Nature Resistance in Classic Phase 5 and the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj

One of the most important things coming with Classic Phase 5 and the Ahn'Qiraj raids is the emphasis on Nature Resistance, where it comes from, and what bosses it's useful for. Vanilla veterans will remember stacking it throughout their raids, but similar to Fire Resistance, the changes in Classic WoW mean that exactly how important it will be can vary greatly depending on the guild in question.
Who Needs Nature Resistance in AQ?
This may be a more complicated question than it sounds. Vanilla veterans may remember outfitting a large portion of their raid (the closest 15 players) with upwards 200 Nature Resistance in order to survive
Eclair de poison
once
Princess Huhuran
hits 30% health. However, with the power creep present in Classic WoW, the encounter is projected to be far easier than it was back in its original form, leading many guilds to plan on bursting the boss down with
Témérité
and other cooldowns in order to forgo nature resistance gear whatsoever. Of course, just because some guilds are capable of putting out enough burst damage to nuke the boss down from 30% doesn't mean that
all
of them will be able to, so each group will need to evaluate this requirement for themselves. One guideline which has gone around is that if your guild is comfortable killing Flamegore in around 30 seconds, you should be able to burst down Princess the same way, but it's a rough comparison at best.
If you're not one of those guilds intending on burning
Princess Huhuran
down to the ground before she can do enough damage with
Eclair de poison
to kill your raid, you will want to stack nature resistance on the 15 players expected to be closest to the boss, in order to successfully mitigate that damage. Tanks will also want a modicum of Nature Resistance, but as the primary tank damage is physical, it shouldn't be prioritized at the expense of other stats.
Other bosses such as the
Bug Trio
,
Viscidus
, and even
C'Thun
can also benefit from Nature Resistance, but the consumables
Potion de protection contre la Nature supérieure
,
Elixir de résistance au poison
, and
Forme de pierre
greatly reduce the need for any extra resistance gearing that could instead go toward better throughput, provided your group is willing to spend the money on using them.
A common private server strategy for
pulling C'thun
involves a Hunter wearing a high amount of Nature Resistance gear for the sole purpose of eating the first
Rayon accablant
. Because it can easily chain between and annihilate a raid moving in together on the pull, a high Nature Resistance Hunter with
Aspect de la nature
can run in first, taking the beam off to a corner where it's unable to bounce to the rest of the raid. This strategy will likely be less common in Classic though, because Hunters are not able to change gear while under the effects of
Feindre la mort
, making it a questionable investment when it's also possible to simply heal someone through the damage without investing in extra resistance gear.
The perils of walking into C'Thun's lair unprepared are great!
Where to Get Nature Resistance?
A good deal of Nature Resistance gear actually comes from Ahn'Qiraj itself, as well as the
Cercle cénarien
reputation crafted items widely-accessible in Phase 5, with the idea that players would slowly progress throughout the content. That said, a great deal of Resistance gear is already available from other sources that were largely overlooked at the time. We've collected all those pieces in our
WoW Classic Guide to Nature Resist Gear
, and while most guilds prepping for Ahn'Qiraj are already well aware of what's available and how to get it, it's a great reference for anyone stepping back into Classic WoW for Phase 5.
