Is there a spec to suit my needs?

Hi everyone,
I've been mucking around with healing for the very first time, albeit in very early dungeons, with my Shaman and have decided I love healing and want to re-roll and start afresh with a Druid or Priest and am looking for a few tips to tighten up my knowledge of this class and more specifically to see if there is a particular build that suits the way I will be levelling.
Perhaps the biggest factor in the equation, and the things that stops me from merely following one of the dedicated guides, is that my entire priest career from 1-80 will be done levelling alongside my best mate's Prot' Paladin.
Obviously with the new LFG system me and my friend will have no trouble getting a run in any dungeon as we go but the thing that I'm slightly unsure about is how to handle normal levelling (ie questing). As a prot pally my mate will be able to round up large groups of mobs and hold them steady for as long as needs be, and it would fall on me to essentially kill off each mob whilst he holds aggro...
Is there a priest spec/build that is well suited to putting down groups of mobs quickly and efficiently if getting aggro won't really be a problem? It's this scenario that I will admit is making me consider a Druid as my new character, as the option of questing in cat form and ripping through mobs that my tank pal is holding seems, on the face of it, a more viable way to go.
Any thoughts or feedback would be fantastic. Thank you!

Bear in mind AoE is incredibly weak and/or innefficient for all classes under 40. Including protadins.
Cats have no AoE before 70 I believe. Us priests get Holy Nova, both healing and damaging simultaneously, for no threat. Wave goodbye to mana though.

Thanks for the input so far guys.
In reply to the comments regarding AoE skills - how about if I kept my focus on single targets ; wether that be killing each mob one at a time (when aggro'd around the tank)?
For instance, if I was to take the Druid instead then in cat form I would essentially make my way across the 'queue' of mobs and take them each out as quick as possible.
