Yet another full class clear of Molten Core has been achieved, this time from an unlikely composition: 40 Mages on the EU-PvP server Venoxis managed to fully clear Molten Core in 3 and a half hours. The run was organized and led by Tuashi of <Pyrolyse>, with about two months of meticulous planning going into this endeavor. The raid was also recorded on
WarcraftLogs
, and streamed from the perspective of ExehnTV. The full VOD can be viewed below, although they also uploaded a
highlight video on Youtube
.
The run begins about 14 minutes into the VOD.
As the raid composition would suggest, they did not have any traditional means to fulfill the tank or healer roles - however, this was remedied with some creative strategic adjustments. I was able to inquire with Tuashi to get a better understanding of what each Mage's role was in this specific raid environment.
"We had basically four different talent specs: 4
Deep Frost Elemental mages
with defensive gear and
Flacon des Titans
. We tried to have these mages get the first crit on each pull. Then we had a couple of deep fire elemental mages with full damage gear that tried to stack the
Enflammer
and keep it up. We rounded that out with a few
deep frost mages
in full damage gear that skipped the aggro reduce talent and tried to get second in aggro, so if the tank goes into
Bloc de glace
, the boss runs towards them instead of the rest of the raid. About half the raid just had a
standard Arcane-Frost PvE build
."
To complement these roles, they utilized
Graine d'épineux
and
Leurre ouvragé
to mitigate incoming damage by pulling aggro off of any Mages in the raid. In addition, they had also made use of the
Rayon réducteur gnome
to reduce a boss's attack power as well as the
Sac de billes
to dramatically reduce a boss's hit chance (which can only be obtained from the quest
L'échange de poussière d'or
in
Forêt d'Elwynn
).
In regards to consumable usage, the designated Mage tanks had also made use of standard defensive consumables and potions, such as
Potion de Bouclier de pierre supérieure
, while all damage-dealing Mages would use standard offensive consumables.
Potion d'invulnérabilité limitée
was essential, as this potion would allow them to output high damage and drop aggro to 'ping pong' mobs and bosses between other Mages in the raid.
Another unique challenge that this raid faced was that Mages do not have a resurrection ability, further emphasizing survivability and the use of defensive options. For those that were unable to be resurrected with
Défibrillateurs gobelins XL
, they would have to run back. This resulted in a decent amount of backtracking, as the entire raid would have to meet up with them to ensure that they would make it safely past any Lava Surger or Ancient Core Hound respawns.
Due to Mages being unable to remove any debuffs other than curses, the Ancient Core Hounds posed a problem with their long duration magic debuffs. Fortunately, Mages can clear these debuffs with the use of
Bloc de glace
and
Potion de restauration
s. Alternatively, if the raid damage was high enough, they could simply kill the Ancient Core Hounds before they are able to apply any debuffs.
Incidentally, the greatest threat the raid faced were the trash mobs, as a high number of deaths occurred between bosses despite proper planning and coordination. Fortunately their creative strategies allowed them to mitigate deaths on most of the bosses, although
Shazzrah
was expectedly troublesome due to
Amortissement de la magie
. Tuashi explained how they approached a few of the bosses and revised their strategies below.
"On
Baron Geddon
, we had two mages with max fire res gear. Walt ended up tanking
Baron Geddon
throughout the entire fight without taking almost any damage!"
"The bosses I was most worried about were
Garr
and
Chambellan Executus
. On
Garr
we tried putting down every
Graine d'épineux
and
Leurre ouvragé
we had and kill the adds from a safe distance. Unfortunately, we didn't know that
Blizzard
takes up an invisible debuff slot and this tactic didn't work. On the second attempt we just zerged him down, doused the rune, and wiped to the adds. On
Chambellan Executus
we used every possible protection potion and bombed them. The adds all do AoE-damage as well, so it was a matter of who dies first to the other group's AOE."
"
Ragnaros
was trivial. A while back, I could test that
Ragnaros
keeps hitting on an invulnerable tank when no one else is in melee range. So we just had three mages rotate using
Bloc de glace
while standing next to him."

Despite the challenges and difficulties they had encountered, they overcame them in a fairly reasonable time. Now that Molten Core has been conquered with only Mages,
Druids
,
Paladins
, and
Shamans
, this begs the question - which class will conquer Molten Core next?
