Leveling with an elemental shaman, best spec?

Hello all,
I play together with my wife and we've created new Taurens, a paladin for me and a shaman that she will spec elemental. We will level mostly through questing and I don't expect we will do a lot of dungeons with these characters.
What would be the best spec to level?
- Ret: higher dps, so mobs will die more quickly. Will I be able to keep mobs on me though, so that her shaman does not get hit and lose her dps?
- Prot: tanking should of course be no problem (and she can throw a heal or two if needed), but I'm afraid of two things: while leveling, do I have enough means to generate threat upfront (because her waiting for me for 5 seconds for each mob would not be optimal) and isn't the dps too gimped compared to ret?
I was wondering if the best would not be a mix of both: protection for extra survival and threat, but with a two-hander rather than sword and board to increase my damage?
Thanks for the help, I have not levelled a paladin since vanilla WoW and the class has changed a lot since then!

Prot, Prot and Prot.
Because you don't have to worry about your health and at later levels she can throw a chain lightning or two (I think about 26), you can round up 6-7 mobs right from level 10 and you can both kill them quickly. (From level 12 you will get your
threat booster
so don't worry about threat at all).

I think the best will be for you to try all specs.
In my opinion, best is to
take prot.
You will be able to do mass pulls and AoE the mobs, which is a lot of fun.
If you like killing mobs one by one more than a mass pull, then take retri.
I'd also get dual spec with off spec holy for few instances you have mentioned.
In the other hand, if mobs will go down quickly, taking prot over retri may work out better. It has a lot of utilities such as stuns, dazes etc. meaning your wife won't be hit much.
Conclusion: Take what suits you the best and your play style.

Shockadin goes decently with Ele Shaman if only because you can DPS mobs down at range. 1-2 shots each and they'll go down. Only problems will be in dealing with groups, that's when you may prefer to have a melee class.
My opinion - if you're the type who likes single target killing and avoids chain-pulling, go Shockadin (i.e. Holy). Otherwise, go Prot.
