you are correct Nick, but also it is completely optional.
You may have the guild titles turned off for yourself.
Escape -> Interface -> Names -> check/uncheck Guild Titles.
Yes, however this only affects how you see others, not how others see you. Not sure which you are meaning, but that should be a little clearer.
