So i was grouping with a hunter who claims he has a lvl 70 mage and all that, he says that a fire mage is better off sacrificing as much damage as possible for more crit. I was skeptical at first, then he went on about how he said he owned a huge stock of vivendi stuff, obviously trying to claim he is right.
So do you guys agree on this?

No.
cap hit, stack damage, take whatever crit comes with the gear/gems.
Truth. Your hunter was a noob, friend. :)

Agreed. Especially if you are PVE fire (10/48/3)... you'll hit 30%ish crit with fire spells without even concentrating on crit gear. A passive crit percentage of 18-23% is good, IMO.

I'm 10/48/3. 31.76% fire crit with 126 hit. Of course that's with the +3% molten armor crit bonus. and that's not even trying to get crit. my armory is in my sig.

Well, if we're talking PvE, then you want:
+hit > +damage > +crit
Try to get hit capped as soon as possible.
Sure, with less crit, you won't see those big flashy numbers as often, but your overall damage will improve.
Its true for PVP as well. Thing is, in pvp, the hit cap is 3% which elemental precision takes care of. Now all you have to do is stack spell damage and take whatever crit comes with the gear/gems. Though, for pvp, you may want to stack stamina / resilience instead of spell damage, but im not entirely sure about that.
Cap hit, stack damage, take crit
Problem with trying to stack +spell crit in PVP is the huge amount of resilience your opponents are going to invariably have. 118 resilience is all that is needed to reduce your crit chance by 3 percent and crit damage by 6 percent. Most pvp gear and some pve have alot of resilience rating, so hitting that mark isn't too hard, where as trying to get the extra crit rating to overcome this will be quite difficult (about 66 points extra crit chance gear) Agreed that for PVP it is better to stack stamina and resilience your self and then +spell damage to try and survive just a little longer, cause a dead mage does no damage.

Crit benefits a scorch build more than + dmg
but that scorch specc loses many things so all mages specc deep fire and for that + dmg benefits you more but before that cap hit rating
