mau'ari, allowing you to farm Jujus, a very good consumable for raids.

Closing Thoughts on Leveling a Shaman in Classic WoW

Quality of Life changes have been implemented over the years: If you are coming from Battle for Azeroth, there are going to be a lot of not-so-friendly changes that make questing harder, or at least take more time. Quests and objectives won't be marked on your map, so you will have to do a lot more exploring. There won't be a steady stream of quests from 1-60, so you will have to combine questing and grinding enemies for the experience to level. There's no AoE looting, and quest items take space in your bags. Cooldown abilities are available much less frequently, and there's significantly less personal healing, which adds much more downtime in between pulls as you sit and eat or use First Aid/Alchemy to heal. Playing efficiently is the best thing you can do to speed up your leveling.

Enhancement to 40 and Elemental from then on is optimal: Enhancement is a great option to kill enemies with a relatively low downtime, but Elemental is one of the highest burst DPS classes after level 40, which allows it to kill enemies and drink before Enhancement is done with his enemies at this point. Feel free to play whatever spec you enjoy the most, however, as haste sometimes makes waste, and truthfully, all specs have their pros and cons.

Grouping is Worthwhile and Helpful: If you already have a group/guild that you are going to play Classic with, it might be worth coordinating with them to level with a Warrior or Rogue to make the overall group leveling experience more efficient. As I said before, Shamans are good solo but, they are also great at buffing their group with totems.

Buy abilities only when needed: A lot of people don't think it is possible to afford a mount by level 40, in reality, it's much easier as long as you only buy the necessary spell upgrades to save money. It's also worth noting that following this guide for buying spells will save you a lot of travel time as flights back to major cities or your questing hub can take a lot of time away from leveling.

Weapon upgrades are significant for Shamans: The biggest upgrade you will get is a better weapon, you should be ready to put forth the extra time and/or effort to get the best weapons for leveling. Some of them come from quests, while others can be bought from a vendor.

I would only recommend buying Bullova at lvl 30 if you aren't able to pick up Corpsemaker from RFK by then.

As an enhancement shaman you should always look for the weapon with the highest possible top-end damage, especially after you get Stormstrike.
With that in mind, you should most definitely pick up the level 45 quest to kill Princess Theradras "Corruption of Earth and Seed" for the alliance or for the horde. This wasn't mentioned in the guide.

The Resurgence Rod from that quest is ridiculously good.
Not only is it in the top tier of weapon damage, but it's also perfectly viable (preferred, even) to start healing with, if you're thinking of switching over to restoration in the 50s.

Also, skipping the quest would be silly. There will always be plenty of people wanting to do the quest, since the rewards include Thrash Blade, one of the best leveling swords in the game for warriors and rogues.

Tip that costs 1g:

The 5% mana from Ancestral Knowledge doesn't even cover the mana cost of a single Rank 1 Earth Shock until around level 25 (with some +int gear) essentially wasting 5 talent points for the first half of your journey to 60.

I recommend taking 5/5 Shield Specialization (+5% chance to block, +25% dmg blocked) until finding a lvl 20+ viable 2H weapon and then using your first 1g respec to pickup the 2H weapon weapon talent and switch to Ancestral Knowledge. The damage reduction from Shield Spec will increase uptime and survivability for those first 20 or so levels, allowing you to level faster and easier.

There's some good info in here, but Krug doesn't half overvalue Spirit in Classic.

Regardless of what spec you're going with every +1 Spirit on your gear is -1 for a damage increasing stat, or more health.

Loading your gear up with Spirit is just gonna slow down how quickly you kill things. And the slower killing means; more spells cast, more damage taken, and a lower XP rate.

The fact that the author seems to value spirit over any other stat (as brought up by other comments) kind of makes it hard to take anything in guide seriously. I mean were not even talking about a healing or casting spec... That on top of the fact that this guide sort of assumes that you'll never want be the main healer in low level dungeons, according to what you should pick up from the trainer, so apparently you don't need to keep up on your healing/resto spells and ranks, regardless of the fact that they're extremely helpful solo as well.

Decided to play Horde on Classic and give Shaman a try. See how the other side of the game is. So far loving Shaman and I'm only level 34 ATM. Been taking my time and learning leveling spots that when I decide to make some alts I know where to go and what to do

Been leveling as Enhancement and freaking love Windfury! I feel like it procs way more then 20% for me at least. Can't wait to see how they turn out in end game raids and PvP.

one more question about the new skill tree. You suggest now "Shield Specialization" with 5 points while only suggest 2 handed weapons?

The talent order for Resto recommends taking points in Improved Reincarnation at levels 15/16 even though the spell Reincarnation cannot be learned until level 30. Seems better to hold off on taking that talent for about 14-15 levels and move the other points up a couple levels until Reincarnation is able to be learned.

I am using this guide to level a restoration Shaman, and I just hit level 14. I think I'm nitpicking because it's easy enough to figure out, but Lightning Bolt Rank 3 becomes available at level 14, and Lightning Shield Rank 2 becomes available at level 16; you have them vice versa in the guide. I haven't found any other inaccuracies but will gladly report more if I find them.

HC SSF should probably skip Skinning/LWing for Herbalism/Alchemy which is more useful in the early levels at least. YMMV based on skill and likelihood of surviving to 40+.
