Lf help with announce macros for prot pala

I've seen a paladin with some macros (or possibly addons) that would announce when ardent defender procs and when their shield throw missed. I've tried to think of how such a thing would be written, but being pretty green to macro writing I'm a bit stumped.
Do any of you know how such macros work, and what if any addons are needed to support them? My hubby could really use these on his prot pala, and since im often either healing or dpsing with him, I reeeally like to know when that shield missed :)
