Oh, and after the first or second book, The Sword of Truth series gets really lame really fast. In my opinion at least . . .
That's what a friend said too. I think I'll just read the first one, as I'm starved of books, and can't buy anymore what with Christmas coming.

Sadly no new books for me.
I have money though, so maybe I'll buy a paperback or two.

On topic: I recently started reading

So currently re-reading
Jinx High
by Mercedes Lackey....really wish Stephanie Myers had read it heh, as it was out in 1991, especially this part, where an aspiring writer talks to the main character Diana Tregarde, who is a professional author(in addition to being a Witch and a Guardian heh).
At that moment the lunch bell rang. "See you tomorrow, kids. Monica, can I talk to you for a minute? I got a chance to read your stuff last night."
"Sure." Monica gathered up her things; her stomach felt fluttery and uncertain. She was no longer quite so certain about the quality of her work. Sure it was alright for class, but -- Diana was a real writer, and she'd asked for a real writer's kind of critique.
"Monica," Di said, pulling a manila envelope out of her briefcase and handing it to her. "I'm pleased and surprised, on the whole. I won't kid you. You've got real, honest-to-God potential. You have a genuine flair for characterization and a solid grasp of the way conversation works. But --"
All through this Monica's heart had been lifting -- now it plummeted into her shoes. "But?" She replied doubtfully. "You might as well tell me the worse."
"Your plots are weak." Diana said with a touch of reluctance. "You make things entirely too easy for your characters. Think about it; a story where everything goes right and your character is perfect from the beginning is boring! Even in fairy tales things start out rotten for the heroine, get worse, and only at the very end does she 'live happily ever after.' You've got to make your character
work
for her happy ending. And making her wonderful, sweet, understanding, no faults at all -- what is she, Mother Teresa? If she's that fabulous, she should be a saint. You've got to make her interesting, give her warts, make her human."
"Like how?" Monica asked weakly. "I mean, what should I do?"
"Give her faults; make her impulsive, oversensitive, something. Give her PMS, for heaven's sake. And every time your heroine thinks she's got a clear path, throw something in her way and make her trip over it." Diana shook her head and lifted one eyebrow at her. "You're taking this very well, Monica. I've got to say I'm relieved -- and that I'll be happy to work with you."
Heh, then again, with the tripping comment, maybe Myers did read it....too bad she uses it as a bad plot point.
And I really should write up reviews for Lackey's series at some point.

I've just about finished the entirety of
The Federalist Papers
by Hamilton, Madison, and Jay. An excellent collection and wonderfully written: a must-read for Americans at the least and even those not living in the country on the necessity of both a Union and our peculiar constitutional republic...

We're all WoW nerds (well, for the most part), so I'd assume fantasy/sci-fi, which is what I like. Especially urban fantasy and Science Fantasy, and Military SF.

What about
Dune
by Frank Herbert?
Only the first Dune was really any good, though.
For the Atreides!
Dune
's a book I've been meaning to read for a while. I keep meaning to ask my one friend to let me borrow it (coincidentally, this same person lent me
Ender's Game
a few months ago) among a few other books.
I haven't really read much new, recently; I've actually done a #$%^load of re-reading. Every fall I reread all of Tolkien's works, then after that I felt like re-reading A Song of Ice and Fire, since the HBO series is coming up. Halfway through A Storm of Swords now (probably my favorite book of the series so far).

A Storm of Swords
= Win. I didn't really like
A Clash of Kings
, but I really liked
A Feast for Crows
. Sadly, I don't have cable/satellite, so I'll need to watch the TV show on Netflix.
Also: Started reading more of Raymond Feist's work, specifically the Serpentwar Saga.

I gotta say of the four out so far,
A Feast For Crows
was my least favorite by a little bit, mainly due to the absence of my two favorite characters, Tyrion and Davos. The only reason I like
A Clash of Kings
that much is because it introduced Davos, and because half the plot could basically be summarized as "Tyrion does a whole lot of awesome stuff".

There is that. I disliked Davos a little bit myself actually. Tyrion is easily the best character in there, but I also like reading about Petyr, and Robb.
Bran can just gtfo. I heartily disliked his whole storyline, and the whole "green seer" thing is just kinda... meh. I understand he's trying to add more magic into the series now that dragons are back, but I don't like the way he did it for Bran. 'course, I can't wait for him to go beyond the wall.
Also, John Snow. He is my other favorite character. Him and Tyrion. I can't wait until the Others get their game on.
