It's gotten particularly bad in Cataclysm, though. Besides, you can't really wait five seconds before entering combat when you've just been stunned on a land mount, forcibly dismounted, or engaged while mounted in a BG. In those cases, your pet is SOL until this thing gets fixed.
I agree.
And I know Warlocks and Unholy Death Knights (their pets also scale from Stamina, which is where this error is coming from) suffer, but their pet retrieval abilities don't take 10 #$%^ing seconds. Also, DK Ghouls start with larger base health, as do Warlock demons.
Hunter pets get a pathetic 6k base before the stats scale. That's where the programming issue is. They honest to god need to fix it.

Ah yes, the old "Please Mr. Feral Druid, could you wait for 5 seconds after I dismount before you Pounce on me?" request while running around Tol Barad. They usually say 'yes.'
Oh, wait...
It's bad enough to have your pet die as soon as you dismount while you are doing dailies. On PvP servers and in BGs it can cost you a lot more than a wee bit of frustration.

There is the option of dismounting just prior to engaging in combat, running a few steps, and then fighting. Or, in some cases, you can just be far enough away, send your pet in to attack, and by the time he actually engages in combat, his health will be substantial. The mend pet button is your friend. I personally don't mount up after every mob I kill, so I dont run into this issue all that frequently.
Also, if a feral druid is openning on you, with the situation we're in thusfar, you're probably going to die anyways. Dieing faster just means you can actually be of use to your team quicker. Thats the bitter truth of it.
And if you get dazed off your mount? Passive the pet right?
Because we should have to do it while every other class can just turn and fight normally while we get mauled, disengage, kite until the scaling works....

Hitting Misdirection before starting to attack (you do have the glyph, right?) fixes this, as your pet will have all his health before the 1.5 second GCD finishes.

1.) When're you running around on your ground mount for any significant portion of levelling, where your pet will be 1-shotted when it spawns? It doesn't happen, almost at all, pre 60, and post 60, when you have a flying mount, theres no reason for you to be landing on top of mobs in the first place.
You're gimping yourself by landing that close to anything that can kill you. It's completely unnecessary.
Actually, it happens surprisingly often if you keep your pet on defensive, hence why I mentioned passiving the pet. Keep in mind stuff other than dismounting can also cause this (I think zoning, for instance, can briefly cause this issue)
The biggest offender is Tol Barad though...that's not a leveling spot...hmm.

1 second GCD, and I have yet to have Misdirection work on a PvP player.
No but it can be fun to use on Gnome/Mages.

I don't know if it's just me, but since returning to WoW, and even before I left, I never noticed this problem of pet health when dismounting/summoning my pet.
I have always been able to simply jump off my flying mount, and instantly start to engage things whilst falling from the sky, or simply jumping off mount and start shooting things whilst running towards them. My pet has always been at full health, even when zoning into a raid, dungeon or bg.

Actually I think it causes a 1.5 second GCD.
