My take on it: I have two accounts.
I loved WoW. WoW was an awesome game, but there were a few things about it that annoyed me. For instance, Blizzard never provided us with any way to disable autoflagging, and added multiple undocumented ways to get flagged, and never told us exactly what the new rules were. (Some guards will flag you simply by aggroing on you. Other guards will only flag you if you hit them...) Trion added a way to disable autoflagging on PvE servers. YAY!
We get armor dyes. We get a beautifully flexible class system. We get crafting skills that, at every level, produce a decent mix of items that are better than quest rewards of a comparable level. We get massive ongoing invasions that take out quest hubs completely. We can craft bows.
In short... Rift is everything I always wished WoW would be, that it never quite turned into. It does feel a lot like WoW, if you played WoW. If you played EQ, it feels a lot like EQ, I'm told. But after you get past the first zone and start exploring the world, it starts feeling like it's a game designed by people who worked heavily on a lot of other MMOs, and took all that experience and all those lessons learned, and decided to make the game they wished they could have made before.
Given their staff list, I suspect this is not a coincidence.
Just one warning: Queue times are, of course, in hours on the first day of head start.

I played the Beta, and really enjoyed the game. My only problems with it are twofold.
1. The lore. It's so cliche I could cry. WoW's was cliche as well, but it had the decency of being awesome and long running, thus when a new villain pops out you can go: "Oh yeah, I remember you. Bring it." This allows characters from Warcraft 3 especially to become awesome lore characters in WoW, and brings a blast of nostalgia every time I see one.
2. The soul system. The soul system is great, I like the flexibility, but I feel there isn't enough depth.
I like WoW's class system of 10 because you can go very deep into each class and streamline things, whereas with Rift if you make one change, it will have a ripple effect over all the different combinations.
I like the flexibility and customization, but I think I like WoW's more.

4th of March is long away, have to grit my teeth, and deal with WoW....for now.
8 days is a long ways away? You have to deal with WoW for 8 more days? If you really dislike WoW so much that you'd leave it cold turkey for another MMO then maybe you should take a week off of MMO's.
On topic: I'll try it if they offer a free trial at some point, but I like WoW enough to continue with it given the investment I have in it so far. I know you never truly beat a good MMO, but I think the only things that could get me to leave it are time/monetary conflicts that make it impossible to spend any decent time in game, if my in-game friends all closed their accounts, or if Blizzard starts shutting down servers. Fortunately, I don't see any of those things happening anytime soon.

I actually really like the soul system, it's not nearly as marginal as it looks at first, because you're also getting new abilities just for spending points in the tree; the root thing really adds depth.
I dunno, on the whole, I quite like the lore and the soul system. Super happy, having a great time. Even though I can't play right now (out erranding), I've been discussing interesting soul combos with a friend, and it's been fun. I did get logged in briefly.
They started with 30ish servers, I think they're up to about 50 now, they're trying not to add them too fast and end up with huge numbers of empty servers.
Stability is AMAZING. You remember what Hellfire Penninsula looked like on the first day of TBC? The starting zones look like that, except they're smooth and they work fine.

The root thing saves me a walk. WoW's points are in the talent tree itself, Rift just gathers them at the bottom. Not really that special, tbh.

Why? It's a very cliche fantasy plot, from what I've seen.

Hellfire Peninsula also came out in 2007.

It sort of is -- it means that you don't have to pick those powers, and that a lot of things you might spend points on which are otherwise marginal are big bumps 'cuz they give you new powers.

Yes, but I am finding it pretty well done. I mean, seriously, I want to play a game with elves and dwarves, I am not gonna complain about "cliches". The thing I like is the relative depth and detail of it for a new setting. I enjoy reading about it, and the setting makes sense to me. I feel less like the main characters are painfully stupid than I often did while playing WoW.

Well, yeah. I think the server pop limits are a bit higher, but... yeah, the improvements in technology certainly help.
Anyway, long story short:
* It's quite smooth, although there are still queue times.
* They started with 30ish servers and have gone to about 50.
* I'm really liking the community so far.
* I am also happier with the moderation, what I've seen of it.
I'm happy with it, and I'm expecting the community to be large and active. And fun.

/shrug. It's not bad for sure, but not the best I've seen.

I agree, except for one part. All the characters in the Guardian starting zone were... meh, tbh. WAY too strawmanned ultra zealot strawmen for my taste.

Well, I'm playing WoW while waiting for my queue spot to pop in Rift.
WoW just isn't doing it for me anymore - yeah, I'm still playing... but I have 0 Guildies on consistently, other Guilds are having the same issue. People are hardly raiding and if you're not in a full hardcore Raid Team/Guild, well, you're relegated to dungeon queues.
In 6 months time I'll have to make a choice between my Wife and my new Mistress.... just have to see how it goes...
For the OP - if you are like many others and finding that WoW just isn't tickling your fancy anymore, try giving Rift a shot for 6 months. I know a *lot* of people who have paid the $120 for CE and 6 months Founders subscription because they figure, well if at 6 months I don't play anymore, it cose me a console game (equivalent). Yes, having two accounts is costly but more costly is canning your WoW account to only find you don't like Rift.
Someone I'm sure can also clarify if you stop paying your WoW subs, how long will your toons and gear still be around for before being wiped.

False. My guild is a very casual guild that raids weekly.

How is it false? It's my observation on my server. While Hardcore Guilds on my server are still going ok, the medium to casual guilds are suffering (I can name at least half a dozen with 150+ members who cannot get 10 people on at once let alone raid).
Does that make it false? Hardly. Does it make you fortunate? Yes.

It's my observation on my server.
You made it sound like that's a widespread epidemic, where from what I've seen on a few different servers, it isn't.
