Season 2 PvP Meta Predictions

With Season 2 of Shadowlands starting, it’s the perfect time to look at what I believe are going to be the top performing specs and how those changes are likely to impact both the 2s and 3s meta in the coming weeks.

Melee DPS
To kick things off, let’s discuss in what direction I anticipate the melee meta will move towards. We’ve seen a handful of changes happen to several melee specializations - the most notable being the introduction of a Mortal Strike effect for Feral Druids in the form of the Wicked Claws PvP talent. Ret Paladins stand alongside Feral Druids in receiving an incredibly strong new PvP talent in the form of
Jugement des purs
which will allow them to keep their team, and more importantly their healer out of crowd control. Finally, we have Frost Death Knights who are seeing a redesign of
Voile de l’hiver
into the new PvP talent
Morsure du froid
which reduces enemy Haste by 12%.
All things considered, I believe these three melee will likely be the most meta-defining ones and I won’t be surprised if any combination of the three will make up an S-tier composition in the 3v3 bracket as we progress through Season 2, especially Feral/Retribution or Feral/Death Knight as both compositions will benefit greatly from the Feral's Wicked Claws PvP talent.
Beyond Ferals, Retribution Paladins, and Death Knights though - I believe both Warriors and even Rogues will continue to excel into season 2. While Arms Warriors aren’t really receiving any notable changes, their toolkit alone has warranted them a place in most people's S or even S+ tier throughout Season 1 of Shadowlands and there’s no reason for that to change in Season 2 as most of their toolkit remains the same.
As for Rogues - while Subtlety is likely to fall off given the nerfs that Fire Mages have seen, Assassination is looking to be a strong contender as the go-to Rogue spec for top players. The addition of a Disarm in the form of the PvP talent
Démantèlement
to all Rogue specs and the incredibly powerful new PvP talent exclusive to Assaassination,
Hémotoxine
, is likely to make the spec quite formidable in a variety of matchups including both melee cleaves and melee caster compositions.
Ranged DPS
Moving into the ranged DPS specializations - unlike the melee which have seen a handful of specs receive some incredible changes, we aren’t really getting any brand new S-tier ranged specs. Instead, what we’re getting are some very critical nerfs to the ranged overlords of Season 1 - Fire Mages. Not only are both
Cascade infernale
and
Petit bois
seeing nerfs which will impact Fire’s damage output, but the removal of
Cleptomanie
as a PvP talent for non-Arcane Mages will also impact the performance of Fire Mages in Season 2.
Looking past the Fire Mage nerfs, Beast Mastery Hunters will likely continue to dominate and the handful of buffs that Frost Mages and Destruction Warlocks are receiving will definitely give them a chance to succeed too. In addition, both Elemental Shamans and Shadow Priests aren’t seeing any notable buffs or nerfs that will impact their place in the meta which probably means we’ll continue to see both appear in a handful of top compositions.
Ultimately I believe the Fire Mage nerfs will open up the meta quite nicely and make a much more vast set of compositions viable for all ranged specs as opposed to the Fire Mage and Holy Paladin meta we were stuck with for most of Season 1.
Healer
Last up, I’ll be covering where I believe the healer meta will be moving. For those of you who have been keeping up with the changes over on the PTR, you won’t be surprised to hear that Mistweaver Monks are shaping up to be one of - if not the best healer around. The addition of both
Dématérialisation
and
Éminence
as brand new PvP talents for the specialization seem to completely iron out the spec's biggest flaws throughout the start of Shadowlands.
Past that, the loss of
Cleptomanie
to Fire/Frost Mages will almost certainly see a surge in Restoration Druid success as they’ll no longer be soft-countered by a single spell in the majority of matchups and while there aren’t really too many other super meaningful changes happening to Restoration Druids - the fact that I believe this nerf to Mages will surely see Resto Druids flourish is just a testament to the power of
Cleptomanie
.
We’ve then got Discipline Priests, Holy Priests, and Restoration Shamans which are all receiving a handful of minor tweaks and improvements that probably won’t see them outperform the aforementioned healers but will certainly keep them in the meta, most notably with Resto Shamans continuing to do well in melee cleaves while Priests will still enjoy being paired with Feral Druids and Hunters.
Finally we have Holy Paladins - the monarchs of Season 1 that reigned supreme and dominated the tournament scene. This specialization is actually seeing the largest number of negative changes, including damage nerfs across the board and a redesign to
Imprégnation de lumière
. Putting these changes together with the lack of a tweak to Holy Paladin mana regeneration and the nerf to their partner in crime, Fire Mages, will almost certainly leave the specialization underperforming when compared to how well they did throughout the start of Shadowlands.
Final Thoughts
While both melee and healers are looking to have a standout set of specs that I expect to see outperform the rest, the ranged specs seem to be balanced much closer to each other. If I were to predict exactly what that means - I fully expect to see the 3s meta split down the middle, with a ton of different melee comps working exceptionally well alongside an extremely varied melee/caster/healer meta where almost every ranged DPS spec will have something they can do well with.
Plenty of old favourites like
FLS
(Feral Druid/Warlock/Restoration Shaman),
FPS
(Feral Druid/Retribution Paladin/Restoration Shaman), and
Kittycleave
(Feral Druid/Arms Warrior/Holy Paladin) to name a few have the chance to perform very well again and even compositions like
RLS
(Rogue/Warlock/Restoration Shaman) might make a return given the newly invigorated version of Assassination Rogues we’re about to bear witness to. All in all, I definitely see Season 2 of Shadowlands PvP shaping up to have one of the most wide open metas we’ve ever seen. That is of course only if
Junglecleave
(Feral Druid/Hunter/Healer) doesn’t end up crushing every composition out there.
