Just finished
The Knife of Dreams
. Picked up towards the end.
Now II'll have to see what Sanderson has done with the series.
Sanderson has done a wonderful job with books 12 and 13.
Waiting for AMoL. Supposed to be here in time for XMas. :D

Still no opinion? You all need to read more books with strong female leads :) I'll do Crown Duel first because that's only a single book.
Tamora Pierce is a good author, if I remember right from when I was really young.

Anything by Mercedes Lackey has strong female characters, whether they are the leads or not.

Nice! I love anything by Sanderson, so I'm somewhat biased, but I agree that, so far (about 200 pages in), he's done an excellent job. Getting ToM will be a pain though.

Hmm, I've got the
Hunger Games
trilogy to read, and then
1984
after that. I started the Hunger Games earlier, seems quite good so far. Anyone got any (hopefully relatively spoiler-free!) opinions/judgements on either?

1984
sucks, imo. Horribly written. I highly recommend
Fahrenheit 451
over
1984
. They're the same basic concept, but I will admit that
1984
is more fully realized.

So I had forgotten how true this was, (because it had been awhile since I read it; just reread it) but Patrick Rothfuss and
The Name of Wind
is the man. Need to go get the second one . . .

Honestly, despite being a huge Orwell fan, I agree with Funden. Well, I don't believe 451 and 1984 are exactly the same, but they're in the same genre of writing. I think Animal Farm paints a much better picture of what he's trying to say.

I might look into those later, depending on how I take 1984. :P

Agreed.
Animal Farm
was really, really good.
451 and 1984 aren't exactly the same, but there are enough similarities in setting and theme to put them in the same category, imo.

I enjoyed 1984, 451 and Animal Farm; they are all good books for different reasons.

So earlier on today I finished the
Hunger Games
trilogy. Other than a couple of snags and head-scratchers, I found them a great read, and there were some genuinely moving scenes.
Like Rue's death, but there are so many more I could list. But Rue's death stays with me the most without a shadow of doubt.

That settles it, then, I'll have to read the series myself.

Indeed, and the first film is out early next year so you may as well read them before that! :)
I'll probably start on
1984
tomorrow.

Just finished A Dance with Dragons - easily my favorite of the 5 that are out so far. Very angry that I have to wait on the rest of the series now, though.
I think I'm going to get the Wheel of Time stuff soon to read at work.

Both are excellent series, though I enjoyed ASoS a bit more than ADwD.
Also, the Wheel of Time is excellent until you hit
Winter's Heart.
After that, it slows down significantly until Sanderson picks up the reins.
Also, WB chaos. Good to see you around again.

Don't read the series. Read the first one, the second one is just a repetition of the first with even more "What the &*!@?" scenes and less moving scenes, and the third is just ridiculous, like the author tried to switch dramas completely mid-series. Just finished A Dance with Dragons - easily my favorite of the 5 that are out so far. Very angry that I have to wait on the rest of the series now, though.
Really? I honestly dislike the series more and more as it goes on. I enjoyed the first two by far the most. I mean, not as in that I dislike it, but like it less. I feel like George was originally going to write a 3 part series and is now having to stretch things quite a bit. The Free Cities are just really starting to get to me, I just keep thinking "Get me back to Westeros, or at least relate the two somehow." I don't mind that she stayed in Meereen for a while, but this is getting progressively more and more redundant and old with the Children of the Harpy. I'm happy she got her dragon back, in both meanings of the term. I think The Wall is great, if a little dragged out (still better than Meereen though). Don't read on if you don't want to hear possibilities from beyond the fifth book. Spoiler within a spoiler? No, this is actually serious. Don't read unless you want to know what might happen in six and seven. First of all, as a background, I have a feeling Jon Snow isn't Ned Starks son. I think he was the son of Lyanna Stark, Eddard's sister. Jon Snow goes off to the tower where Raegar's holding her, and comes back from the war with a bastard. I have an inkling it's actually Lyanna's child. Here comes the spoilers. I have a friend whose mom works in the showbiz, specifically casting actors. Now this could very well be untrue, but she says that Dany and Jon are going to hook up at some point. Now this means that, first of all, Jon is not dead. Second of all, it means Dany made it to Westeros (which was obvious /sigh, I don't dislike her as a character I dislike what she means as a character). Now if Jon was blood of the Tagaryans... /shrug.

I highly, highly doubt that Jon is the blood of the Targaryens. No mention of blonde hair/purple eyes is made (though this is offset by being a bastard, nobody knows the other half of his parentage.
However, from a story standpoint, it would take away from Danaerys and Aegon, who are already poised to either join and form a large military alliance or plunge the land back into civil war.
It would be interesting to get the Free Cities to fight with Westeros, however. While I agree that it got old with Danaerys and Meereen, I do enjoy Arya's plot, so I hope she becomes connected with the other players again.
