And of course, J.R.R Tolkien cannot be left out.Well, if you don't like his works....it can.
You're a minority, so we can discriminate against you. Meh, still don't like his stuff.

Raymond E. Feist
Have
Flight of the Nighthawks
sitting open next to me as we speak.
H.P Lovecraft - The guy's a classic, not much to argue about íf you ask me
QFT. Lovecraft is the best horror writer there is.
The Lurker at the Threshold
is my favorite.
@Adamsm: Fair enough
Then i suggest you close Wowhead and start reading. Preferably continuing with Into a Dark Realm when you're done!
I prefer The Thing on the Doorstep, Call of Ctulthu and Herbert West - Reanimator (apparently it's not widely considered to be one of his best, but i really like it), but i agree, Lovecraft is THE horror writer.

I'm going to be lazy and quote myself from another thread someone asked me about Lovecraft in...
The Call of Cthulhu
's a good one. That's the one he's most famous for.
At the Mountains of Madness
has a Shoggoth, which is my favorite of his creatures.
The Dunwich Horror
is particularly good, I think, as is the
Shadow over Innsmouth
.
And then there's two good ones I've read that feature Randolph Carter, Lovecraft's self-insert fan-fic character (a writer with weird dreams that shows up all over the place):
The Statement of Randolph Carter
and
The Unnamable
.
You should be able to read most of those
here
.
Edit: And oh, one of my favorites, one that has none of his famous monsters, but shows off his wondrous talent for atmosphere is
The Transition of Juan Romero
.

Pullmans books are pretty good, the movie sucked.
Yeah, the movie definetly wasn't worth it and didn't really do the books justice.
I'd certainly assume we're talking about The Golden Compass and stuff, right? I definitely agree, the book was a lot better than the movie, although I would still love for them to make the other 2 books into movies just because it'd be cool to see. I haven't read those in a good while, I'll have to do that.

Yeah we are, as far as i know anyway, and i haven't read them in a while either but as i recall i found books 2 and 3 better than the Golden Compass.
Might sell to the general audiences better with more Fantasy (slicing holes in the very air to walk right into other worlds? Angels?) added into it.

Are they as anti religious as the fundies make them out to be?

Depends. There were definite shots against religion, but it really only seemed to be against non-progressive organized religion.

I just recently read Empire of Illusion by Chris Hedge.
I know that their isn't a whole lot of non-story oriented love for books in here, but I really had to mention that one. Warning: Second chapter is VERY GRAPHIC, but if it didn't it wouldn't be able to make it's point, and it definitely makes its point.

Well....God(or the old man) dies and an inglorious death at that, and the Metatron is one of the reasons for it........then of course, the whole daemon/demon thing, and all the rest heh.

The witches 'religion' is good, the Kingdom of Heaven is bad. The Republic of Heaven is good.
Thus it is anti non-progressive organized religion. Granted it's been a few years.

God/The Old Man still dies by being tossed into what is essentially a bottom less pit.

Exactly.

Some would claim them to be, I for one don't really agree. Sure there are some things that could be taken as anti-religious if you look into it hard enough, but you can find anti-religion almost everywhere if you just try enough.
Jumping to a different topic; Does anyone have a clue when the fourth and last part of the Inheritance Cycle is coming out? Figured it's been a few years now
Nevermind that, it was just announced for the 8th of November :p

What's it like? Is it a serious Harry Potter/Narnia/Eragon/His Dark Materials type series, or a humourous Discworld/Hitchhiker's Guide type series?
(I've actually only read two of those series that I mentioned.)

From the
official websit
e, a synopsis by the author:
Synopsis of the first book by Brandon
I came into this book with two big ideas for the plot. The first was that of a heist story, like SNEAKERS or OCEAN'S ELEVEN involving a gang of gentlemen thieves who each had a distinctive magic power. I wanted to tell the story of how their different magics and abilities worked together for them to pull an incredible caper.
The second idea was to write a story about a world where the good guys lost. I wanted to take the standard fantasy story I'd read a dozen times—that of a young peasant hero who went on a quest to defeat a Dark Lord—and turn it on its head. What if the Dark Lord won? What if, in the final climactic moments, he killed the hero and took over the world?
Hence, MISTBORN. A thousand years ago, the prophesied hero from lore rose up to overthrow a great and terrible evil. Only, he lost, and the Dark Lord took over and has been ruling with an iron fist for a thousand years. Ash falls from the sky in this barren land, and mists come every night, deep and mysterious. In this setting, a gang of thieves decides that the prophecies were all lies and that they can't trust in some fabled hero to save them. They decide to take matters into their own hands, and plan a daring heist of the dark lord himself, planning to use the emperor's own wealth to bribe his armies away from him and take over the empire.
Anyway, that's the 'back of the book' movie trailer type explanation. If I talk about it more conversationally, however, the plot takes a back seat to characters. The truth is that while MISTBORN grew out of my love for heist movies, it didn't end up being much of a heist story itself. As early as the planning stages of the series, I felt that I wanted both more scope from the plot and more focus on character.
During development, the story moved further and further away from the heist. It's still there—don't worry—but it's more of a backdrop now. Instead, the book focuses on Vin, a young a young girl who gets recruited into the team. Beaten down by a life on the streets, Vin doesn't realize that she has the power of a Mistborn (the magic in this book, which many say is its prime selling point.) Her dynamic with Kelsier, the charismatic leader of the gang of thieves, is really what drives this novel.
The book has a little of everything for everyone. Romance, lots of action, a wiz-bang cool magic system, dark lords running amok, great visuals, and character tension. And that's just book one.

Yes! I'm liking the way that it is set in modern times, but Sazed being gone is sad.

Really? I'm not too sure if I'm liking that. Brisingr was good, except for Eragon being a retarded @#$%^&, but I didn't like the ending where Arya just

I haven't actually read this Mistborn series you're on about, seems like something worth doing.
I agree, Eragon is kind of "meh", and i dislike how Paolini made the Shade "race"(?) look weak by killing another. They seemed so mysterious and powerful with Durza, now they're just... half-interesting. I wonder if Paolini will
*SPOILER ALERT*
Kill off Eragon or Sapphira like he did with Oromis, or if he'll let them live. Hmm...
