Well, frost is incredibly good in PvP. Most, I think, would consider it better than fire against other players.
But... In instances and raids.... I have to say fire. For one very important reason. Most bosses seem to be immune to frost nova. And if your opponent can't be frozen, your ability to deal damage is severly hampered. Ice lance is worthless. Also, a-lot of your damage is based on cooldowns. Your familiar and icey veins are of limited use, because you don't always have them. Your Ice Barrier is (or at least should be with a good tank and healer) be unused.
Fire, sense so much of it goes into damage, it much more useful. Tons of damage, with a max of 41 yard range, better AoEs that can be used well to stack together. Not sure about raids or heroics, but in the instances I've run, waiting a minute or two in a pull, than rushing forward to do a blast wave, dragon's breath, frost nova combo has served me very well.
However, to put in a different viewpoint, ice does have a threat reducing talent available, and less threat = more damage you can deal. Also, with ice barrier and your other ways to avoid damage, you'll be less strain to a healer against the AoEs around and you'll be able to take care of yourself in the event you DO pull too much aggro. Combine that with the fact that ice damage has a MUCH smaller range (more predictable damage) and it's not as bad as alot of people say.
Still, taking all points into consideration, I really feel that fire is the better way to go, if raiding and instances are where you're at.
If, however, you're going to arena or BG, then ice is definitely where you want to be.

I agree with the above poster. As a frost mage, I am very competitive with fire and arcane spec mages in raids.

Just to clarify I had been speaking of Frost Channeling, which reduces threat by 12% when fully invested into.
I would like to comment on your Blob though. While I do agree that with the blob up the DPS is probably very similar to that of a fire mage, in boss fights (most of which take over 45 seconds) and in bad pulls (which happen), your DPS is going to drop drastically compared to that of a fire mage once the Blob is gone.
Also, and this is more of a question, where does Molten Fury come into play? 20% against elite 70s is quite a long time, and this greatly adds to your DPS.
Another question is what about ignite?
The math that you speak of seems odd. How can an Ice mage, with or without Blob, come close to matching a fire mage in a boss fight? Full scorch (which you'd be casting any ways to allow tank to get strong aggro), combustion, ignite, and molten fury, and I don't see how an ice mage could take that..
I'm asking to clarify, not to argue.
Overall though, it of course depends on what you WANT to play. Even if fire was 100% better (and it's obviously not) and you love playing ice, play ice. You'll play it better and enjoy it.

As a frost mage I often out DPS the fire mages in my guild. Your water elemental used in conjunction with Icy Veins and Cold Snap can destroy fire mages. DPS generally is higher in fire mages, but DPM is MUCH higher with frost, and that's what's most important in raids.
