Today, I was testing a DW spec and i went to Ebon Hold and what was not my surprise, I was gaining Mace skill on the training dummy.

you only get skill ups from special attacks (strikes, and for some reason even our spells like icy touch give weapon skill ups), not from autoattacks, when fighting training dummies.

This is good to know, does it work for unarmed? I am sure this would take a lot longer as most of the special skills require a melee weapon.
um, unarmed -may- work since i have gotten skillups from icy touch, which doesnt require a weapon. however, it will be slow, as the autoattacks wont provide skillups and our strikes cannot be used without a weapon equipped.
shame we cant use fist weapons eh?

Nice little trick, spam Death Strike - as long as it misses it doesn't consume the runes and you can spam it every GCD. Makes skilling up much, much faster...

OK, after reading this post, I went to Ebon Hold for the specific reason of trying to level my Mace/2h Mace skills. (I'm an 80, and just realized we can use them... And here I expected Blizz to give us every skill we would need.... lol) I COULD NOT GET THIS TRICK TO WORK. I had purchased the 2h mace from Argent Crusade revered Rep, equipped it, and started wailing away on the level 55 training dummy for a while. My guess, is since my mace skill was at 1, and the target was level 55, I was missing too much to gain the skill point, however, I seem to remember from leveling different toons, that I was able to Miss, or have them Dodge, and still receive a skill up from it... Help?

when attacking target dummies, you -only- gain skill ups from -special attacks-, in our case, that's blood strike / plague strike, and even icy touch.
Autoattacks will not raise your weapon skill on dummies.

I had read that part earlier in the post. the no skill from auto attacks. i was going through my rotation as if i was actually attacking a mob, and it wasn't working. SO, as an 80 DK, here's another solution for raising your skills. I took my brand new 2h Mace, and went to the old Ring of Blood (which I had obviously bypassed when leveling) I solo'ed the entire thing, and managed to raise my skill from 1-364 in the process. The Target Dummy didn't work for me, if it worked for you, awesome, if it doesn't, go find Durn in Nagrand, and wail away on him. lol.

another option, for alliance anyhow, is to kill rats in the deeprun tram, ironforge side. Critters still give skillups, and those rats respawn after about 5 seconds each.

Shadow vault - endlessly spawning mobs, with npcs there to "help". I skilled 2h maces to 385 there in about 15 mins.

Or you could just go bash on
Azaloth
as he is banished you will get skill points from auto attacks.
By putting yourself afk there for a while it's easy to reach max weapon skill...also the mobs there will not attack you because they are only lvl 68 or so.

Can also go to normal Violet Hold if you want to stay in Northrend, however you can't go AFk there.
