is there an entry-level trinket better than
this
(aside from the heroic version of course) for physical fights?
i was looking at new armor trinkets, and i see
this
and
this
... then i look in my bags and see my old scale from halion, and i'm wondering what's up? i mean why even bother putting those trinkets in the game when an ilevel 271 provides almost twice as much armor and a similar proc?
i realize that new gear has gotten very stingy on bonus armor, but the old trinkets didn't get touched. it seems hard to justify the difference in item level.

Mastery is the new Physical mitigation in my opinion. Mastery = Block and Critical Block. Mastery dosn't suffer DR (Nor does armor) and it's a lot more useful then armor these days since they nerfed the crap outta armor on Trinkets and gear. I'd advise against getting the Valor Trinket it's subpar to some of the Heroic rare ones you can get.
Trinkets with mastery if you care for them and them being 'entry' level:
King of Boars (Jewelcrafting only)
Tia's Grace
Porcelain Crab
(Reforge some of the dodge to Mastery)
Mirror of Broken Images
I've probably missed a few. Armor in my eyes is a stat we want but we can't easily obtain in like we could in wrath (even then it wasn't obsurdly easy). My stat priority at the moment is Master>Dodge/parry>Armor(if applicable)>Stam

Yeah, I'm running Mirror of Broken Images and Tia's Grace. (Was Porcelain Crab and Tia's Grace before i got the Tol Barad trinket).
The stamina trinket dropped off Magmaw yesterday and I passed it to our druid. I just wouldn't use the stamina trinket much and he'd use it full time.
I need to look at what other raid trinkets are available, but I'm pretty happy with Mirror and Tia's for the moment.

As far as mastery goes, Nothing inside of raids for us tanks wanting mastery on our trinkets.
All there are is Stamina trinkets. Which is pretty sad really. I'll probably be sticking with Mirror and Porcelain crab for a long time come heroic modes.
Off-topic: A thing that made me laugh the other day about Mirror is that someone suggested that the mastery be turned into stamina. I restrained myself from replying to this person.

Totally skipped my mind, but wouldn't
Lifebound Alchemist Stone
be a viable trinket? It has no proc/use effect but the double dose of Stam and Mastery plus a gem slot looks mighty tempting for raw stats.
It's a perfect trinket. Problem is not many tanks pick up Alchemy. They tend to go with Mining/Blacksmithing or Jewelcrafting.

Yea. My Warrior is Mining/BS, my Alchs are all casters. Between tasty trinkets and people charging ridiculous sums of money for the Vial of the Sands that may change.
Derailing this here, but i'd totally drop Mining for Blacksmith just to get an extra 80 mastery over the stam. Though in the long run i don't think it'll be that worth it. So i ain't gonna bother until i'm extremely bored one day.

The King of Boars is 3 in 1, strength also gives parry rating now so it's not only a threat boost but also a (small) avoidance boost when you use it.

Not for nothing, but as a levelling prot warrior running Blackrock Caverns, the
Elementium Dragonling
is pretty rockin' for all that mastery.

That 1425 strength is actually right about 2% pre-DR parry. At the levels people are right now we are seeing around 10-12% reduction in avoidance, so that would be about 1.75% avoidance on use for 20 seconds. That is not too shabby at all.

yeah, i agree with most of the posts here - mastery is great. however, armor is just as powerful now as it always has been, even if nobody is talking about it.
my question is how can an item level 346/359 trinket have almost 1/2 the armor of an item level 271 trinket? the difference in proc does not make up for that much armor.

# Lich King trinkets with bonus armor values have been adjusted using the new Cataclysm formula, reducing their armor values substantially.
I know this is a 3 day old topic but i thought it was worth posting here for you now. I think they caught onto us!
From the latest test realm patch notes.

They basically adjusted the item budget cost of armor. What the PTR patch notes indicate is that they're now adjusting the remaining old bonus-armor items (eg. trinkets) to the new budget, so wrath items will not be better. Overall, the nerf to armor is pretty huge.
For another example, look at the new armor enchants. The cloak slot has always had an armor enchant, in wrath too, so they did have to improve it for cataclysm; but the enchant only went from 225 to 250 armor. They also gave us a new 160 armor enchant for shield, which is a lot less armor per rating compared to the alternatives (40 block rating) than we've been used to.

On the subject of cloak, I wish there was something more useful for tanking.

you will find little in WoW better than armor for tanking.

bummer, but i figured it had to happen. the old trinkets were just too OP compared to the new ones.
i did notice the shield armor enchant, but like you said it's much less than would be expected. it's kind of weird having a clock enchant or glove enchant giving much more armor than your shield enchant!
what about gloves? still stuck with the BC 240 armor? i guess at least there's a mastery choice now, which may prove to be better.
