Ok, my wife is getting off work early, and coming to pick me up. Then we are going to go pick out a set of cards together.
Fair Warning, MyTie:
A buddy of mine "just had to show me" this new game he had started playing. So we went to a local card shop, bought a couple decks, some dice, and a few extra packs of cards.
Fast forward about 18 years or so now, and I could have bought a nice new car for what I have invested in that game! I actually finally kicked my habit about 5 years ago....just in time for my oldest son to make the transition from Pokemon and Yu-gi-oh into Magic.
The nice thing is, I have a pretty valuable collection. I have multiple complete sets all the way from Beta, through both Revised and Classic, as well as many Alpha cards and several Alpha error cards. The bad news is, I could never bring myself to sell them.

I consider myself warned.
We bought two different "Intro Packs" from the 2012 core set. She got a white/green set, with focuses on gryphons angels and trolls, and I got a white/blue set, that seems to focus on an assortment of things, with my "foil" card being this Sphinx.
Edit: ok, ive got the "Mystical Might" deck, and she got the "Sacred Assault" deck

k, so here's a basic rundown of your decks.
Mystical Might - Control / flying for beatdown that hopefully your opponent can't do anything about. The control cards like Cancel, Oblivion Ring, and Summon all help you keep your opponent from being able to do what they want to do. When someone plays a spell, you have an opportunity to react to that with an Instant. Cancel counters a spell, which means they don't get to play it and it goes to their graveyard.
Sacred Assault - This deck is a little more straight forward. You play Creatures, then you play Enchantments on those creatures to make them bigger and meaner and smack your opponent around. Pacifism an be played on your opponents creatures to make them useless and a few of your creatures have Regenerate, which keeps them from dying. You would pay the cost for the Regenerate ability, which puts a "shield" on the creature basically. If they would die from damage or an effect, they don't.

That's the deck I've been running on the free MTGO. I'm sitting with about a 7-3 record with it (coincidentally the most common deck I play against is that Sacred Assault one).
Like chaos said, the main reason I win is because I get a few flying creatures on the board and I can usually prevent the other guy from successfully getting a flyer down to block (Oblivion Ring, Unsummon, Aether Adept, Mind Control, Cancel). I just chip away at them 2-4 damage at a time. It tends to work well against Sacred Assault because of people's tendency to beef up one creature with a ton of enchants, which is easier to control than a field of 2/2's (I'm probably 3-3 against Sacred Assault, I've definitely been demolished by that deck a couple times).
The few games I've actually gotten one of the huge flyers down (Serra Angel, Sphinx of Uthuun, Phantasmal Dragon) my opponent just conceded as soon as I cast it.
When I lose it's because I get swarmed by too many creatures and then locked down with Pacifisms and the like. There's only so much control in the deck, so sometimes I just get overrun, and the creatures I do control tend to be pretty weak blockers.
Is it guaranteed that you'll get a Foil Rare in the intro packs, or was that just lucky? I seem to remember most of my foils being commons (I did pull one foil Lotus bloom though <3).

Foils seem to come with the Intro pack. They are displayed in the front of the box, prominently.
I've only played once. I won. I got my Sphinx down, but it got pacificism cast on it immediately. I put down the thing that makes all my creatures fly, but that got immediately destroyed. My phantasmal dragon got enchanted as soon as I played it, too.
In the end, I just overran my opponent (one of the nerds in the junk shop who was teaching me while my wife watched). The last spell he went to cast I forget what it was, but I canceled it and finished him off.
I had phantasmal bear in play, along with the mastodon, and a few other creatures.
Edit: Would
this
be a nice addition to my deck?

the intro packs were supposed to be free. if people are selling it, you can sue them. those cards are promotional only. that's how i got mine for free.

Haha, yeah, I'd take anything for free too, but I've never heard of that. Might be true, but it sounds unusual.

Wizards had half decks they were giving away for a while, but that's all I've ever seen.

I brought 1 friend into the game. Today, I'm going to bring 2 more. I was dueling with a friend last night, and he was using old cards back in 2005. Is that legal? :(

As long as you're not playing Standard. When my friends and I play, we play off the old restricted / banned lists and anything else is fair game. Most of us have been playing since the mid-90s, though, so a lot of our cards are older too.

Okay, so I'll run back over what Jubilee mentioned before about the formats -
Vintage (formerly Type 1) - All sets legal for play, but there is an extensive banned / restricted list due to how crazy some of the cards are. This is what my friends and I play.
Legacy - same as vintage, except no restricted list
Modern - All sets from 8th Edition / Mirrodin forward (basically the last 8 years), there is a banned list.
Standard (formerly Type 2) - This is the standard tournament format. Typically, the cards that are legal are limited to the most recent 2 blocks (3-6 sets) and the corresponding Core set (currently M12). There is usually a banned list for this format, but it's rarely more than a couple of cards.
You and your friends can bicker if you want, but I tend to stick with Vintage, which means the cards they were using were probably fine.

You look at the little symbol right below the bottom right corner of the picture. That symbol corresponds to the set it is in, and
you can look here
if you don't remember or know which is which.

The highlights:
Red -
burn spells
(spells that do direct damage to
creatures
or
players
),
fast creatures
(
goblins
and
wizards
are prime), and heavy hitting
dragons
Blue -
control spells
(spells that interact with players and other spells in ways other than damage, for example cards that
cancel
out spells your opponent casts, or spells that
give you control
over his creatures, overall the easiest color to troll with), l
ots
of
flying
creatures
,
drawing cards
, and
milling
(which is the fancy term for making a player put cards from his library into his
discard pile
)
Black -
zombie
and
vampire
creatures,
destruction
spells,
discard spells
, and is one of the main
infect
colors
White - Lifegain
, angel (flying and big) and
soldier
creature (smaller but usually work in some sort of synergy with other creatures or
equipment
) feature heavily, a moderate amount of
control
, and lots of
enchantments
to pump your creatures
Green - features creatures heavily and usually has the
biggest
and meanest, lots of
pump
spells to make your creatures even bigger, has most of the
ramp
cards (cards that let you draw and lay down lands faster than normal, which helps you get your big green creatures out faster), and this is the other color that has most of the
infect
creatures.

I don't own any cards, I've only been playing for a year. My favorite decks are mono-green ramp decks and blue-white control decks.
