Ganking - What's the point?

First, let me say that I think of ganking as killing someone you know has no chance to successfully fight back. Maybe they're a good many levels lower than you or they just got out of a tough fight or some other circumstance. But when you start the fight, you're almost guaranteed to be victorious (and if you don't win, it's usually to someone else showing up to help the opponent or your computer freezes up for a second).
My question is, why do it in the first place? I honestly don't see the fun in it. To me, it seems like 6th graders going around picking on 1st graders, or soldiers firing upon enemy combatants that are wounded and can't defend themselves. And I realize this is just a game, but I think that's what makes ganking even more confusing to me; nobody (that I know) enjoys dying, especially in a circumstance where they've no real chance to fight back. If I enjoy this game, wouldn't I want others to enjoy it as well? Maybe it's the way my parents raised me or the values the military tried to teach/brainwash me with when I was in, but I honestly just don't understand the point to this action. And no, I'm not trying to start any sort of flame war (those are just as pointless to me) or anything like that; this is pure curiosity on my part. Thanks.

I play on Horde side and I just don't like Alliance. When I see a player from the opposite faction, I attack. I don't care what level you are, lvl 2, lvl 25 or lvl 80... I'll still attack you. It's just my nature to kill, as my char is Orc.
For the Horde!
See, I find this funny, because I know a lot of PvPers who say this, and at the same time they think RPing is stupid... when by saying "my char is an Orc" that's effectively what they're doing.
This sort of mentality is also known as "Red is Dead". However for most people (not specifically you) it's just a really pathetic excuse to justify ganking.

I usally leave the opposite faction alone (i play both), however i might jump in and help them if they are in trouble.
Only thing is when alliance attacks Barrens and horde attacks Westfall, for an example. then i defend my faction against the other. but not really ganking. i killed a lvl 50-ish hunter attacking the crossroads. after the hunter ressed, the hunter did not continue the attack, and i "escorted" her to the border to a contested zone. and thats about it :)

When i do gank, rare, its usually with the knowledge that its upsetting a real person a whole lot and is in a small way a pay it forward from when i was a lowbie and got ganked my self... i guess its like hazing or any other rite of passage. All cultures have them even virtual ones.

Personally, i like spontaneous outdoor pvp. I might be guilty of ganking, but i dont attack lowbies, people who aint on full health occupied fighting a mob, or people who are (from a quick glance) much less geared than me.
Pretty much everyone else (and ret paladins regardless of level, alliance ret paladins gets to feel my frustration of when horde ret paladins have ninjaneeded my tanking upgrades) is my target.
I like spontaneous pvp to the point that i actually seek it out, by running around (alone) in alliance capitals (when i do that, even flagged lowbies, and npcs, questgivers get ganked ).

This is why I don't and will never play on a PvP server (I've tried it, didn't work). There's something in my brain that just doesn't get ganking. I don't understand it and I never will, so I just get frustrated and log to a different character or off WoW altogether and go do something else.
If I'm a low level running around questing on a PvP server and a high level runs past and decides to 1-shot me, ok, part of the game. But them then sit there and camp me several times... I just don't get it. They get nothing out of it except the thought that, "Hey, I'm *!@#ing off some random person and making their day suck, LOL!" and that thought process just doesn't compute with me. Maybe I'm just not wired for online gaming.
Or when someone your level picks a fight with you a couple times, loses, and then clearly hops on a high level char of theirs and just crushes and camps you. If you can't stand to lose, then don't pick a fight.
So yeah, I'd love to play on a competitive PvP server, but I'd have to transfer in at 80, and I just feel kind of cheap going that route and won't do it. So meh, PvP servers are just off limits to me. I can't understand your need to e-peen. PvE grouping I can ignore someone. Can't do that very well in PvP :P

Players who gank, and then sit and camp for ages until you ressurect are just players who are terrible at PVP. They find pleasure in killing lowbies.. In my perspective - they are just noobs.

The whole "do PvE instead" argument is ridiculous, at least in my mind. I like the idea of PvP in general (as in people don't gank, but keep fights somewhat fair) . It fits the setting. People shouldn't have to switch servers because of people that feel like being, in a sense, bullies. Not to mention, in my experience, PvE servers aren't much better. High level players may be unable to attack lowbies, but they're still able to go after NPC's, which they do just to grief other players. So in the end, it's a catch-22 situation.
As to someone saying ganking doesn't have to be justified, say that next time you get sucker-punched, because that's what ganking, in a sense, boils down to. At most, in an RP environment, I'd say it makes sense to kill a low level toon for the opposing faction. In my eyes, it would be like taking out an inexperienced troop of an opposing army. But outside of that situation, all you're doing is saying "look what a jerk I can be".

For a long time, I considered ganking as you do - that it shouldn't happen, even on a PvP server. However, I've since accepted that it's part and parcel of the PvP server experience. Horde kills Alliance, Alliance kills Horde - and level doesn't matter; you shoot first and ask questions later.
I play on a PvE server for this reason. I enjoy PvP - as long as I can take it when I want it, and avoid it when I'm not in the mood.
