Thank you, OverZealous. There are a lot of us out there, driven to write - be it fan fiction or original - and it's so great to be able to share with like-minded people and, hopefully, see a return on my investment. I have been writing for many years, and I can't wait to reach an audience wider than my own circle of family and friends. :)
What sort of book are you writing?

I'm several hundred pages into a Dark Fantasy / Horror (at least I think that's what they'd call it), but I've been thinking (just thinking, mind you - probably won't) of switching over to Science Fiction since I've read quite a bit of it lately.
Have you tried any Book Publishers or did you go straight for self-publish?

I think the best advice is to write what you know and what you are most comfortable with, but it's all good practice. :)
Yes I tried a few years back to get published the traditional way, but had no joy. Unfortunately most publishers won't take on an author unless they have a literary agent, and those agents are swamped with submissions every month and only take on 1-2 new authors every year. Hence, it's a difficult market to get into, especially if you don't write the most popular types of fiction.
Times are changing now and fantasy is no longer the dirty little secret at the back of the bookstore lol. Not only that but ebooks are an exploding market and of course it cuts out the middle men.
Good luck with your book. :)

Indeed it is - almost everything takes good practice, though. I've found, however - that some have innate talent for writing, heh.
Yeah - I was in contact with a couple o' literary agents, but I got rejected immediately with two of them and after a read-through by a third. Tried a publisher directly - to see if they were interested, but no luck so far.
And yes, you're right - George R. R Martin commonly refers to the Fantasy market as "highly crowded", and it's not always the best books that are published, after all - I've read quite a few terrible ones ^^
And good luck to you, as well!
And I would advise you to stick around on Wowhead, particularly
here
; it's very beneficial for writing - lots of good stories to go around.

Just finished A Game of Thrones yesterday and started A Clash of Kings. Is it fair to say that George R. R. Martin is the Tom Clancy of high fantasy?

If you mean: Lots of characters and high death rate, then yes.

I'm going to have to take a look at this book. I just found it on my brother's shelf.

That's normal; when I worked at the local town library during high school, whenever the really popular new books came out we had waiting lists of 200-300, but all of the branches were connected so it didn't take as long as you though, since there were always a dozen or more copies floating around.

Oh. I was thinking three or four copies, lol - that would have been painful as heck.

Alloy of Law is outttttt - go go more Mistborn! =D
Also I haven't seen any G.K. Chesterton listed! =D
He isn't of the same ilk as most of these being listed (fantasy/non-fic) but....
All of his works are very quick witted and deep thinking while still being very accessible. He has short stories, mysteries, and also wide work of poetry and essays. He was a British Journalist by trade for the early 20th centenary (part of the group the contained Tolkien/Lewis). It is actually from one of his mysteries that Asimov first got the idea of robots. Asimov is always touted as the first thinker of robots, but he actually got it from G.K. ;)
