Microsoft Head of Gaming Phil Spencer said the company intends to recognize and support Raven Software's union after Activision merges into the company. The Game Workers Alliance was formally
voted on earlier this week
with 19 for and 3 against, and while they represent only a fraction of the total workers at Activision Blizzard, their formation is a massive step forward for proponents of collective workers' rights.
As
reported by Kotaku
, who verified the quote from a video recording of the remote all-hands meeting, Spencer stressed that Microsoft doesn't have a current relationship with the newly founded Game Workers Alliance or the much larger Communication Workers of America that it's affiliated with, but would absolutely recognize the union once the Activision deal closes.

“Linda Norman and I have been spending a lot of time educating myself on unions.” Spencer said. “We absolutely support employees’ right to organize and form unions.”
“Once the deal closes, we would absolutely support employees’ organization that’s in place,” he said. “We think it is a right of employees and something that can be a part of a relationship between a company and people who work at the company.”
While this had been stated previously in less emphatic terms, with Microsoft Corporate Vice President and General Counsel Lisa Tanzi telling the Washington Post in March that
Microsoft would not stand in the way of unionization
, this further confirms that intent and should be great news for the budding union at Raven Software.
