I always preferred Digimon and Monster Rancher to both Pokemon and Yu-gi-oh; anime and game wise, as they had the 'better' plots usually....well alright, maybe not Monster Rancher the first 4 games....still, give me a
Tiger
style monster over anything out of Pokemon, up to and including the Legendary pokemon.

I remember a game on Playstation where you would insert a CD of any kind into the Playstation and it would generate a monster. I used to rent out all kinds of obscure CD's from the local library to see what monster I could get.

Charizard and Raichu for life.
(and not because those are the only ones I can remember)

That was the Monster Rancher series.

The DS version seems almost too easy, just make a random scribble on the touch pad and you got yourself a random monster. The stupid part is that you can keep on attempting several times, with no fixed code or some sort. That's true for any of the games; you always had a choice to just save the data of the created monster without forming it; and the GBA games had you put in random words to generate monsters.

Now that you guys mention it (mention pokémon in general), Pokemon Black and White are gonna be released in the EU and US in... some 20 days. I am actually considering a NDS :/

Didn't you read, I play a download...
Um... Okay so you didn't pay for the game?
Are you saying you didn't enjoy it because you felt guilty for not paying?
For God's sake, man! You're making tiny critters fight each other for profit and shinies!

Gen 1 was the best, man. :P
Pokemon Yellow was my first game that I ever got. That game was so great.
And then Silver was my next one, and it was pure awesome. I loved the "secret" final boss: your character from Gen 1... :P
I mean, there were a lot of problems with the early gens, and I'm looking at them with my nostalgia goggles, but the later generations just never pulled me in the same way. I still listen to old 8-bit R/B/Y music whenever I wanna get a nostalgia high.

Grew up on Gen 1 and Gen 2.
Even now before I fall asleep I can't help but pull out one of the old games and play for atleast 30 minutes.
Currently working on my all time Favorite, Pokemon Crystal.
In need of a Water Stone to evolve my Eevee to Vaporion, then teach it surf so I can get to the 5th gym.
Team:
Koffing
Quilava
Eevee
Scyther
Graveler

Are the differences between Black and White the same as usual? Different legendaries, some different names for the same characters, a couple arbitrary pokemon you can only get in one game, etc.?

I hear there's a couple battles types that switch in each game.
In one you can have 3 Pokemon out at a time, like the double battles, and in the other you switch Pokemon at the beginning of each turn, or some such thing.

RUBY VERSION, WHERE ARE YOU?
I preferred Groudon to Kyogre, but I preferred Sapphire to Ruby.
I did like Emerald though. The first time I saw Latios/Latias I didn't know you're supposed to pick the opposite of the color you want, but I misclicked and picked the wrong one and freaked out then it turned out to be the one I wanted. *Everything went better then expected face.*
