A good Shadow Priest knows when not to use VE but its a good idea to have at least 1 point in it. Its very useful especially if you use sw:d in your spell rotation.

then i would work on getting better tanks, don't let your role as the healer's mana battery suffer because you are afraid of getting hit. use a decent threat meter, I use Omen, and you will be fine.
So you'd rather return unnecessary hp and limit how much dps you can do? That will return less mana. Let's face it, VE is nice, but we're not there to heal.
