Massive Ban Wave on Classic WoW - Possibly Terrain Exploitation Related

Today in Classic WoW, many players through the game have received a ban, with the ban reasons marked as item/gold exploitation.
It is currently unknown what caused such a ban wave, which seems to have caught thousands of players, but a blue post on the Customer Support forums is pointing out that when usually a ban wave of this magnitude happens, it is because some sort of terrain exploitation has been detected and used en masse by players.
Several Classic players currently suspect that this could be due to players being summoned on top of the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj,
but as of the time of this post, this is merely speculation and not confirmed to be the trigger for the ban wave

If you were caught by this ban wave and think this was done in error, you are able to submit a ticket to appeal the ban. There are already reports of players who managed to get unbanned after appealing,

Entire raid groups being banned is unheard of, especially when its multiple guilds and multiple groups. I feel as though this was a massive error.
While I am not able to provide much in the way of details when large groups of guild members are all penalized around the same time it is because they have been found to have exploited the game terrain, such as going through walls, going underground, or otherwise circumventing the normal mechanics of the game.
The email should have provided the penalty duration, the display in the client is very much off, which our teams are aware of.
