Survival of the not mage?

Ok so my first serious toon was a BE Warlock and one of my mates started a Mage at the same time. We are both lvl 70 now and he massively out dps's me every time. So I decided to start a Mage. And a BE one cause I know all the quests in that area well. But my problem is this... Every time I get targeted by 2 or more enemies I die. Usually right after killing one of them. Any advice on how to avoid death would be most appriciated.

I'm assuming
this
is you.
Make sure to keep
Frost Armor
up whenever facing enemies who deal physical (white) damage and
Dampen Magic
up when facing spellcasters (unless you have a healer).
Polymorph
the second mob in a pull whenever possible (pull with polymorph, works wonders) and recast it before it wears off if you need more time.
Range is your friend. Use
Frost Nova
and move away, then use constant
Frostbolts
to slow your enemy down before it can touch you.
Finish off low-health enemies with a quick
Fire Blast
.
Don't use arcane missiles until you have 5/5 Arcane Stability (so make that a priority). Once you have those points, use Arcane Missles over Frostbolt or Fireball every time. Actually if you have the money I'd respec and remove the points in Arcane Fortitude. The damage reduction you get from that talent is worthless without the benefits of full Arcane Stability.

In my personal opinion, I think Arcane will be much harder to level as than Frost.

That's part of the reason I wanted to do arcane. Firstly because it's more of a challenge and secondly cause Arcane Missiles looks awsome. And my sincere thanks for the advice both of you.

Let me rephrase my previous post. Frost will be much easier to level than Arcane, because your main nuke is a 5 second channeled spell until level 64. Stick with what you like and have fun with, as that's the point of the game, but you may have more fun as Frost if you haven't tried it yet. As a note, once I hit level 64 and got Arcane Blast, I leveled my way up to 79 with Arcane, and it was much more fun than I remember.
I just think it'll be much harder before level 64. Frustratingly hard. As in "Every time I get targeted by 2 or more enemies I die.".
Although if you're really committed to staying Arcane, I can only offer the advice that's already been given.
Pull with Polymorph.
Also, just because you're arcane doesn't mean you can't use Frost Nova.

Usually the problem is three or more enemies until you get Ice Barrier as a frost talent at 40. Two enemies are rarely a problem because you can usually polymorph one of them.
If you're not going to go with frost and stay arcane, all I can say is good luck! You're going to be leveling the hardest way possible, with the exception of leveling a totally broken build.

My Mage is 78 as of this writing. I was Frost AoE grinding up until 58 when I switched to a Frost single-target spec. At 64, with Arcane Blast, I switched Arcane. Let me tell you, Arcane's issues with mana in the past are gone after 64. It's ridiculous.
For multiple pulls, I open with my standard rotation and ignore the add until it gets close. Nova it in place, sidestep 3 paces, nuke down my target, Poly the add and begin a new rotation on the other. Don't forget about your other tools for survivability, though; Slow is a great kiting tool, as is Cone of Cold. Counterspell can force that caster closer to you.
Really, it's about using your abilities so you don't get ripped apart like the napkin you are.

Thanks for the advice guys. I might give frost a shot and see if I enjoy it.

This is weird. Leveling my belf mage to 10, I never died even with 2 people on me. I felt like I had much better survivability on this than my others.
Sure, all trash gear, no heirlooms or bought gear I assume? 2 aren't really a serious problem, especially if you have gear. More than two can be extremely frustrating. There were quite a few escort missions and "kill the captain at the top of the tower' missions I had to skip until I hit 40 because of the 3+ ambush problems.

Fire works fine too, if you want something a bit more interesting than spamming Frostbolt.

At the higher levels (51+), it isn't just about Frostbolt. That's still the main nuke (as I assume Fireball is), but there's Deep Freeze and Brain Freeze procs as well. Plus having a pet is a lot of fun (though I wish I had more control over it). And of course any time you're dealing with 3+ mobs, break out the Blizzard.

The problem is the permanent pet for Frost was implemented in the laziest way possible. It is a real shame.

honestly i don't think his problem is what spec he's playing. yes having icebarrier will help reduce the dmg he's taking. but if he's having issues with 2 mobs...he's most likely just standing there and tanking them while trying to cast on them. you need to move around as a mage...your now playing the squishest class in the game. learn to use your slowing effects, frost nova, blink, whatever will keep you alive you need to learn to use it. warlocks have pets and you can stand there and cast while it tanks for you or reduces the dmg you take. you get spells that help get your hp back like healthdrain, siphon life, and health stones. but as a mage, you don't get any of that. you get to hit much harder at the cost of being squisher.
