"His minions." Martin gestured lazily to Jonas. "We could use them as meat shields. Or something."

If any of the books were inherently magical, it did not show. Nothing sparkled or moved on its own accord, no whispers tried to worm their way into the Earthmen's heads. They were interesting enough on their own.
Mercer was immensely pleased to discover that the aborigines had managed to invent a fountain pen; he had never quite managed to learn to write with quills. He quickly assembled a toolkit of a novice scribe and picked up a simple leather briefcase, then headed back to Hafiz to talk money.
"I humbly express a hope you were able to find whatever it was you were looking for," the goblin scrooped. It was hard to discern the creature's emotions, but Alistair decided the shopkeeper was sincere - after all, it would mean a sum of money was about to change ownership.
"Quite so," Alistair smiled politely in an attempt to recover from his initial blunder and revert to the more formal and dignified speech patterns.
"Moreover, now that I see for myself just how varied the merchandise is, I was wondering if perhaps there is something else I might find here?"
"Perhaps," Hafiz allowed. Mercer wondered if his rather blunt flattery helped his cause. "Just what do you have in mind, mister..."
"Gryphonheart. Say, suppose one were entitled to receive a set of armor engraved with runes, and suppose also one had no prior knowledge about working with runes, yes? Now, one could seek hired help of a runesmith to look after their armor, or one could try and educate themselves, at least the very basics, to know the signs when repairs are needed before the runes, say, implode due to malfunction. Within this premise, what would you recommend?"
Alistair's first thought was, of course, about runeblades rather than runic armor, but the former were heavily associated with death knights, and the latter, hopefully, was not.
"The very basics, you say?" Hafiz arced an eyebrow and twitched his bat-like ears. "Well, you might consider the works of Archmage Ansirem Runeweaver, as well as other such publications issued by Kirin Tor. They are quite numerous, which is why you will find an entire section dedicated solely to the works sanctioned by that organization. Over there."
"My gratitude," Alistair nodded. When he turned away from the stationer, Hafiz continued nonchalantly, "Or, provided you are interested, I might offer you a journal of a master runesmith, a dwarven thane."
Mercer froze in his steps. "And what would the name of this thane be, hm?" he asked slowly over his shoulder.
The storekeeper bared his teeth - small and wickedly sharp.
"Korth'azz."
Well.
Darn.

An Essay on the Schools of Magic
by Brother Thomas? Most curious. Maybe obtaining information about the potential powers the magi hunting them could prove useful. At the very least it could provide some insight on which one would be the most dangerous of them.
JJ pulled out the book and added it to the pile that already had grown with a notebook and some writing equipment.
What else would we need? A map? Of what?
No, there was no knowing where they would need to go next so that would just be a waste of money.
He let out a tired grumble and transported his 'hoard' to the counter.
- "That should do it for now. Hopefully."

"Those imps", Stitch began a bit hesitantly, glancing at said demons apparently just hanging around for the fun of it. "Think they can be of some use next time?"
After a short pause, he continued apologetically: "I realize I didn't help much this time, but I'm trying to be constructive. Have you ever seen what happens if a car hits a wild boar? This is no game. Well actually it is (he shrugged confusedly) but you know what I mean."

"So are we killing the dimension-hoppers today or?" Eduard asked, sounding insecure about the status of their mission. "Brrrrr, it's cold here!"

Mercer licked his lips. His heart raced. To wield such power-
No. Now was neither the time nor the place. He forced himself to calm down and reminded himself that he had no way to know if the book was genuine. Besides, unlike mass-produced teachings of Kirin Tor, surely it would cost a fortune.
That said, he could not lie to himself. Death knights fascinated Mercer to no end, and one day, he promised himself, he would read that book. He would not show weakness by dismissing works of a known Scourge champion as evil, but neither he would draw attention to his hunger for precisely such knowledge.
"How intriguing," he drawled, picking his words carefully. "Would that I had a sufficient sum on my person so as to afford such a
rara avis
. Alas, it would seem I will have to resort to more common writings. One must hope this is not the last time I come upon it."
"One may hope," Hafiz allowed placidly, dismissing Alistair to deal with JJ. He quickly tallied up the hoard, chewed his lips and named the total price.
Meanwhile, Alistair wandered off, only to return soon enough with one of Ansirem's works in tow.

- "A pleasure doing business with you sir", he said, stepping out of Mercer's way.

"I'd say so." Jonas looked back to the surviving specimen, currently lying face down in the snow and not moving. "Now that I actually know what this thing does anyway."
"
My true power remains DORMANT yet! Kingdoms shall TREMBLE when I wake fully.
"
"But yeah. Don't worry about it," Jonas told him. "I think we're still in the tutorial phase here. Can't exactly expect to one man Ulduar when you start out." He grew bitter. "Goddam Flame Leviathan. Stupid siege engines and motor bike bull crap."

"Pleasure is all mine," Hafiz croaked, deftly stowing the money away. In a similarly brisk manner he dealt with Mercer, and thus their visit was concluded.
"Well," Mercer muttered sulkily, just quiet enough for JJ to hear him, when they exited, "Sure hope I didn't miss an opportunity of a lifetime back there."

"Exactly so. Hafiz claimed to be in a possession of a journal written by one of them, the dwarf Korth'azz. Something tells me I don't have nearly enough money on my person to buy a rarity like that, I have no way to prove its authenticity, and, now that I think of it, it's probably in dwarven anyway if it's real after all."
Alistair sighed wistfully.
"I still want the damned thing, yes? Stupid high-level quest..."

- "Well that is a very interesting offer indeed. And what is also curious is that he was willing to sell it, given that it was authentic. But then I should remember that this is a goblin we are speaking of, and goblins prefer collecting gold to books", JJ spoke, more so to himself than Alistair.
- "May I suggest getting our hands on some weapons next?"

"Or maybe no one wants it, or it was a con, or, well," Mercer huffed, "I'll have to dwell on the matter later."
"Anyway," he added, looking around, "Weapons, good point, reasonable, yes. You settle on what you want yet?"
Mercer spoke abruptly, as if struggling to keep a train of thought on the rails. He was aware of the matter, it displeased him, and so he became even less coherent. A vicious cycle.
