I'll close by noting that the Allakhazam Wowreader client has always worked flawlessly on my system.

I'm not that sure that our problems are related, but it seems to be linked, at least, with one of the issues you're facing.
On my desktop, the clients also claims that it couldn't find the wow folder even after having properly selected the Wow.exe file in my WoW directory. This issue poped when I moved my entire WoW directory from a HDD to another (F: to H:). Note that my Windows XP user account
isn't
limited.
