When to use BB and when to use HS:
Blood Boil:
Assuming diseases are up on the targets (only the 1st disease adds extra damage, the 2nd does nothing), also assuming that you´re specced into bloody strikes for both of these comparisons.
Base damage is 275-315
Attack power coefficient is 0.095
Giving you the formula: No. of targets x x 1.3 (bloody strikes)
Heart strike:
x2 = (AWD x 1.015)x2 + 1536
Assuming 4000 AP using a 200dps 3.6 speed weapon (say,
Jawbone
with 4 enemies within your range (after you've spread your diseases with pestilence).
Blood boil:
(295 + 380) x 4 x1.3 = Totally
3510
damage dealt
Heart strike:
x2 + 1518 =>
2706 + 1518 = 4224
Then we need to factor in enemies armor: (assuming 30%)
4224 x 0.7 =
2957
With 4 targets BB deals ~3.5k damage as opposed to ~3k from HS
With three targets HS deals ~3k and BB deals ~2.6k.
Assuming these variables it appears as if the breaking point to when to use BB and when to use HS appears to be: At 1-3 targets, use HS. At 4+ targets, use BB.
Do note that:
The possibility of crits, but since HS and BB share the same crit modifier,
MoM
, crits are excluded in these calculations for simplicity reasons.
The lower hit chance of BB (being a spell) and the possibility that HS is dodged ==> remember your Hit and Expertise rating.
The amount of ArP you currently have also affects these values (and BG).
The Availability of +10% AP buff to your group/raid
The life-time of your targets, if they're too squishy for you to throw up diseases, just burn disease-less BB's/HS's
BB also has a lower crit chance than HS (with BB being a spell, not benefitting from agility etc.)
Some mobs has more/less armor than others, 30% is a poor estimate.
I've excluded the influence of BV, making HS hit slightly harder
Concluding, the rough sketch I offered suggests that BB gets better than HS at 4+ targets. However due to the number of variables affecting the calculations the only real way to distinguish when it's better to use BB vs HS is through
testing
and
personal experience
.
From my personal experience:
During 5-mans: the pulls are oftenly too small to make the most of BB. I normally use IT/PS - Pest - HS away in the majority of the fights.
During raids: Some pulls does make using BB worth it, so I use BB alot more. However, in some cases I'm on AM duty so I tend to throw some HS's to get the buff going before I BB away.
P.S. Lynri I read you were looking for some experienced blood DK's? I've been blood for quite some time now *hint hint*
Edit: Sorry about the delayed calculations, been busy lately.

My calculations doesn't take percentual damage increasing modifiers into account (since it affects both HS and BB). For instance, Blood gorged, Blood presence, CoE (and Ebon plaguebringer) etc.
I've also based my calculations on 4k AP using Jawbone, I'm not surprised you've had bigger BB hits/crits :)
I wasn't aware that there was a rule of thumb for using BB, but I find there simply to be too many variables to take into account when deciding between HS and BB (like some of the ones I listed).
Making it s bit more complex than "if 4+ targets BB" I'm afraid :(

Don't know if this was mentioned before, but one thing to keep in mind with the hitcap.
Yes it is 8% (~263 Hit rating), but assuming you're in a 25-man, there's bound to be a couple spacegoats running around with
Heroic Presence
, so the hitcap is effectively 7% (~230 rating) since you get the free 1% from Draenei.

1. It's only group wide.
2. It's only for Alliance.

done right. No fail blood caked crap, or the other useless talents in the blood tree.

No useless talents? What do you make of RT and IRT then? Points better spent in IBP and VB/MoB.
It has been proved that BCB does higher damages than RPM for additional seconds of DRW.
1/2 Epidemic is well enough if you know how to manage a successful rotation.

You're basically leaving 2% more Strength to gain 10% damage on Icy Touch?
As of BB, I'd say it is a matter of taste: on the first hand take less damage, on the other hand better help your healer to keep up with your life.

Spell crit isn't too far behind melee crit unless you stack agility instead of crit rating (which you shouldn't). They made crit rating universal about halfway through TBC.
