40 Paladins Clear Molten Core on the Classic Test Realm

We have another full class clear of Molten Core, as 40 Paladins have managed to bubble their way through the Classic raid in just over 2 hours without a single wipe! The run was organized, led, and main tanked by Wowhead's own
Protection Paladin
and
Balance Druid
guide author Askalon whose
Youtube channel
contains several Protection Paladin tanking highlights.
Perhaps even more interesting than the group composition is that this run took place on the Public Test Realm, rather than a regular server. While there's no inherent distinction between realms, such as a gear vendor or impactful buff, it did allow the group to form much easier, pulling players from many different realms without worrying about server restrictions or raid lockouts. The result was a very well geared raid, sporting one

Whether this is a true "Classic World First" or if the run happening on the PTR invalidates the achievement is a matter of personal opinion, as there's no official tracking of such things, but it was certainly a creative way of getting around the heavy restrictions imposed in Classic WoW, especially with how underrepresented Paladins are in the Tanking and DPS roles. A group of Russian Paladins also
previously attempted
the run over three days starting on May 26th, making it all the way to Ragnaros, but were unfortunately unable to get past the submerge phase.

Like other full class runs, the inability to cover every raid mechanic makes for some unique challenges and coming up with creative ways to overcome them. For Paladins this is best represented in their inability to taunt, requiring much more precise threat coordination than other tanks. While main tanking the raid, Askalon made a custom Weak Aura to track each tanks threat, ensuring each tank cast the same number of casts to normalize the threat between them and allow for easier aggro management.

threat scales with the number of players it buffs, only limited by the number of players with the same class, starting with a base 60 threat multiplied by

for a total of 114 threat per person buffed. Because Greater Blessings buff all members of the target class, a raid with 40 Paladins translates to a whopping
4,560 threat per cast
! While split per mob, that's enough to hold aggro on trash packs without even bothering with
Consécration
and in some cases even proved to generate
too much
threat, as it could easily result in the wrong person pulling adds on Garr, Sulfron, Majordomo Executus, or Ragnaros. This extreme bonus on threat also allowed for better survivability, as tanks could gear for avoidance and mitigation more so than usual.
Threat aside, many bosses also posed greater difficulty than normal.

were used extensively to provide decursing on Lucifron, Gehennas, and Shazzrah, with

proving one of the most difficult challenges of the run. Majordomo Executus also required a unique strategy, using 4 groups of 5 Paladins rotating

on each mob to prevent them from healing. Despite these challenges however, the combined team of Protection, Retribution, and Holy Paladins managed to make their way through the raid in a brisk 2 hours without a single wipe, though there was a ritual suicide with
Intervention divine
at the end of the night.
