A group of Blizzard Albany quality assurance workers have announced the formation of a new union and are now asking Activision Blizzard to voluntarily recognize Game Workers Alliance Albany.
Update:
Games Industry has reported
the number of employees seeking unionization to be 20, along with a short response from an ATVI spokesperson.
GamesIndustry.biz
"We deeply respect the rights of all employees under the law to make their own decisions about whether or not to join a union," they said.
"We believe that a direct relationship between the company and its employees is the most productive relationship. The company will be publicly and formally providing a response to the petition to the NLRB."
Blizzard Albany
is the new name for former Activision studio Vicarious Visions, most recently known their work on Destiny 2, as well as the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater remasters. The studio was officially
merged into Blizzard Entertainment
last year, where it has been primarily working on the development of Diablo 2: Resurrected and Diablo IV.
Organized under the Communication Workers of America, the budding union has asked Activision Blizzard to voluntarily recognize their formation, though it may not happen quite that easily. Unlike
Raven Software
before them, Blizzard Albany is not a standalone studio and instead part of the greater overall Blizzard Entertainment, so we can expect that Activision Blizzard will again push back against the idea with the justification that it only encompasses a small subset of employees rather than the much greater overall workforce of Blizzard Entertainment.
The idea behind voluntary recognition is to avoid a lengthy voting process with National Labor Relations Board when a majority of employees have already shown
evidence in support of unionization
, but the company is under no legal obligation to do so. Even if enough intent is shown, however, the reality is that companies and union organizers will often
clash over legalities
, resulting the need for mediation by the NLRB anyway. In the case of Raven Software, that
vote was held four months later
, finally passing 19-3 to become the second North American video game developers union.
