Alpha Project Finds AddOn that Prompted the Auction House

is an interesting little hobby started and maintained by Grender. It is a emulator for the earliest version of
World of Warcraft
that Grender and their compatriots can build, along with an interest in archiving and preserving alpha and beta WoW resources. At this point they have both a 0.5.3 server and a 1.12 server.
They discovered something quite interesting, and Grender posted about it on
We were going through old beta screenshots in our Alpha Project Discord and noticed that some of them showed what appeared to be like a primitive Auction House.
The primitive Auction House, named \"Autotrade\"
At first we thought that this was indeed official, but after a while we concluded that Autotrade was a player created AddOn that was extremely popular during beta days. It was so popular, that it's even mentioned in John Staat's The WoW Diary.
As you can read, turns out that this AddOn was most likely what convinced Blizzard to implement the Auction House as we know it today.

Grender continues that, they absolutely needed to find that AddOn - because of course they did! Some digging and networking produced results. They discovered that Autotrade was part of a UI AddOn Pack called Cosmos (formerly EScript) and finally they were able to track down not only Autotrade, but the whole Cosmos package. Their hard work paid off, producing
twenty-seven versions of the AddOn Package
It's really exciting when online archeologists make finds like this. They are able to preserve the history of World of Warcraft, with their emulator as a playable museum.
We are really happy to have found this historical AddOn, game preservation is important (that's what Alpha Project is about at the end of the day).
