A Look Back at the Last Runes to Be Found in Each Phase - Season of Discovery

While there aren't very many Runes to discover in Phase 5, players have been hard at work finding the newest Epic Class Items, with the Warrior's
Suzerain, défenseur des Vols draconiques
being the only one left to be documented. With this in mind, we decided to go back and look at the final Rune to be found in each Phase of Season of Discovery.
Epic Class Gear Questlines in Season of Discovery Phase 5
Each Phase of Season of Discovery has opened with a mad dash for players to find all available Runes. While most were found very quickly, some took far longer, all the way up to a week in one case. Now that we have reached level 60 and crossed blades with iconic Classic bosses, we thought it would be a good time to take a look back at the last Runes to be discovered in each Phase.
Phase 1 - Metamorphosis
At the very start of Season of Discovery,
Métamorphose
was one of the most hyped Runes. Warlocks would get the ability to tank, complete with a taunt ability and some massive modifiers to their threat and armor. A lot of players rolled their Warlocks on day 1, expecting to get
Métamorphose
early enough to tank their way to level 25.
The search began. Clues were all over the place but nothing led to anything. Players, primarily from the Classic Warlock Discord, checked everywhere. Every zone they could get to was checked and checked again. The dedicated Discord thread broke after receiving too many posts, and an entire channel had to be created. Players were casting
Siphon d'âme
on every enemy they could find. A
spreadsheet
was made, documenting everything players had tried.
The only lead they had was the
Branche d’Altek
and the
Orbe de Des
. These two items were both new additions that stated they were once "half of a great weapon". Unfortunately, once both items were obtained, nothing happened. Warcraft lore was considered, maybe they had to follow in the footsteps of another Warlock. Memes began flowing, and with them came fake screenshots and outright lies.

In the end,
Métamorphose
was bugged. Players had the right idea. The
Branche d’Altek
and
Orbe de Des
were important parts of the quest, but they were step 2. Part 1,
L'Orbe de Soran'ruk
was bugged. Players could not obtain the quest required to start the chain. The search was doomed, to begin with. An undocumented hotfix rolled out and players were able to start the quest, which immediately asked them to gather items from inside
Profondeurs de Brassenoire
. This was quickly hotfixed, allowing players to kill the mobs just outside the raid.
Phase 1 started on the 30th of November, and
Métamorphose
was found on the 3rd of December.

Phase 2 - Sheath of Light
The final discovery for Phase 2 doesn't come with a dramatic story. There are no pin board covered theories. The last Rune discovered was
Fourreau de lumière
. Paladins and Shamans were the last classes with Runes left to find, likely because their populations are typically lower than non-faction-locked alternatives.
Fourreau de lumière
required players to already have the
Tempête divine
Rune, after which they could loot the
Marteau brisé
in
Désolace
. Next up was killing
Invocateur de la Lame ardente
s. These mobs are level 38-39, meaning you'd have to almost reach the new level cap of 40 for them to be yellow. Following the quest chain tasked players with finding the owner of the
Marteau brisé
, Aeonas the Quiet.
With this being Season of Discovery, you aren't told exactly where to find him. Instead,
Katherine la Pure
will tell you that he "had a passion for the sea, and was an accomplished angler". Where would you find a fisherman if not the
Les Paluns (Wetlands)
? Speaking to
Harold Riggs
let players know that Aeonas usually sails into town on a skiff from the southwest, along the coast.
There's only one location along that coast, Newman's Landing. This dilapidated shack found between maps has historically served no purpose to players, but there has been a lot of speculation and rumors about its purpose. For Season of Discovery, that is where Aeonas has been in self-imposed exile. Once there, Paladins are ambushed by
Assassin de la Croisade écarlate
s and will have to finish up this quest chain by finding and freeing
Aeonas le Justifié
in the
Monastère écarlate
Cathedral, after killing
Grand Inquisiteur Whitemane
.
Phase 2 started on the 8th of February, and
Fourreau de lumière
was found on the 10th of February.

Phase 3 - Light's Grace
This Rune took an entire week before it was found. In a somewhat unique situation,
Grâce de la Lumière
was easily accessible, and only took so long because no one wanted to use it.
Grâce de la Lumière
was simply worse than any of the other options available. At the time, this Rune shared a slot with
Fanatisme
, and a slightly faster
Lumière sacrée
cast couldn't even come close to 18% Critical Chance on all of your spells, and a heal-over-time component as a bonus.
Getting this Rune didn't require people to reach the new level cap, but it did require some clever thinking. Early on, players spotted a crashed flying machine on one of the pillars in
Feralas
, alongside
Frix Xizzix
. Normally these pillars are inaccessible—except for the one used in the Phase 2 Crafting quest chain. Eventually, someone figured out that if you angered the guards on the accessible platform, they would knock you off the platform. Position this just right, and you could get knocked onto the platform together with
Frix Xizzix
. From there, all you need to do is heal him up, progress his dialogue, and visit his brother,
Rix Xizzix
in Booty Bay.
This process wasn't any more complicated than any of the Phases of other Runes, and in fact, was significantly simpler than a lot of them. Even once it was found, no one was in a hurry to go and grab it.
Phase 3 started on the 4th of April, and
Grâce de la Lumière
was found on the 11th of April.

Phase 4 - Shockwave
Despite being found relatively quickly,
Onde de choc
had a lot of people believing it was broken. This was primarily because players could start the first quest,
Le robot de la plage
at level 55, but could not grab the final part until level 58, with no indication that it even existed. This issue was compounded by having to swim through the fatigue border and over to an island far off the coast of
Tanaris
.
A few steps in, players would hand in
on the same island again. If you weren't level 58, this is where your momentum stopped. You'd receive no indication on how to proceed or finish the Rune, and would simply leave the island empty-handed. Most players wouldn't bother making the long and perilous swim back a few levels later just to see if anything had changed.
On the 16th of July,
Faille sur demande
was made obtainable at level 55, meaning players could complete the entire quest chain in one go.
Phase 4 started on the 11th of July, and
Onde de choc
was found on July 13th.
