sheep first, then pyro for a 2k head-start. use counterspell & dragons breath to stun them long enough to get a few scorches in. hope that impact procs. fire blast & arcane explosion to finish them off. fireball takes too long to cast.
keep any warrior, paladin, and rogue at a distance. use frost armor, frost nova, and blink to keep your distance. keep in mind that warriors can intercept & rogues can sprint, so it's not perfect. paladins are worthless at range... save counterspell for just before you think they will bubble.
priest fear is an area of effect fear... stay at long range.
warlock howl is AOE, stay at long range. another is a cast (3 sec cast, i believe... i once blinked OUT of range while he was casting & ran back in to finish him off), deathcoil hasn a cooldown... they'll get you with it, but they won't always have it available.
rogues get me all the time, too. spam rank 1 arcane explosion.... constantly.
there are always other people in the BGs. run with them... that's why they're there. work as a team and you will win more.

Personally, I wouldn't be to worried about losing now, and I wouldn't spend a lot of time updating my pvp gear at level 60. Chances are you will be upgrading it on your quest to level 70, Save your honor for the good stuff, and when your 70, then you can get the gear that will make a difference.
In the meantime you can just get used to what tricks to do as a mage, and playing the class.
Just my thoughts.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I've definitely benefited from the new lvl 60 gear I've gotten so far. Likely going to limit myself to 3 pieces of the 60 set. I know it's not really a good time investment in terms of the optimal path to the top gear, but its tons of fun, and that's all I'm looking for at this point. Is the difference in the honor you get from this bracket really different from the 70 bracket?
Skip the L60 gear, imo. Leveling-in-Outland gear is often-better and cheaper on your time investment, so that should be what you're doing when you aren't PvPing ;). Of course, if you have the honor, go ahead and take what you can get.
What's a better indicator of performance? HK's? Damage? Kills?How many times you survive a fight. ;) A dead dpser is a worthless one.
